If y’all haven’t seen it, you should check out one of my favorite Jeffrey Wright movies, Lady in the Water. Released in 2006, it’s an urban fairytale/dark fantasy written, directed, and starring M. Night Shyamalan, alongside Paul Giamatti and Bryce Dallas Howard. The film is based on a bedtime story he told his two daughters, which he kept expanding over time until it became a movie, filled with mythological themes and whimsical storytelling. For some reason, it got a really bad rap and was his least well-received film at release, but it’s since developed a loyal cult following. For me, it’s right in line with movies like The Princess Bride and Stardust—I just love it. The story centers on the universal human need for community, belonging, and, most importantly, a sense of purpose. Shyamalan does a great job in front of the camera, on top of writing and directing, and it’s clear the story is very personal to him given its origins and the care put into how it’s told visually. The negative critical reception felt unfair (and honestly, I think it may have been influenced by how he portrayed a film critic character, but that’s just my opinion). Overall, I think it’s a misunderstood masterpiece that’s absolutely worth watching
