OKAY OKAY OKAY my excitement is through the roof for you to witness Lesson Zero!! This is A BIG AND BONKERS EPISODE!! 3 things >> Twilight has her crazy crash out and it’s such a wild ride! The animators did such a splendid job at making her look so hilariously unhinged as well as Tara Strong voice performance being brilliant! The aura of the unicorns magic in the show will now look different. It’s way more vivid and overall a prettier aesthetic choice! A little detail each unicorn’s magic now matches their eye colour. And finally all the girls will be able to write a letter to Celestia now, no longer just a focus on Twilight reporting back. “I would like you all to report to me your findings on the magic of friendship when—and only when—you happen to discover them”. I think Mosco for sure will really like a certain letter written by AJ!! Also also bonus, Rarity’s “the worst possible thing” and Fluttershy tackling a bear always cracks me up!

RaisedEyebrow

This is one of my favorite episodes just with how many expectations they subvert. And imo, this episode is REALLY important, because it lets the writers make episodes that don't need Twilight shoehorned in for the Letter To Celestia aesop epilogue!

morthasa

As I commented in a past episode, when Twi breaks down, she BREAKS DOWN!

Charlie Odinoco

I like how the show shifts focus by having Twilight going NUTS

Justin Riley

A hilariously madcap episode. And one that introduces one of Twilight's most reoccurring traits, her tendency to catastrophize.

Midnightroze

One of my all time favorite episodes, especially since it marks the beginning of how unhinged this series gets s2 and onwards lol

Jared Bichler

10:57 In this fandom, we call it, "Twilighting."

Luís Pacheco

One thing that's interesting about this episode is that it solved a problem for the writers. In season 1, a problem the writers had was that they needed to include Twilight in every single episode, since she had to sent the letter at the end. You may notice she even appears in episodes that didn't focus on her at all, just because she had to be there to send the letter. After "Lesson Zero", they were finally freed from that obligation, and could get more creative with the combination of characters for each episode going forward.

Adrian ruiz martinez

She doesnt hate their guts... SHE WANTS TO GET IN THEM GUTS!!!

Jared Bichler

My friend: "Twilight needs help." Me: "I know, but therapy is expensive. Although if Twilight went, I bet Celestia would..." My friend: "I meant from her friends." Me: "Oh, that too."

Awsomedude1308

Twilight: The want it need it spell, works every time. The fuck you mean "every time"?

Jared Bichler

17:50 That's Harry the bear, and he's a total sweetheart. He also gives the best hugs.

Jared Bichler

18:43 No, no, she's still keeping it together. When she loses it, you'll know. 23:11 See?

Jacob Redmon

I'm so excited for next week.

Phoenix_mercury

Maybe that's just the books description? "Want it need it spell: causes X,y,z and works every time"

SoaringJe

Spike would make the best footnotes. I figured Celestia scolded her for the spell before her friends busted into the library, so we just didn't hear it, but Twilight did. Also, this ep is the one I recommend people watching before watching the pony parody "Princess" of the My Chemical Romance song. Twilight's canon crash out adds a lot to the experience, i think

Daniel Davies

This really is a significant episode, because now with all the Mane Six writing to Celestia, it means the writers don’t need to feel like they have to force Twilight into every episode just to deliver the message.

Jasmine

YESYEZYEZYESYESYESEYES

SA_Ross

Spike Squad logging in

SoaringJe

Yeah, the animators by this point—and with a bigger budget!—have decided each unicorn's magic has a color that matches the individual's—let's call it aura because we're RWBY fans here—but I don't think every unicorn's aura matches their eye color; while a prevalent trend, it seems more to match their cutie mark? Like, isn't Twilight's aura pink when her eyes are purple? Celestia's is gold when her eyes are magenta—but her cutie mark is yellow and gold.

Jared Bichler

My friend: "Twilight needs something to make her feel better." Me: "How about a straitjacket?"

Taigan

This was the first episode that really surprised/impressed me. I’d had been so sure the lesson of this episode was going to be Twilight learning to not sweat the small stuff. It actually being all her friends not taking her issues seriously was a nice twist.

