Even if you don’t do my little pony next I hope you’ll eventually do it because it’s honestly a really good show that many right off because it’s for very young children but I like it and I’m 26 lol

Taigan

“Steven got older.” Yes, because *that’s* the most significant event in these episodes. 🥺

Phoenix_mercury

If your looking for channels doing mlp I recc Casper Fox

Some Simp

What i like the most about Mr.universe episode is how much greg and pink mirror each other Pink grew up in a horrible home being told what to do,never given a choice on what she wants to do, and eventually ran away to start a new life and we see Greg grew up in a horrible home being told what to do,never given a choice on what he wants to do, and eventually ran away to start a new life These two really were meant for each other

Wilhelm Hedin

Steven himself is the main problem of course, but yeah couldn't they have made more of the other stuff? In my dreams.

Some Simp

i feel like masco sometimes forgets steven is a human gem hybrid, i mean in the og show finale it kinda showd hes more human than gems

Candace

Also I loved these episodes the last few are the best of the season in my opinion, you’re in for a ride!

KylarStern1995

I think I said in a comment in the first episode that Steven needs to have some time by himself to work out who he actually wants to be. Jasper's idea of constructive violence could have worked. As it works with human martial arts and contact sports but such an endeavour requires a teacher or competitor of equal or superior abilities. Steven only has three, the other diamonds. I grew up in a family of 4 brothers and 1 sister, all the brothers between 15-19 needed time alone when we got worked up and supremely upset. Just a silent walk along the canal in our case for an hour or two. Helps work things out or at least let you calm down and think.

Mark Ten

Jasper has embraced the corruption because it gave her strength and she made it part of her final form.

sidney

thank you, not many people are reacting to it, which is a shame.

Mathias Køhler

i love how well future shows how ptsd progresses it does so well at that in so few episodes

Candace

Already watching Casper Fox but she’s my fave reactor!

BigPoppaJohn89

i think Steven had a overflow of adrenaline and just lost himself by not holding back in that moment because i don't think he ever experience an adrenaline rush before because he was scared all the time as a kid, always worrying about others and trying not to hurt others. i think thats what happened

Symbolic Remnant

Here we are in FEAAAR and it’s AAAAAAAAAAAAA

JamJarWorks

I can't I CAN'T I CAN'T I C A N 'T

cosmotron

lmao that was my thought too.

Marcy Wu

A lot of the formerly corrupted gems do still have some elements from their corrupted state.

Luis Hernandez

I feel like Steven's downward spiral has been there since the beginning, or at least the seeds were planted for it very subtly

CaptainChar

I used to be 164lbs for the longest time then after highschool I got older heavier and not as easy to get up and down anymore

NatMcK7

[Mod] Mosco may not be reading Patreon comments but it's best to not spoil anyway just in case she accidentally sees them, thanks.

