I was recently commissioned to make an album cover and had some fun trying out a process of image making that's been giving me good results.

The client (feels fancy saying that) wanted somthing with "3d and flat" elements, like the apartment wall art I've posted here and on twitter previously.

The best of that stuff came out of tracing photographs with the blender knife tool and then extruding those elements out to create depth as well as distortions in whatever texture I apply.

I had zero idea for what photographs to use, but dug through an old folder where I'd saved some flags of Finnish townships (or something) years ago for an art project with Ville Kallio. I made a few fast collages of bits from those flags+a couple figures from a Gustave Moreau painting and went to work with the process of tracing, extruding, and trying different textures until the client had one they liked.

I documented the making of this thing a fair bit so it seems worth sharing, as well as showing a little peak into the process of making this stuff.

i feel like the knife tool is a taboo in blender for some reason, but the stuff you make with it is really cool
