Love this film. I have feel close to this because in college I worked on the stage production team for my stage production 101 class putting together the set for my college’s production of Little Shop of Horrors. I helped build the shop and Audrey II. :)

Just to let you know the stage play musical has a much darker and wackier ending. You should also checkout the Director’s cut of the Little Shop of Horrors film you just watched. They restore the actual stage play ending to the film. It’s the ending they actually wanted to use but the studio wanted a happy ending.

I think that's the one that I found. It ended VERY differently. 😊 I'd watched it way back in the 80's when it came out, and that had the ending that you guys watched. I didn't know that there was an alternate version.

What???!! I’m so curious!

Yes, basically once Seymour is sneaking out trying to leave it becomes a completely different ending from there and longer. The director’s cut is 11 minutes longer than the theatrical cut.

As I understand it, it wasn't so much the studio that wanted the happy ending, it was the test audience. And I frankly agree with the test audiences in this case. A happy ending fit the tone of the movie better. On the flip side, the original ending written and shot by James Cameron to Terminator 2 was the god-awful "happy" ending on the playground. But it was eventually changed theatrically to the ambiguous, somber ending (reusing the highway footage and a simple voice-over) in which Sarah and Jon's futures were unknown, as was the future of humanity. That re-used highway ending, which was not the original one, also fit that movie's tone better.

Ellen Greene, who plays Audrey, has had a long career as a cabaret singer, a Broadway star, and has been in a few movies and tv shows, but she is mostly known for her role as Audrey. She is the original Audrey and will always be the bar for what an Audrey is supposed to be. :)
