Great episode! Re Somaliland, Somalia and Ethiopia: The underlying clan tensions are even worse when you consider Somalia’s history. Siad Barre, Somalia’s long time strong man, waged a war of extermination against one of the largest clans of Somaliland, the Isaaq. Though his regime was ostensibly anti-clan, Barre’s father and brother were murdered by Isaaq clan members when he was a kid. His clan was connected to the Somalis of the Ogaden (he was born in the Ogaden, and his strongest base of support was from clans connected to the Ogaden; this was one of the reasons why he was so obsessed with annexing the region) and he used paramilitaries recruited from these clans (the remnants of the WSLF, the pro Somalia rebel group that fought with the Somali army) to exterminate the Isaaq. They killed tens of thousands- completely destroyed Hargesia. Understandably, the Isaaq are among the strongest supporters of Somaliland independence. If there was a war between Ethiopia and Somalia over Somaliland it will be uglier than most would expect. Siad Barre and his wars may be worth an episode. His career (and his governance of Somalia) provides a lot of context to this developing region of conflict.

"We have held ourselves accountable." Amazing. Maybe the Nazis should have tried that at Nuremberg.

People are quick with episodes dropping. It's only been 4 hours and people have already listened to and are commenting. Nice.

So much love to Catherine, her brother & your family. Ive been there at the end for people in my life, it was hard but I have been so grateful to have that time every day.

Bless Brendan sparing two old men from spending minutes trying to remember the name of Jenga

Actually choked on my coffee hearing about the melodramatic rapist/slaver crying over taxation

I DO mean to offend any libertarians- your ideology is repugnantly stupid and has never been shown to work anywhere, in any time, despite numerous attempts. Just admit you’re a selfish cunt and stop bothering us about how “tAXes ArE stEAliNg”

Sean Atkinson

Somalia and Sudan are one of General Ramsey Clarks 7 countries in 5 years. Huh. Wish our hosts would consider increasing their coverage of our companies, our "intelligence" agencies and our military sectors responsibility in all this (horn of Africa wars).

Doug Cartel

Libertarians sound normal but the minute you scratch the surface you find some really psychotic shit underneath "Yeah I think people should generally be allowed to do whatever as long as they arent hurting anyone" "Yeah I mean cannibalizing corpses is a victimless crime" Whether this is just US libertarians or not idk

Doug Cartel

I dont even really care what org venezuela uses for election transparency, american shenanigans in the country have convinced me that whatever the anti-Maduro opposition says needs to be heavily vetted. Just the same that doesnt mean I think maduro a saint, these are nation-states doing nation-state things.

The A10 gatling is 30mm and the recoil is insane, so the AH64 is probably still an auto cannon (or the gatling is .30cal/7.62mm) Sorry I'm sperging out rn

Don't know where the best place to put this is, but I read your piece in the Baffler (@ John) and enjoyed it! You know, as much as one can enjoy a short piece that talks about war :).

Deregulate nuclear technology NOW

There’s a segregation academy in Columbia, SC named after James H. Hammond

By the way, the Dr Who episode is "The Talons of Weng Chiang" (not "Chung"). I think John might have been conflating it with Wang Chung -- which I point out mainly to give others the opportunity to imagine the mashup. Also, from memory I was sure that was the episode the 1987 Max Headroom incident hijacked, but Wikipedia says I've misremembered. Oh well.

Johan Stefonski

The crisis in Venezuela is purely America's doing. I'm beyond caring if the election was "free and fair". Any means of resistance to US hegemony is tolerable to me at this point. If there was an opposition that wasn't an obvious puppet this would be an entirely different conversation.

David Andrews

Another good episode. It seem that the only thing that might change US foreign policy is an internal collapse.

Extremely surprising and telling article from the BBC on Ukraine. They speak to an "anonymous officer" on the front lines in Donetsk, and he's very openly critical about the overall strategy. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c1epe546p5vo The majority of the article is pretty negative in tone, and the "bad news" isn't buried like it usually is. They're really leaning into it a lot more. Also idk how to hyperlink it lol

Kevin Hickey

This is correct place for your enthusiasm 🫡

It’s called Hammond School now but it was called James H. Hammond Academy. It opened in 1966 and lost its tax exempt status in the early 1970s for failing to adopt a nondiscrimination policy.

re: the southern planter class. Greg Grandin says Liberty in the US White Nationalist imagination ultimately equates being an American with the freedom to enslave and likewise equates the deprivation or restriction on such "rights" as a degradation to the very status of slave. this association begins long before the civil war and continues today in teaparty style libertarianism and related white nationalist and free trade ideologies

Kyle Erickson

re:re: Grandin and the southern planter class. In The End of the Myth he recounts a story where pre-presidential Andrew Jackson was marching some slaves, chain gang style, up the Natchez Trace. He got stopped by a frontier authority because he technically wasn’t supposed to be violating Native land, and was asked for his passport and the documentation on the slaves he was marching. Jackson pulls out a copy of the constitution, saying that’s those are the only papers he needs, and is promptly let on his way. Jackson compares the experience to being treated as a slave himself, gets the frontier authority fired, and threatens to burn him alive