Taigan

Also, I **SO** want to make a joke about one comment you made, but it’s spoilery so I won’t. 😓

iCommentToPlay

That is partly true!! And fair point! But there are also other ponies cutiemark's that don't match their aura/magic colour. Luna and SB don't match. Rarity's eyes and cutie marks are both blue. Maybe it depends on the colour scheme of the pony whether the aura is inspired from their cutiemarks or eyes.

A.B.

Rarity: "What a drama queen" Looks like Rarity should represent the element of harmony known as hypocrisy /J

Jaina Shadows

Fun fact: This and Party of One were the first two episodes I ever saw, so my first impression of this show, to quote the immortal words of Twilight Sparkle, was "All these ponies are CRAZY!"

Diesel Marcus

"HEYYY GIRRRRLLLSS!!" Twilight's going 'bye-bye' everyone! XD

Iago24

Who needs Discord when you've got Twilight Sparkle off her meds? Feels like Princess Celestia was briefly convinced that her faithful student had gone mad with power and might need some time off as a statue... 😅 This is probably one of the most iconic episodes of the show. There's no way they could have considered comedy this unhinged for the first season, and Twilight's crazy expressiveness was only possible thanks to the increased budget for this season. It's crazy to think that the plot of this episode only came to being because the writers felt restricted by the compulsory friendship lesson at the end of each episode and decided to trash the status quo in the most ridiculous way possible. Also, by the way, they had Twilight's checklist have pictures instead of words since the show had become a big hit internationally and they wanted to avoid localisation issues by ensuring that no English text will appear anywhere in the show starting from this season.

Tayga Fireclaw

Yess! this is one of the craziest episode in the show...... I absolutely love Tara's proformance , she is really showing her inner Harley Quinn here ...hihihi 💜💓

Mindstorm88

or, as somepony close to her says, "Twilynanas"

StarWishBuggy

Twilight reminds me of myself when I was younger very meticulous about everything trying to plan every single thing that could possibly happen

Helen Dingo

Fun Fact: This episode was written by the same person who wrote "Party of One", Meagan McCarthy. She LOVES making the ponies go a little crazy when she writes for them. Lol

Mae_Lody

Yeah, magic auras either match the cutie mark or the eye of the unicorn

Stache King

I completely forgot how unhinged the ponies look in this season in particular. Also, Tara Strong is the GOAT just with the performance in this episode, nevermind future episodes.

Flufux

I believe one reason why this episode was a thing was so they didn't have to force Twilight into every single episode so she could learn a lesson about friendship. Now all of them can write letters and learn lessons, so there will be episodes where Twilight isn't in them from now on.

Isa

3:58 that train in the other episode was being pulled by ponies bcuz it was supposed to be a joke that it’s an older, wild west, less advanced train. all the other ones in major cities are fancier and drive just normal.

The Nerdy Tiger

I love that when they are sat in a circle at the end they are all sitting in different ways

Dusti

i have extreme ocd and i see a lot of myself in twilight. i know this episode could be seen as funny or scary for a lotta people but for me the moral and the whole way it was executed is pretty accurate. Even though is was a ridiculous thing to think, and Twilight SHOULD know that celestia is chill enough to not banish her or send her back a grade, her brain convinced her that background knowledge "didn't apply" here and she catastrophized it to a point of overflowing. And the way her friends just laughed and rolled their eyes is accurate too, it's INFURIATING when I'm really intensely hyperfixated on something menial and I try doing what they always tell you to do, VENT about it to trusted people, but they don't get it and pin you as being silly or "you need some sleep". The moral is very important to me here

Dusti

im super happy they made it an actual point in her character instead of using it once and throwing it away. i love the consistency in this show

emma resolme

There was a theory like 10 years ago that each of the main 6 represents different mental disorders. Twilight represents OCPD (Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder), Rainbow represents narcissism, Flutter shy represents Social Anxiety/Anxiety in general, Rarity represents HPD (which is just being overly dramatic/exaggerating in order to draw attention to herself), Pinkie Pie represents ADHD, and AppleJack I think was deemed the most normal and sane pony out of the six of them

