I have so much manga to read now that it’s over.

I would love if we can see you all theorize about some upcoming random manga panels, similar to how you all had Jack guess "what is happening in this screenshot" prior to covering the anime. Obviously it would have to be some trusted friend that can use their judgment and discretion to pick the most innocuous manga panels and not spoil something outright. But it would be an incredible way to close off this season before you all get into the manga! (I have some great picks that I'd send your way if you're looking for input)

I'm so thankful that I found this podcast near it's inception, it's propelled the series in my estimation from one of the greats to probably my favorite of all time. The prodigious rise and return of demon world has been so fun to experience, and it's been a treat to have the show broken down with such love and granularity; I can't wait to see that gaze focus on even more. None the less I eagerly await y'all to cover my favorite arc in some nebulously distant future, and so too am I excited to see how you possibly cover it with any less granularity! Much love, as I try to cook up a question in time for the Q&A

Oh damn, I didn't catch the thing where Illumi uses she/her for Alluka in that single interaction and then switches back when he's away from Killua. I just checked the Japanese dialogue, and Illumi isn't using any gendered language for Alluka at any point in the scene, but it's a *super* clever choice from the dub translators for how to fill in the blanks, and it really does accentuate the sliminess of it all. (In general, it's very easy in Japanese to just not gender people without making any effort to avoid it, so translators often have to figure out for ourselves what gendered words to use in English based on whatever context we can glean. When you first pointed out at the start of the arc that there was interesting stuff going on with how people gendered Alluka, I went back to check, and this is a full list of every time Alluka gets gendered in episodes 137-139: - Episode 137, 21:52: Illumi refers to Alluka as a younger brother in conversation with Hisoka - Episode 138, 10:10: Silva refers to Alluka in a way I'd translate as "that thing" or "it", which felt worth including for reference - Episode 138, 13:43: Killua mentally refers to Alluka as his younger sister - Episode 138, 14:54, 18:00, 20:06: Three butlers in flashbacks address Alluka as "Young Master" (male-gendered) - Episode 139, 02:50: Milluki uses "younger brother(s)" to refer collectively to Kalluto and Alluka while talking to a tourist in a flashback I didn't keep as careful track in later episodes, but I did notice in episode 142 that Morel's also gendering Alluka male ("What? Your older brother wants to kill your younger brother?") after getting a rundown from Killua offscreen, so I'm not sure what's up with that one.)

One other thought on the decision not to include Kite in episode 1: The anime staff would have known how important Kite ended up being in the manga eventually, but it sounds like they might not have known at the start that the anime would reach the Chimera Ant Arc, at least not for certain: https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2013-02-20/hunter-x-hunter-anime-to-air-chimera-ant-arc So with that in mind, it maybe makes a bit more sense that they'd decide to leave him out, and run the risk of having to backfill later *if* they got greenlit for more cours past the end of Greed Island.

I joined the Patreon literally just to +1 the review that said “Please, when you feel like coming back to anime stuff, consider Utena.” Y’all brighten my day. Thanks :)

I procrastinated listening to this episode because I didn’t want it to be over 😭 I loved your breakdown of the HxH anime so much! May your media analysis heal the bad takes I have seen online, amen. 🙏🏻 Waiting eagerly for the bonuses— movie, manga, and musicals, right? (Jokingly adding musicals because I’m obsessed with them. The Nightmare of Zoldyck in particular.) Jokes aside, I am looking forward to future non-HxH Media Club Plus too! 💖 Thanks for what you do!
