Welcome to Media Club Plus: a podcast about diving into the media that interests us and the stories that excite us. This season we're watching a selection of M Night Shyamalan movies.

This episode we watched Lady in the Water and next time we'll be back with The Happening. Also Check out the Patreon next week for a watchalong of The Last Airbender with special guest Austin Walker.

Lady in the Water, more like Lady OUT OF the Water! Bryce Dallas Howard is back and she's hanging out with Paul Giamatti who, as Cleaveland Heep, is a former doctor who retreats into superintendency after suffering a deep personal loss. Bryce Dallas Howard, Story, is a Narf: a kind of mystical water-dweller whose ancient pact with humanity was broken by our violence and greed. But the Narfs are returning to try to bring enlightenment to humanity. None of that really is in the movie, which mostly features running around an apartment building trying to figure out how to get the Narf home via eagle. It's a weird one!

Featuring Keith Carberry (@KeithJCarberry, @KeithJCarberry), Sylvi Bullet (@SYLVIBULLET), Ali Acampora (@Ali-online), Arthur Martinez-Tebbel (@amtebbel) and Janine Hawkins in her Media Club Plus debut.

Jeeze. This is one of the few M. Night movies I haven’t seen, and I totally forgot to watch it before this episode. I guess in the end it was probably for the best, but I was not prepared for the scrunts and the narfs and whatever when I started to listen, Ali’s “summary” in the beginning of the episode sounded like pure nonsense.

Yeah I've never watched this one either but always thought of it as the Shyamalan movie that was alright but was clowned on because of his later movies. Apparently not. I think the gang is right about Shyamalan being a fantastic director but a terrible writer. In another timeline he took the Harry Potter gig and continued to stick to directing other people's scripts and became one of the most well-respected directors of the 21st century.

I watched this on a day where I had edibles for the first time and my friend and I went to a local theater to see it. Peak cinema.

I am so so so sorry to be the person to comment in a "well, actually..." capacity on the topic of supernatural but I need to point out that one guy was confirmed gay and died immediately AND the other guy didn't say anything in response and got impaled on a rusty nail two episodes later and died to go on to be a perpetual bachelor in heaven, don't worry about it. The guy who goes on to have a blurry faced wife and son is the other brother. I also need to say that while seasons 8-11 are a desert that made many people quit the show, seasons 12-14 are kind of solid television, even good at times (if there is something wrong with you, which there is with me)

This episode made me feel a lot better as a person who only watched five seasons of Supernatural :V

I don't think this movie was very good, but I did enjoy watching it more than The Village, which I felt was truly bad the whole way through. This movie was mostly just boring, and occasionally pretty funny.

I remember reading once that Shyamalan came up with a whole theoretical framework for how the education system should operate, and if that's not a red flag, I don't know what is. At least David Lynch's work is incoherent on purpose.

Pausing my listen to say I don't know if it's an intentional move, but I weirdly enjoy noticing the ever-extending length of podcast before anyone says the actual name of the movie (this time pretty sure it's just over 14.5 minutes, at the start of Ali's summary). Podcast yappers 4eva 💜