Seraphem

Welcome, officially, to Season 2! The 'official' part is because technically the premier was produced as part of Season 1, so this is where production got kicked up a notch as the budget and tech got increased. Which, as you already noted, means the animators get to have SO much fun with expressions. And we get the big shift into no longer needing to shoehorn in Twilight to learn a lesson every episode. Both to allow them more freedom with story telling, and becuase the show stopped noting itself as being 'Informative/Educational' which it had in season 1, and thus had much stricter guidline on what it could do, and was required to have a directly stated moral every episode. Also, Twilight finding out the yes, everypony in this town is in fact crazy, including her.

Seraphem

I'd go with "She wants to rearrange her guts!"

SweetCandle

Yet another case of Cutie Mark Failure Insanity Syndrome.

Christopher Pope

Spike fares so well in Twilight episodes. (Not so much in his own, though to be fair it's partly due to the show's format of the focus character usually being the one needing to learn a lesson.) I love Lesson Zero for this, the lesson, the freak-outs, and Celestia's carefully-worded handling of the friends' intervention. But also for the fact that Twilight shares the tendency I had to catastrophize when I was younger.

JHB

There is a term for this particular behavior, but that would be spoilers.

therewashuman

Don’t worry about discord he just shy

Faroth

6:00 yes, twi is totally neurodivergent 13:10 we love our drama queen rarity 21:41 lets appreciate how much twilight magic has improved, at start of s1 she had to super concentrate to teleport, now she uses it a lot and with really high precision 33:00 spike, the one with common sense, he actually went to the source to try and calm Twilight with facts because he knows her and knows it is important to her even if isnt important for others in their pov

RedeemerofDark

Yeah, teaching a lesson about not diminishing other people's suffering to nothingness as its disrespectful and causes people to feel unheard and like they can only handle the issue themselves it definitely an important one to get across, and I'm glad any show especially this one was willing to showcase that!

Athena

I personally love the headcanon that Twilight is Autistic/has OCD. I think you can see either one, or both at the same time in her. A lot of the cast seems to represent certain spectrum disorders, which is refreshing to see on so many different personalities. None of these are confirmed, but I believe the main headcanons are Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash having a form of ADHD, Fluttershy having Social anxiety/generalized anxiety, and I feel like Rarity has...something...but I have *no* idea what lol. (you can also see Pinkie as autism spec too, especially in certain episodes)

Faroth

The same ones for me and i immediately said: this show aint for kids

Sarah H

All I can hear when Twilight freaks out like this is Timmy Turner, and I love it, even if I'm not fond of Twilight as a character.

ShadeWolf

3:55 Fun fact i believe each season has a slightly different intro like background design/characters.

Kassy

It's been so long since I watched this episode. I always skip it whenever I'm rewatching this show. It's my least favorite episode of the whole show. I watched it this time because I really wanted to see your reaction to it and I was not disappointed. I think I like this episode a little more than I did before.

Sparrow

I relate to AJ as someone diagnosed with autism, but I’ve heard Pinkie also has BPD.

Phoenix_mercury

Of the whole show? Even over certain other... Insensitive ones?

Phoenix_mercury

Yeah and not just not diminishing it but specifically not diminishing something just because "you" don't think it's a big deal

iKirbeeburgr

Rarity says her iconic catchphrase

RavenFairy

The reason why the train was pulled along by horses was because of the historic moment in the beginning of trains. There were was even horse drawn carriages with rail track wheels. You did said that you watched Spirit the horse movie.

Ehren Bendler

Highlights: M: "You don't need to learn a lesson every week! It's ok!" Me: "Lesson Zero!" M: "I'm more of an Appledash" Me: "We know!" M: "Is that even a word?" Me: Oh, sweet summer child, how little you know.

Ehren Bendler

"We're going full gollum, huh?" The writers on this show are GIANT FUCKING NERDS and I love it.

