Welcome to Media Club Plus: a podcast about diving into the media that interests us and the stories that excite us.

We start off this new season immediately in the soup of a horrible election, thanks to the intentionally poor planning of Isaac Netero. After spending some time with the new dysfunctinoal family of Ging, Pariston and the other zodiaks, we meet up with the old dysfunctional family of assassins, the Zoldycks of Kukuroo Mountain where we learn that Killua has a secret cursed sister.

This week we cover episodes 137-139, titled Debate x Among x Zodiaks, Request x and x Wish, and Alluka x and x Something. Next episode we'll be covering episodes 140-142, titled Join Battle x and x Open Battle, Magician x and x Butler, and Needles x and x Debt.

Yayyyyyyyy Alluka time!!

A note on the Japanese question Jack raised at the end of the episode: I wasn't able to find much discussion around the Zoldyck children names as verbs interpretation when searching in Japanese. However, I found several Japanese Twitter and forum users who pointed out that the names of the Zoldyck children do align with the rules of shiritori, which is the word game that Alluka and Killua play in episode 139. In the rules of the game, the last character of the first word is then used as the first character of the next word. For the Zoldyck children, this would be イルミ-> ミルキ -> キルア -> アルカ -> カルト (Illumi -> Milluki -> Killua -> Alluka -> Kalluto). Consensus was divided on why all of the names had ル (ru), in them, though I saw one person say it might be Silva (シルバ) using the ル in his own name for his children's names, which I quite liked as an interpretation.

Teemu

I'd never considered the Zoldyck sibling's names as puns, I only knew of the shiritori angle (which is the game that Alluka wanted to play with Killua)

Muna

Wow I never thought about the name meanings before but what Jack listed sounds accurate! Another fun note about the names is how the end of each name in descending age order starts the next name aka: Illumi -> milluki -> killua -> alluka -> kalluto Illumillukilluallukalluto

Ainsley

If I remember correctly because of this and the extra unnamed child in the family photo people were speculating that Alluka was the name for them.

TrueLily

The first two syllables of each Zoldyck kids name are the final two syllables of the previous kids name reversed. I Lu Mi gives you Mi Lu Ki gives you Ki Lu A gives you A Lu Ka gives you Ka Lu To

love in the title sequence seeing killua’s disappointed/dejected face when he looks at gon morphing into such a sweet affectionate look when he sees alluka!! it gets me every time!! this is my favorite arc!!

TrueLily

Goddddd same, his sweet little smile melts my heart every fucking time, it's so cute.

TrueLily

I'm sure everyone on the cast noticed, but since it wasn't mentioned, the ED for this arc is another verse of Hyori Ittai, which is interesting because it's the only time they haven't used a totally new ED.

kermit crime

that's somehow less unsettling than the original

Megan M

But what if...Cheadle is the dog who kills Killua???

Michael Weems

For the Zoldyck names thing, it's worth noting that in contemporary Japanese, puns/wordplay/neologisms like this are as likely to be in reference to English words as Japanese ones, so it could totally be as simple as "kill" for Killua and "illusion" for Illumi. Alluka is the one where the verb angle is clearest. As a sentence, 「あるか」 means "Is there?" or "Do you have?" and as noted 「何か」 means "something" or "somehow." Taken together, 「何かあるか」 would mean "Is there something wrong?" or "Did something happen?" Taken separately in the context of Alluka's power, it calls to mind a little dialogue where Nanika is asking someone "Do you have a wish?" "Something that you want?"
