Welcome to Media Club Plus: a podcast about diving into the media that interests us and the stories that excite us. This season we're watching a selection of M Night Shyamalan movies.

This episode we watched Old, and next time we'll be back with our penultimate episode of the season: Knock at the Cabin.

You may have heard that Old is about the beach that makes you old. Well, it really is about that! You get to the beach, start getting old, and you don't stop until you die. Many people in life end up getting older at one point or another, but few as fast as the folks they put on the beach, and all the normal stuff that happens when you get older happens there, and some abnormal stuff too.

Featuring Keith Carberry (@KeithJCarberry), Sylvi Bullet (@SYLVIBULLET), Ali Acampora (@Ali-online), Arthur Martinez-Tebbel (@amtebbel) and Andrew Lee Swan (@Swandre3000)

Produced by Keith Carberry

Music by Jack de Quidt (available at notquitereal.bandcamp.com)

I started cracking up the second I read this headline

TrueLily

I had really mixed feelings about this movie because it wasn't boring but there were parts that really bothered me, but it also did make me cry.

related to the end of the ep: when i go to apple podcasts (australia), i do indeed only see 28 reviews, one of which is mine. thats wild!

compared to the 701 on US

Very interesting to hear M Night's aversion to ambiguity discussed here, with Knock at the Cabin coming next.

Shymalan doesn't just love beating you over the head with (what he believes to be) the theme. He loads the themes into a shotgun, takes careful aim, blows his own leg off below the knee, and then beats you over the head with the severed foot. Hilarious every time when he thinks he's onto something. Also please stop writing kids into your movies, buddy, please.

I honestly really love the concept of a corporation discovering a naturally recurring torment nexus, and going “oh this can save us so much time and money.”

I'm so excited to watch knock at the cabin door and hear your guys' thoughts. I read the book last year and while I had some issues with it I found the themes and ideas really profoundly interesting. Which makes me worried since it sounds like sandcastles had some really interesting thoughts that were not executed as well by the film. I did read the film versions Wikipedia article after finishing the novel and was kind of astonished by one of the changes.

You're too kind, it's impossible for me to not hate on Shyamalan. For my money, anything good about his films doesn't spring from him, it comes from hiring true pros like Khondji, Deakins, etc. Any reappraisal of his work should highlight that fact, if there must be one.

Porter Goldfinch

Gotta say I really do hope we get commentary about the book for Cabin as well as the movie if that's possible. Because I just read it and watched the movie and I'm going nuts.

Porter Goldfinch

Since following this MC+ project, my wife and I have frequently said that Shyamalan is an idiot who thinks he needs to dumb down his big ideas. "Takes careful aim, blows his own leg off" is so much better

JMundy Creations

What throws me is that he keeps getting people to fund re-growing the leg, so he can open up again on the new one with both barrels. Half-baked, incoherent, pretty racist re: black people! So strange!

I think “Mixed feelings” really is the perfect encapsulation of M Night’s stuff. A lot of it hangs are 50% on RT and meta critic has CinemaScores around C+. To me they have high highs but some low lows and then a lot that’s just kinda there. Mixed feelings sees right for what the movies do, I can see how some people would find them trite and bad and others could say it was good and fun. To me that’s part of what makes him an interesting director, his filmography and the films themselves being so split like this.