RedeemerofDark

Also it's kinda hilarious that with this episode you've now seem what happens when half of the Mane Six go crazy now xD I know you were having a lot of fun speculating and theorizing in the last one. I do wonder if your going to shift your gaze to the characters themselves now that you've seen their respective breaking points and neuroses. It's like my past buzzed self said "the lore of this series is really really really deep and feel like it just keeps going if your willing to look hard enough". Especially QuantumHippologist's channel has done a good job showing that but your gonna wanna wait before looking at his channel as it's full of spoilers for most of the series xD

armadillo_arts

as far as that conflict with the cutie mark crusaders from last episode, it’s never addressed again lmao. that kind of leaves people to assume it was just being in discord’s presence that caused a rift between them

Sparrow

I think the reason The Cutie Mark Crusaders were fighting in the last couple episodes was because of Discord. You know how in Percy Jackson, the presence of certain gods triggers certain behaviors (i.e. Ares makes people fight)? I think it’s similar to that.

Iago24

It was more of a case of the showrunners being indecisive about the technology levels in the show, mixed with earlier concepts of anything and everything in the setting being horse-powered and -themed. It really didn't make sense for the train to have both an engine and a team of horses pulling it, hence why they dropped the idea completely for the future seasons.

Kintatsu

Twilight MAY be suffering some Discord-related PTSD, here. Y’know, MAYBE. Unrelated, you’re gonna want Hamish in your arms and Elijah on-hand for the next RWBY chapter.

Haldon Lindstrom

I always read Twilight's anxiety as being low self-esteem, combined with performance anxiety. She doesn't think she's worthy of the attention and accolades she gets, except the ones she can measure 'objectively' like completing assignments, so she pours a lot of her self-worth into being perfect and living up to the expectations of others. The best thing MLP did was to use the characters to embody real life fears and mistakes, while exaggerating them for comedy. That was part of why they became so popular with not just their target demographic, but the Brony community.

sidney

seriously season 2 is so much better because now its not just twilight writing the letters, it will be all of the mane 6 and we can have episodes that are just based on certain characters instead of just twilight.

Tristan N Milner

35 min reaction? Should be enough time to build a HG kit. 21:56 that's the face of every content creator seeing an email from YouTube about a video getting a bullshit copyright strike.

Tintros

SO it's only a matter of time before we see fanart of Spike with Mosco-hair? :)

Rixec2

It's always chaotic fun to see Twilight crack - or Twilighting, as we call it. Just wait until you see her start Twilighting at midnight. ^_^

Dragon Palm

I think Celestia was going to explain that she was there because Twilight was messing up so bad, but then everyone else came in and turned it into a friendship lesson. Celestia then elected to allow them to think that's what it was about because encouraging a moment of self-growth was more important than scolding Twilight. Hence the "condition" to not punish Twilight being that letters are only sent when they learned something. She was going to command that anyways but she gave ownership of the moment to all of them.

Bilge Radić

I haven’t seen this episode in a very long time and before now I never understood why people loved it so much but seeing it again it’s soo good on every level from the acting writing animation and jokes it’s 10/10 perfect

Jasmine

6:34 right?? 10:30 oh uh catastroph...catastropho...um. that. 11:34 a GOOOOD FRIIIEND :) 12:40 The. Worst. Possible. THING. 12:46 and Twilights just..glee 15:05 to...to be...COUGH UM 16:20 NICKNAME. *RD* 23:03 Hi gIIRLs :) This and Party of One are my most highly anticipated episodes in this chunk of the series. so much so that I didn't even remember Discord was coming until like the episode before, nor the GGGala

Jasmine

27:34 besides Applebuck Season -- I think that's probably the biggest moment of his thus far 33:35 yeahh no need to cross that out lol Especially because it looks like he scrapped the whole thing

Marcy Wu

I went into a little more detail on this in the YouTube comments section but I am one of those people that believes Twilight has severe OCD. Her and Rarity, even if it is far less prominent with Rarity. But I do still believe she has OCD as well. Hers is just less severe.
