Welcome to Media Club Plus: a podcast about diving into the media that interests us and the stories that excite us. This season we're watching a selection of M Night Shyamalan movies.

This episode we watched The Village and next time we'll be back with Lady in the Water.

The Village is an isolated, idyllic(?) settlement deep in the forest, surrounded by dangerous, territorial, but ultimately peaceable creatures called, by the Villagers, The Ones We Don't Speak Of. In this movie a generation of elders use fear and love to control a new generation of children, but the promises of the outside world (and the increasing danger and dissatisfaction inside the village itself) is too strong a call. The Village is a movie about where Peace and Innocence come from, how evils are movtivated by love and fear, but without a solid grasp on the answers to those questions. Sometimes boring and slow, sometimes exciting and beaituful, and often shallow and patronizing.

I don't think I'll ever have the ability to see a film the way Keith does. I wanna poke around in his brain and see how he gets to places.

This was a good ep but it was also very messy lol. I have to wonder what the perspective of a person who didn't watch this movie and just listens to the pod is, y'all jumped around a lot this time

Sopranos season confirmed unless you all decide to abandon that to fuck with me and my prediction personally

I do think it's worth covering split because in my mind it's kind of the apotheosis of M Nights reoccurring evil disability shit

i haven't been watching anything ahead of time for the M Night episodes, and this was fine. I did have to go look at the Wikipedia page for it when I was losing track of names, and I looked up one of the scenes mentioned on youtube, but it all came together in the end. I can see how it would be more approachable if you've already seen the film, though.

Listened to the last hour or so of this while on the ferry, and thought if I was a billionaire LARPer, I’d’ve bought an *island.*

I'm listening to the last half hour of this right now, and I have always remembered this moment where I saw a preview of Scott Pilgrim and one of the trailers was for Devil and everyone laughed when M. Night's name came on screen. Wow is there ever a lot to unpack there... Anyway this project is fascinating and I'm having a great time with this body of work I've mostly avoided.
