One thing that I think you guys missed is that John is the actually already the one that is in charge after getting the job in the interview but he has to make Hal feel like Hal’s the one in charge and that he is Hal’s trainee/replacement. That would be a tough job to pull off. There is an old time film that has similar dynamic between its two leads and that is Going My Way (1944).
