Sunnydee

Yayyyy, hopefully The New Edition Story is coming soon

Talia Herron

Yes, they need to reach back in the vault and watch the original Sparkle. I would also like them to watch some Blaxploitation films from the 70s.

Damn. I got excited, hoping it was the original version, but I understand. I've seen the original 1000x but it probably wouldn't get many views because I don't know anyone my age who's really familiar with the original. The remake just isn't as good.

Still requesting these and some additional movies in any order... 1. Beyond The Lights (Creator Of Love & Basketball) 2. Paid In Full (Highly Rated in the community) 3. Belly (Highly Rated in the community - DMX, Nas , T-Boz, etc) 4. How To Be A Player (Funny) 5. Booty Call (Funny) 6. Woo (Funny - I think this is for sure Jaby's humor) 7. Lean On me (A Classic) 8. Dead Presidents (A Classic) 9. Seven Pounds (Will Smith) 10. Funny Valentines (Loretta Devine, Alfre Woodard- Chile...)

Also, what would ya'll think about maybe once a week/month posting ya'll upcoming watchlist schedule? Just so those of us who have been requesting the same movies over and over can see if their requests are in the queue or not. Just a suggestion

Hope y’all can react to Beyond The Lights , Black and Blue, Moonlight, and The Fighting Temptations soon ☺️

Just to add some context, y’all didn’t react to the original Sparkle, and that matters. The original came out in 1976 and was loosely inspired by the rise of The Supremes and follows three sisters navigating music, fame, and life. It’s a cult classic in the Black community. It starred Irene Cara and Lonette McKee (who you just saw in Jungle Fever). A lot of us who watch your Black cinema reactions grew up on that version. That’s the one we love. Between Sparkle (1976) and Cooley High (1975), those movies stayed in rotation. We’ve seen them countless times. The remake took YEARS to happen. Whitney Houston had the rights for a long time and originally wanted Aaliyah to play Sparkle. Aaliyah was already signed on to the project before she tragically passed away. After that, the project stalled, and Whitney held onto it until she found the right person, which ended up being Jordin Sparks. Man, do I wish we got that Aaliyah version. Also, some of the questions y’all had were actually answered in the original. The remake changed certain storylines, so if it feels like something’s missing, it’s probably because the original handled it differently.... LIKE LEVI. A lot of us already know those answers because we grew up with that version. And I get it, when y’all did Shaft, it didn’t do the numbers you probably expected, so you might be a little hesitant about another 70s film. But honestly, I think most of us who were requesting Sparkle were talking about the original. It might be worth checking out, even if it’s just something you watch on your own. It’s a little darker, and the filmmaking is from a different era, but it’s still a movie a lot of us truly cherish. One more thing about the music, because Jaby mentioned he loves that sound. Soundtracks back then were done differently. They often had one main artist do the entire soundtrack. In Sparkle, the actresses actually sang in the movie, but if you buy the 1976 soundtrack, it’s Aretha Franklin singing all the songs, and it’s incredible. I still keep it in rotation. Another great one is Gladys Knight’s soundtrack for Claudine (1974), and Cooley High (1975) has “It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday,” which was later remade by Boyz II Men. I've seen many requests for those 2 movies as well.

Donnie

I suggest getting everybody who hasn’t watched Whitney Houston’s “The Bodyguard” and drop that