Mr. Universe is maybe my favorite episode in all SU because the character writing is just phenomenal. When I first watched it, I felt so vindicated because Season 1 of original Steven always felt vaguely sad to me, like Steven is borderline neglected, even though he's loved so much. How many episodes do we get where he's wandering around on his own, wishing his family was around? The Gems don't know any better, because they're aliens, but Greg really just lets Steven be a latchkey kid even though he is human himself, and I never really understood why because we never had the context. In this episode, we get the context. Greg escaped emotionally abusive parents. He grew up feeling choked, smothered, and caged, so when he has a kid of course his reaction is to raise Steven in the complete opposite way. But from Steven's perspective, he's only just now gaining the maturity to look back on his guardians' parenting decisions with a critical eye. Now, he can see why it might be irresponsible to raise a kid the way he was raised, with little supervision or structure or stability. His tendency to blame Greg in this situation is exacerbated by the fact that Steven, at this point in the story, is suffering a downward spiral of CPTSD, which he doesn't yet have a name or successful coping mechanism for. He's neck-deep in pain that he doesn't understand. He doesn't know where it's coming from or how to solve it (moreover, his whole life experience so far has been that others don't solve HIS problems; he solves theirs---so why would he think that anyone can help him if he can't help himself?). Of course he's looking for someone to blame. From Greg's perspective, going to his parents' house to find his music is a way of connecting with his son, of reaching back through the years to remember the experiences most formative of his whole identity---the discovery of Mr. Universe and everything that followed. But imagine being Steven. You're hurting, you're terrified, you're lonely. Your life for the past 3 years has been trauma after trauma as you strive against all odds to heal relationships that were broken by those who came before you. All of this is associated with the Gem Empire, with a life of adventure and aliens and near-death experiences that feels so far from normal human life. While you're grappling with all of this, your dad takes you to a place you never knew existed: your grandparents' house. It's like a prototype of everything you've been missing. Comfort, routine, rigid and fulfillable expectations, connection to your human half and a human family. (Remember how excited Steven was to meet his racist uncle, even though he kind of sucked? He's never had the chance to have a close family relationship with ANY humans---except maybe Connie.) Your dad, instead of noticing how important this all is to you, responds to all of it with resentment and dismissal. You leave the house without any kind of mutual acknowledgement that it matters. In the car, Greg tries to connect the way he thinks would work, but he and Steven are on totally different pages now. Greg's attempt to inspire Steven is counterproductive, because what Steven needs at this point is not freedom---it's boundaries. I.e., Steven really really needs someone to tell him what's going on and what he should do, so he can stop spiraling. Instead, Greg just pushes harder on the message of how great it is to be free to make your own mind up about who you are. Steven has had that freedom his whole life, and now he's miserable, so of course he'd respond negatively to being told that this is where the solution to his problems lies. Steven misses the human family he never had. Greg tells him his grandparents aren't worth knowing. Steven misses the stable home life he never had. Greg tells him that he was lucky to grow up so free. Steven misses not having to be the adult in every situation. Greg tells him that adults giving kids rules sucks. In every instance, they just fail to understand each other. And they're both trying, and they both love each other, and in the past they've understood each other really well! ---which makes it all the more impressive that, in this case, they don't---and it's so. completely. believable. Ultimately, Steven does a thing that a lot of people in a PTSD spiral (to my understanding) experience---his internal turmoil builds to such a point that it bursts out in a dangerous way, and he overturns the car. Instead of acknowledging how not-okay that was, what does Greg do? He congratulates him on it. For Steven, who has been desperately needing boundaries, needing consequences, needing help, this is the final clincher that his dad will never understand his state of mind right now. Deleting the photo is SUCH a good note to end the episode on because it represents that he's cutting himself off from that whole half of himself---the human half, the Greg half. His dad can't reach him anymore, and Steven falls further into believing that nobody can. UGH I love the writing so much.

T. rex

I could honestly keep writing but this is already hellishly long, sorry about that folks

Just getting through Moscos intro. Hearing about what happened to the jasper pink situation I really need that resolved. Oh you poor thing I can’t wait for this!

Diego Munguia

They couldn’t have done the Steven break down that fast. This needed to be a build up and it was sprinkled in the other episodes while they tied loose ends.

Eliteguard99

"You could not live with your failure, and where did that bring you? Back to me" - Jasper

Angelus Lupus

Sorry, I wasn't thinking this was a spoiler - up to this point we've seen Steven struggling a lot with internal stuff already... or repressing it. I won't be offended if you want to remove the comment, just in case.

Fritz Random

I still remember when the audio clip of the beginning of Fragments was leaked and everyone was theorizing and making their own interpretations of the audio

A Dead Diehard

I think I'll deal with revisiting this trauma by listening to Greg's voice actor sing Breakaway again...

Wolfie

As much as I understand why Steven was so upset with Greg, Greg had legitimate reasons for not introducing Steven to his parents. They never even opened his letters, and they never looked for Greg clearly- his addresses were on the letters. Greg was probably terrified that they would try to do the same thing to Steven as they did to him- probably even try to take him away from Greg. Greg was miserable growing up, and had no intention of forcing that life on Steven.

When you go back through SU Future, with exception to the Very Special Episode, when you really look at it you'll see that Steven's break down has been an ongoing existential crisis right off rip. It just wasn't super pronounced until the Concert when Lars left and Sadie's band broke up. But that's what makes it feel so real - you often miss the signs, at first, when someone is struggling. They themselves might not even see them. Until it's all built up and it's too late, and then you don't know what to do. You don't know how it got so bad so quick, but it wasn't quick. You just didn't know what to look for. You didn't know how to check in.

