Smoky's actually my favorite Steven fusion. Stevonnie's great, but the buildup over this arc with Amethyst's growth and their relationship as Earthlings, the Worst Crystal Gems, the Shorty Squad, all coalescing into someone who could not only beat but absolutely *style* on Jasper feels so damn good.

A few episodes ago I talked about how maybe rose/the rebellion killed blue diamond due to me not paying enough attention to the fine detail and only seeing 4 reduced to 3 and blue was confirmed on earth in the Ruby/Saphire origin episode. Now confirmed for me that pink diamond is the probable death. When peridot made contact with the kindergarten lab in her early appearances she was shocked that there were any gems left on the planet at all. It seems that the diamonds evacuated their people, which we saw in the centipedles drawings then attempted the equivalent of a WMD on the earth to destroy all gems. I say all gems as yellow when peridot spoke to her knew organic life was still there. I think the corruption might be the equivalent of radioactive fallout of the attack and not the intended effect. If the corruption was the intent then why would jasper and peridot seemingly not know about it until the got on earth physically. The diamonds may not even know.

I like the dichotomy between Bismuth's and Jasper's poofing scenes; they both think that Steven IS actually Rose and they're being tricked, but when Steven says something that makes it clear he isn't Rose, Bismuth realises at the last moment that she was wrong, while Jasper just gets confused and doubles down. Shows a clear difference in their character.

It's whenever Jasper is present that it is oeak for me. Like hands down this is one of the best points in the show, because we have come a long way and we can take on villains like Jasper and there is still so much left in the series. It just has the best feeling. Like the top of the roller coaster moment

Smoky Quartz is always a treat when they show up! Definitely one of my fav fusions! Peridot never ceases to bring me so much joy! Homegirl is out here living her best life as a meepmorpist, proud as hell to be a Crystal Gem, can't resist being a know-it-all Kindergartener, and is Trying Her Best with her metal powers...and she gets the final blow, albeit in a very tragic victory! I love that she's like Smoky's #1 fan!

34:09 Corruption in a nutshell is like psychological damage, trauma to the mind. By fusing with a corrupted gem and being unstable already, jasper opened herself up to becoming corrupted. When gems fuse their minds overlap and they can see into each other’s heads somewhat. Jasper hit her breaking point during this.

it kinda is though...like, i get the reasons people claim it's not, but it is. There are exceptions where it's more of an broader intimacy thing, but, fusion is largely an analog for sex, or something similar.

The confusion over Gem corruption is understandable. You've seen the ones corrupted by the Diamonds 5000 years ago and Jasper due to infection (trying to fuse with a corrupted Gem). There are at least 2 or 3 other ways Gems can get corrupted which I wont spoil (prolonged exposure is one, that may also be what happened to Jasper).

If you notice pink yellow and blue are closer to cyan magenta yellow which combine to white. Hence white diamond is a fusion of all 3 other gems. After pink was destroyed they couldn’t form white. Which is why you only hear of yellow and blue.

Steven universe is all hand animated, and they had various storyboard artists working on various episodes, so theres definitely a consistency problem with the character models, each storyboard artist ends up leaning into their own personal style, if you look up some storyboard artists comparisons youll see what i mean ^_^ Its a worthy criticism i wont deny that, but i kinda like it xD

It is interesting that they did these episodes right after the bismuth episodes. Because those episodes show two sides to rose, the rebellions extremist vs the loyalist, two gems who had reasons to disagree with rose, one on her side and one who stood against her.
