** NO SPOILERS - BACKGROUND INFO ONLY ** "Heated Rivalry" is the second book in Rachel Reid's "Game Changers" series, with each book focusing on different gay hockey players. Both Books 2 and 6 center on the characters Shane and Ilya. The show and the books are proudly 100% Canadian, and most of the cast and crew are Canadian. However, Connor Storrie, the actor who portrays Ilya, is originally from Texas. The show's creator, Jacob Tierney, is known for creating other successful hockey-themed shows on Crave, such as "Letterkenny" and "Shoresy." Crave, the Canadian streaming channel, filmed the entire season in just 37 days on a relatively small budget. The show has received praise for its outstanding performances, direction, writing, and cinematography, and it has already been greenlit for a second season (Book 6). The main cast has signed contracts committing to three seasons. HBO has licensed the show from Crave for distribution in the United States; however, HBO does not operate in Canada, and most HBO shows air in Canada on Crave. Rachel Reid, the author of the books, has two sons who are both on the autism spectrum. This experience significantly influenced her writing, particularly in the characterization of Shane Hollander. Reid did not intentionally set out to portray Shane as autistic; rather, she created him as "uptight, anxious, and focused." Through learning about her children's neurodivergence, she realized that she had inadvertently written Shane with many autistic symptoms and traits. Both Jacob Tierney and lead actor Hudson Williams recognized Shane's neurodivergence and depicted it accordingly in the TV adaptation. Hudson Williams noted that he based his performance on his own father, who is autistic. As a result, Shane often takes things too literally, appears uncomfortable in his own skin, has a flat affect in his voice, and his eyes sometimes express more emotion than his face. Hudson did an amazing job.

Great reactions, can't wait for the later episodes.

I ran to the Patreon for this. I just want to say that in episode one, Ilya was having trouble at the All-Star press conference because he couldn't process English so quickly. He was having trouble translating everything,

Fear of Reactions

Don't make us wait a week for the next reactions pls. The Reel Rejects put their reactions up quick. Within like 5 days... I'm just saying lol. Love the reaction. One of the best I've seen

Fear of Reactions

Would love for Achara and someone else to do reactions to this show as well. Jaby?? Kristen?? ALL 3....

Okay a couple of quick points from episode one, which is all I’ve watched with you so far. They’re both the same age. They were both born in 1991 and Shane is actually a month older. Ilya is more experienced but just as far in the closet in the states as he is in Russia. They both have concerns with their careers but Ilya also would not be able to go back to Russia if he was publicly outed. Just some things to keep in mind. For the first episodes you see all their meetings. Like there were no meetings in between.

Lauren

Ilya wasn’t losing confidence at the press conference. He’s been in America for like two years on and off at this point and they asked him a six part question in English. Shane stepped in because he realized Ilya didn’t fully understand the question. The reporter was an idiot is the issue. 😂

I''m so impressed by your reaction to this series. While many reactors dismiss the sexual intimacy as 'porn'—despite accepting similar straight scenes in shows like Bridgerton, True Blood and Game of Thrones—your maturity is incredibly refreshing. You clearly understand that these scenes aren't for shock value; they are essential to the story and go a long way in normalizing the queer experience.

Just a few thoughts... They are both the same age; in fact, Shane might actually be a couple of months older than Ilya according to the book. Ilya's obvious experience and security with his sexuality (even though he's closeted) may give people the impression that he's older. In the balcony scene Ilya was upset because he was going back to Russia in three days, not Boston. He hasn't lived in Boston long enough to consider or call it 'home'. Due to his privilege and relationship with his parents, Shane just assumes that going home to your family would be a good thing and really can't comprehend it actually being traumatic. Even with the look on Ilya's face, Shane doesn't pick it up. The issue at the press conference wasn't Ilya's confidence, it was the language barrier: the reporter asked a very complex question, and Ilya had to translate it into Russian, come up with a response, and then translate that response back into English all in a matter of seconds.

There’s a fascinating dominant/submissive dynamic between Ilya and Shane. Contrary to claims that Ilya is manipulating or coercing Shane, their relationship actually fulfills deeper psychological needs for both of them. Shane’s suffocatingly controlled life makes "letting go" feel freeing, while Ilya's chaotic life needs the anchor of being in charge. This is a mutually beneficial concensual arrangement. Importantly, Ilya only has the power that Shane allows him, so Shane is truly in control. A prime example of Shane enjoying this is seen after he asks, "Are you going to f*** me?" When Ilya replies, "We will see," Shane's smirk of excitement shows he’s loving every minute. Shane is not a weak—he’s pushed back against Ilya before. His current participation is because he’s enjoying it, not because he’s being forced. The early episodes quickly established that Ilya highly values consent and would never force Shane to do anything against his will.

Please keep in mind there are no “out” hockey players in the nhl in 2026 and Ilya is on a temporary visa. And the series starts when they are 17. Ilya was only in Canada for the tournament and has to go home. If they are discovered their careers are over before they start. It’s also unusual that Shane’s parents don’t care about corporate endorsements for themselves. It’s all for Shane. They are well off. A lot of athletes have problems with family expecting to be supported not just ones from Russia.