Christopher Bartsch

The Homeschool stuff is critically important because it shows the routine that "Future-era Steven" had settled into. What he was using his skills for. Only it wasn't working like before. In "Guidance" He was trying to fix the "role" that the Uncorrupted Gems were doing, despite the fact that they CHOSE to do what they were good at. In "Volleyball" he was trying to bury the trauma and complicated relationship with his own mother. In "Very Special Episode" He spreads himself too thin by trying to manage Little Homeschool. In "Snow Day" We show how so much shame he holds for his past innocence, partially from his desire for maturity and respect. Then it all snowballs in the back half. He panics from the loss of his loved ones and stable peers in "Little Graduation" and tries to physically stop them from leaving. He hides his insecurities and feelings from the Crystal Gems in "Prickly Pair" He flocks to his last remaining stable friend in Connie in "Bismuth Casual" but his poor mental state leads him to try and IMMEDIATELY propose so she won't leave in "Together Forever". Then he flocks to Greg, only to grow resentment at his boring mundane childhood and lashes out at Greg. Then he tries and buries in with physical training in "Fragments" before going too far and hurting Jasper. There is no external big threat because Steven's deteriorating mental health IS the threat. It's an internal threat. We see, in a slow-burn, up-close, detail just HOW badly trauma and the loss of stable connections and unhealthy coping responses can affect someone. It's something especially rare to show in Kids TV and something especially rare to see handled as well as Future does it.

Christopher Bartsch

It's unabashed release. He was hiding EVERYTHING. His insecurities, his pains, his trauma, his sadness, his resentment, still trying to present as the Galaxy-saving wonder kid he grew up as. With Jasper, he didn't need to hide anything, feel bad about anything, he just just tap into the raw emotions and powers and just let loose. Unfortunately, when you're letting loose an entire childhood's worth of trauma and pain, it can lead to unintentionally hurting others. He lost control.

deny

btw every corrupted gem has little corruption left of them its not just jasper

deny

frrr.. rewaatching i see all the signs

deny

isnt it good for her to see this cuz expecting something that wont come kinda ruins the experience

Annieme

I feel the same about stick vs automatic driving xD

Senzu Bean

My profile picture is perfect for this episode lol. Jasper is my fav Steven Universe character and Vegeta is my fav Dragon Ball character😍

peachy af

im so glad she's getting the nuance in mr universe bc some people just said "steven's being an asshole" and kind of left it at that

peachy af

i guess it's just because i have hindsight but her comment on how she wishes "these last 2-3 episodes are what i wish the whole show was about; his breakdown etc etc" is really lost on me because that's quite literally this whole show. they can't jump into angsty steven right off the bat but he's very clearly "uneasy" and there's definitely some buildup in every episode to things like this

Joy (a.k.a. Gentle Lionheart)

This was such a perfect breakdown of the episode. Every time I would stop reading to add another point in my head, I would go back and see that you already did! Also, I fully agree that the writing is soooo good! I love the discussions born from these episodes

T. rex

Totally. And honestly, even though A Very Special Episode is played for laughs, it reinforces the overall point that Steven will always prioritize helping others over helping himself, which is important context for his breakdown

Squat

If you look closer, Jasper's "cracks" visibly manifest in her new form. Her horn is sawed off, and her face stripe is broken.

Nihilero

Also he stopped being a vegetarian

Val Mattingly

The reason I love Future is because the whole show is about growing up, moving on, and healing while learning to accept change and accept yourself. And at first, you think you're going to get more Steven Universe, and the show takes you through the ringer of ruining your expectations and taking you through a lot of heavy shit. Looking back on the previous episodes once you know what the show is going to be, you see it for what it was all along.

Matrim

While I get wanting that external threat like in the first series, the whole point of Future is Stephen trying to cope with *not* having an external threat. It’s dealing with the issues that come up in the quiet moments, where you are so used to always having a problem to solve or a task to accomplish that you don’t know how to handle life without them. It’s one of the reasons I love this series so much.

