Welcome to Media Club Plus: a podcast about diving into the media that interests us and the stories that excite us.

Bad vibes all around! Does Gon Freecss become the least shounen protagonist of all time? Or the most? And how long can Pouf and Youpi hope to keep Meruem away from Komugi, or even from merely her name? Or the word Gungi? And what's with all this blood? Hey was something up with that bomb?

Thanks to Austin for joining us on a doozy of an episode he asked to be on almost as far back as the show's conception.

This week we cover episodes 131-133, titled Anger x and x Light, FLash x and x Start, and Deadline x to x Live. Next episode we'll be covering episodes 134-136, titled The Word x Is x You, This Person x And x This Moment, and Homecoming x And x True Name.

Featuring Keith Carberry (@KeithJCarberry, @KeithJCarberry), Jack de Quidt (@jdq) Sylvi Bullet (@SYLVIBULLET), Andrew Lee Swan (@swandre3000), and Austin Walker (@AustinWalker)

I’ve been waiting for this episode since the moment I learned the conceit of the show.

Ainsley

This and the next three for me definitely.

I had resisted watching ahead until I watched 131 and have now finished the entire show. I have been thinking about this episode of MC+ ever since, I can't even imagine what it was like for everyone but Jack for the duration of production!!

i've always read gon's transformation as his vision of what he'd be like in however many years, constrained by his present outlook and knowledge of nen. he gets a lot bigger and a lot stronger but he *only* gets bigger and stronger, and even then he only gets stronger in the way he currently conceptualizes his strength. it's like if you took gon out of the story and had him robotically repeat his training regimen with bisky in a contextless void for decades and decades, but he never had any breakthroughs or gained any deeper understanding of himself. he still lacks experience, he hasn't self-actualized, he doesn't actually have any of the benefit of years of life and dedicated martial arts training other than raw power level. in all the ways that matter outside of exactly one kind of violence he hasn't grown up at all, because he's burned his life to fuel the pyre of his revenge and now he *can't* grow up. he's the same kid with the same face, same clothes, same jajanken, and the same unprocessed trauma. so i think, on a thematic level, it'd make sense if he were actually significantly weaker in this form than if he got there the long way around. also somehow Big Gon is more upsetting to me than the physical nuclear bomb, thank you togashi.

Hearing about all the contemporary reactions to this stuff that Austin read, it's just so disheartening. And it's all just noise, no signal, a complete dearth of useful criticism, and it can be frustrating to feel like that's how so many people engage with media. Glad we've got people and pods like this.

Notably, in the really terrible Jump Force crossover fighting game, when Gon uses That Move he is knocked out of the game immediately after Nen Impact is a team fighter, so I think they could also do that there

*professor voice* The narrator disappearing during Gon's transformation calls to mind, of course, the moment in Muppet Christmas Carol when, faced with the apparition of The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, Gonzo/Dickens absents himself until the conclusion. A narrator's power is to comment on what is happening right now. In these instances, when faced with the horror of an unknown future suddenly made known, the narrator is powerless and must retreat.

The kanji that they use in Eva for Shinji's last name Ikari is an obscure one meaning anchor, but that by no means takes away from the point that the title of this episode "Ikari to Hikari" or "Anger and light" could be an allusion. I think it's neat that the homonym double meaning "ikari/ikari" very nearly works in English as well, "anger/anchor"

I think transformed Gon is WEAKER than he'd be in 20 years. From the first moment he asked Wing to blast his nen pores we've been told that Gon is weakening his future power by using shortcuts and this is the apex of that. We've always been told that what is special about him is his potential but he was always pushed into selling his future for less power now

Eventually I'd love to see a MC+ mini season on the manga, but after finishing this season y'all need to just dive in and enjoy it. It's truly a feast for people who want to see freaks slowly maneuver through minefields as the tides of fate pull them into incredible danger.

Friends at the Table

i think that's interesting, but also the benefit and cost of a nen contract has to match. by the rules of nen, if gon asks for all the power he'll ever have that's what he'll get. but i do think there's wiggle room there to go either way with it

Chance

Every episode I am left most of all sick with anticipation of the next episode. To me that's a sign of an excellent program I would love to hear about it of course, but the succession arc contains so many things that Jack doesn't know that they know, and so much that they know that they don't, in addition to just being so excellent

Teemu

Something that wasn't mentioned in this episode, is that in episode 131 when we're looking at Gon powering up from Pitou's perspective and they're activating Terpsichora, the song that's playing is Restriction And Pledge, which is what played during Netero's Rose.

running into this post with only half the episode done to say that the post austin mentions listing the current number of plots in the manga is my post, and that it only exists because this podcast convinced me to get into hxh, so thank you all. also, that post was written before the recent batch of new chapters, and said chapters instantly introduced a major new plot out of nowhere, so when i update that post for the next batch we’ll be at plot 23, somehow

Andrew Hsieh

Do you have a link to your post? I’d love to read it!

I've been doing so good. SO good at keeping pace with the podcast (on my second viewing...) until this point, but this shit is so good I marathoned like from the end of these episodes to halfway through the remaining show. THIS is television.

I started listening to this podcast last month and am only in Greed Island now, but I couldn't resist jumping ahead to listen to this episode set. While I've heard the Kite as a stand-in for Ging reading before, it was the first time I heard someone suggest Gon would see Kite as Ging's Killua or impose a type of relationship between them and react according to that imagined connection. My heart was also broken by the idea that Gon was intentionally distancing himself from Killua in order to stay on his path. Loved rolling these new insights around in my brain. Looking forward to listening to the next set of episodes later today (and then I'll go back to Greed Island and pretend things are fine again).
