When I first saw this (2011, 12 or 13 I'd have to say) I didn't have any idea who he was bc I'm an older fart who doesn't watch movies like his (or have a daughter) lol. Earlier she was saying stuff that sounded like nonsense; but was it...?? Somehow she also felt/heard the echoes of screams from the Bushwhacked transport? AND don't forget from the pilot, Simon's MOST important statement about he and his sister (slightly condensed yet still 3+ lines lol): "I am very smart... ...GIFTED is the term. So when I tell you that my little sister makes me look like an idiot child; I want you to understand my full meaning. River was more than gifted... She was gift. Everything she did... ...There was NOTHING that didn't come as naturally to her as BREATHING does to us. And, she could be a real BRAT about it too..." My theory about the Tam parents: I see them as being almost obviously PLAYING at being obtuse, and Simon doesn't pick up on it. I also though the mom was worse at it than Dad. I think they know full well that River is part of some experiment, and they for lack of better phrasing 'sold her' to the alliance because THEY WERE ALREADY AFRAID OF HER. Yeah they knew River was correcting Simon's spelling at age 3, etcetera... So of course Dad is paranoid when Simon starts asking questions and having secret meetings, etc. That's MY theory, no spoilers. From others I have heard that River actually meant Mal when she said, "We won't be here long. Daddy will come and take us home." I like this idea. Couple more things: You asked how they knew Simon was a doctor. You noticed someone was watching from the bushes before the gunfight. That was the Hill People who snatched Simon. You are right to ask whether any of these storylines will have any payoff. Well the fans rallied to have them make that movie too... Yes there are Graphic novels, full length novels, BOTH of which read/feel just like the show imho. They are all considered canon. One graphic novel is imo a must-read for Firefly fans. Later! 🤘😎🎸

I brought thos up in your YouTube video, but the reason River goes barefoot often is because her actress Summer Glau found the boots uncomfortable, and made it hard for her to focus on her acting, so Summer asked Joss if she could take them off, and Joss liked the idea.