Christopher Bartsch

Steven was looking into Greg's life as an outsider. He saw the mundane, chill, quiet life of a nuclear family in the suburbs with nothing but envy. Steven never got the luxury of being normal. He was always a one-of-a-kind kid and he was dealt one-of-a-kind issues. And in Future, he was really reeling from the internal trauma of it all, finally bubbling to the surface with a more-developed mind. Steven never saw the home that was an utter hell for Greg. A stifling oppressive childhood where Greg couldn't feel free to be himself; form his own identity. All Steven saw was an escape. An escape from everything that felt so painful and uncertain. Something predictable, simple, and easy. He failed to see that, even aside from the DeMayo household, he would never truly fit in a "normal" human household, due to his unique nature as a gem-human hybrid. That life wouldn't give him solace, just new problems and new mental issues during adolescence. His idealized look at suburbia was mere fantasy from the get go.

Christopher Bartsch

It's why Future has felt so much better on a Rewatch. Because on first viewing, I was like "Okay, these episodes are fun, but outside of the few exceptions (Snow Day, the Peridot Episode, Together Forever), none really were like "WOW, all-time Steven Universe content" to me. But now, looking at it as an entire whole, with Steven's own mental health among the most essential themes of it, it stands so much higher in my eyes. Trying to look at the consequences of what a childhood as a Galaxy-Saving Chosen One would REALLY do to a person. How a world-saving hero can exist when there's no world to save, but the trauma still persists anyways.

Christopher Bartsch

I also saw so many people on first watching go "I can't believe Greg was such a shitty dad, letting Steven suffer without school or doctors". As if a 20-something loner would have the textbook on how to raise a half-human, half-alien child on his own, one who would soon have to face a galaxy-wide list of problems. All Greg knew was to not make the same mistakes as his own parents, and that meant loving Steven unconditionally, accepting whoever he ended up being, and trying to support him the best he could. Considering that his first major failings were "Never take my kid to a human doctor until his best friend did" & "Was slightly unprepared to deal with my kid's C-PTSD" I'd say Greg still did pretty damn good, considering the circumstances. Even if his Laissez-faire parenting style DID cause adverse strife to Steven's already declining mental health

Zefram Mann

Also has Steven ever even had a cold? Connie's mom implies that his injuries seem to heal instantly, so Greg may never have had a reason to be worried about Steven's health.

Lauren Madden

I remember the reaction my sisters and I had while watching fragments. Genuinely shocked, can’t make up or re create first time reactions. That’s why they’re so special and rememberable. This is the episode is future I was most excited for you to see/react to!

T. rex

I think that that only happened after Steven's healing powers manifested. In the full-length OG theme, young Steven gets shown with a band-aid on his face (at the age when Greg sent him to live with the Gems) and in the early episodes he also suffers an attack of hay fever, if that counts. But like, even then, it's pretty standard to take kids for pediatric checkups even if they seem to be doing fine, because it's important to keep tabs on whether they're developing properly. The fact that Greg never did this is a little concerning (although maybe you could justify it by saying that his gem physiology needed to be kept secret?)

CosmicTransmtation

@Christopher even a stupid 20 year old knows to take kids to the doctor. my parents had me when they were 17 and they weren't as effing stupid as Greg was.

Haven

It's not in my habit to comment, but I think sharing a bit of experience as a trans, neurodivergent, person could be relevant for "Mr Universe". Growing up and being treated as different often doesn't help, even if you are different in some ways, you just want to belong and I think, in "Mr Universe" Steven felt rightfully excluded. As stated, being a teenager and all, you can tend to react intensely, but that doesn't mean he was wrong. At least, not on everything. Greg is right, Steven didn't know how Greg's parents were and I'm not sure he would have liked growing up with them. But again, Steven could have gone to school, seen a doctor and so on... He is half-gem, that's a fact, but every human is different and those differences aren't always treated kindly, those difference are not always taken in account by doctors. Steven is still a person who wants to be treated like a normal person. Some people wouldn't have respect that, but that's ok, it's usually better than feeling cast out.

marnacles

Steven shattering Jasper is so insane. What a way to show how bad of a state he’s in. Steven “peace and love on the planet earth” power-of -friendship Universe fucking KILLED somebody
