Guest: Annibale

In part 2 of our series on the Battles of Nomonhan, Annibale takes us to the main battles between Imperial Japan and the Soviet Union, in March 1939, and in July-August 1939, changing how World War II played out in both Europe and the Far East/Pacific.

Commenting before listening but with trump officially tarrifing India over Russian oil, can mark provide his theory on why trump has done a complete 180 on Russia/Ukraine? A few months ago it was “Bidens war” lol. My guess is it’s his way of giving the finger to his anti interventionist constituents and allies, because they’ve been somewhat critical lately. They all hate Ukraine so it’s an easy FU for trump

I think him and his advisors genuinely thought he could make a deal with Russia that would allow for some retained US/Western military presence in Ukraine; essentially stalemating the conflict and maybe accepting the loss of Donetsk, Luhansk, Crimea and any other Russian occupied territory. I think they thought it would be an easy trade/equation. That might have been a good offer to the Russian govt back in 2024, when the Russian advance was much slower and there were still regular Ukrainian excursions along the whole Russian/Ukrainian border, but the situation is much better for Russia now and Ukraine's prospects are looking worse and worse. It was clear from about two months ago that the US's original stance offer was not going to be accepted. So after spending a fair bit of time recalibrating their approach, Trump and his govt are trying new approaches to try and push for what I assume will be basically the same stalemate with formal territorial exchange. The new sanctions and tariffs are the stick, would they actually offer a decreased military presence in Ukraine, or a real committment to leave Ukraine out of NATO once the border stabilizes? I would not be surprised at this point, and I can't see Russia accepting a deal unless such things are offered. Or, Trump only campaigned on ending the war and never actually intended to end it. That wouldn't be surprising either...

I think he doesn't like that NATO allied forces are losing and it chafes him that Putin doesn't ask "how high" when he says "jump"

I had read somewhere a claim that Russian Cavalry officers had been enthused by the cavalry actions of the American Civil War and rebuilt their doctrine in the late 1800's accordingly, and that mindset was taken into the red army during the civil war

The KMT was a member party in the Comintern the USSR basically wanted the communists to dissolve into the left wing of the KMT on the basis that China first needed to complete the bouguise revolution

I attended a birthday party in 1977 in Tehran (we lived there) as a 10-year-old, where the featured entertainment was the movie Bugsy Malone. One of the previews was for a film called Escape from Manchuria, and it showed a Japanese soldier getting run over by a Soviet tank. I never forgot that.

I think annibale’s comparison of Japan in the 30s to Vietnam and later America is brilliant. Especially if we’re taking the kwantung army for the CIA

Has parallels with the Texas Revolution too!

Would also love an episode about the IJN and how the battleship Yamato, as a singular piece of hardware, was built to embody the Élan of Japan…. and then gets sunk by the U.S. Navy during a last-ditch effort suicide attack.

Annibale had an encyclopedia for a brain I’m convinced. Has he written any books that are available?

The Japanese paranoia about a surprise attack is ironic given opening sneak attacks were their whole strategy for starting wars since Port Arthur .

My guess is that anything Annibale has written is under his real name, and is kept under lock and key in the desk drawers of a handful of competent policy makers and nato commanders.
