You’re right - the security guard Thane Eugene Caesar did have a pistol.

Garibaldi

Mauser made a series of hunting rifles in 30-06 based off of their military rifle action around the 1960s. A 200m shot with one of those isn't *easy* but well within the capability of any deer hunter.

Standing the Gaff

Dated May 8 2019, senior Canadian Liberal cabinet minister Chrystia Freeland, has a public facebook photo where she is shaking hands with Parubiy. The brief caption concludes: "Canada stands with Ukraine and its vibrant democracy!"

Scott

Freeland has had a bunch of controversy due to her father's (grandfather's?) history with Ukrainian nationalists

Schaeffer Mallory

I still think the range of the shot isn't what's impressive/unusual, it's that there was only one shot, and then an immediate getaway. That seems professional to me. Crooks fired off like 7 shots (obviously he missed but still)

Frank

There've been one or two attempts with drones. I want to say someone tried a drone with a grenade against a south American president buyt I can't reccall any details.

Ezra de Leon

Her grandfather ran a pro-Nazi newspaper.

T

The drone assassinations will start once the Ukrainians start up their own Operation Condor

Self-Replicate

pretty sure this was aimed at maduro during a military parade

JoR

Have to wonder if there could be some psyop aspect of the assassination. Maybe Israel? lol. My first thought was they wanted to kill a supporter of theirs to have some sort of PR victory Mark discussed the anonymous center/left reaction and I can speak a tiny bit on the non anonymous (and equally awful) counterpart to that: LinkedIn. I generally see a lot of liberals there who constantly post standard stuff about trump, ice, etc. but the Kirk thing genuinely scares them . Granted these aren't elite people, or even the high end of the middle manager class. But the general consensus is this is a true tragedy and there's this general rhetoric of "look at what division is doing to America ! Killed for your opinion" Idk what will come of it but this seems like a gift wrapped opportunity for the right, if they even need that right now

aqueous_steve

I think something that older generations miss is that to them social media is kinda fake bs but to younger generations it is their reality. So taking out Charlie Kirk is more impactful in the social media space they exist in than it would be to take out a more classic power broker. It’s not about actually changing something, it’s about taking the fight from social media into the real world, rather than the other way around.

JoR

Also on the Israel assassination attempt, my thought was the success or failure was irrelevant for them. They just wanted to piss off Qatar and make any pretense of negotiations that much more difficult and irrelevant. So they can move forward with the final steps of genocide and stuff. Don’t really see the vision myself but I think they just want to end it the way they want

Yairo Martis

**Someone** tried to kill Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela a few years ago, during a parade or something.

Yairo Martis

He missed Trump, but hit that guy and the crane behind him.

Years of Leaded Gasoline

Elsie Hupp

Hillary Clinton on the Grassy Knoll strikes again!

Elsie Hupp

Even so Brutus still succeeded after bringing a knife to a gunfight.

Elsie Hupp

Any Musk Social Credit connection there?

That Guy

I think we've perfectly encapsulated the latter 20th and early 21st centuries.

With the elevation too, he’s not having to adjust his targeting at all, that bullet is virtually flying a straight line to target. Laying down too.. it is easy to get a dead still rifle trained on something. The buck fever or Charlie fever would be the most difficult part of it all, making sure u don’t screw ur trigger pull. U probably know this but I am thinking out loud

David Haigh

The Kirk thing, with the audio especially, gave echoes of Voltaire('s biographer) "I dissaprove of who you shoot, but I will defend to the death your right to shoot them"

Methew

How did Charlie go back and to the left if he wasn’t shot from behind :0

M.K.

Mark forgot how Marjorie Taylor Green blamed "Jewish Space Lasers" for the wildfires, I think it was last year. So I think it's safe to say she's antisemitic. Or at least has some very weird thoughts about Jewish people.

Michael Coutts

Spot on assessment about Kirk and taking up the mantel of the moral majority/Christian nationalists. My bet is on an accelerationist.

Ollin

I’m curious what you guys thoughts are on the escalation in Poland

Quinn Tucker

I was so sure it was gonna be a straightforward "fairly boring but crazy moderate or left leaning guy" in the audience caught immediately but you really could not imagine a better strategy of tension outcome than the shooter getting away anonymous. Its probably more than well enough explained by law enforcement incompetence, which also helps the tension conspiracy angle even if its true lol. The right blames the left/libs anyway, the left is (naturally) outright celebrating or at least not at all upset, libs are shaming the left about how sad they should be and pointing fingers every which way. This really feels like it will be pointed to as the real inflection point of the schizophrenic wave of political violence building in this country, of course based in part on sketchy as hell pmc/intelligence/whatever goons like the minnesota assasin. Even if there has been, somehow, absolutely no even tangential state involvement in any of it so far, you could not imagine a better time for an extremely effective op if whatever agency or the whole trump admin itself takes the chance. We already have ex-military people going around teaching "secret" workshops on how to make kill lists of political opponents, recently stopped where I live and was OPENLY ENDORSED by the sheriff. There's already cold war levels of insanity bubbling against an enemy even more ill-defined than it was when there was a fucking soviet union. Things are going to get worse, as we all kind feel, but, man, it would be so easy for things to get MUCH worse.

Alec

Joe S.

Could be a professional, or could just be a decent hunter who wants a clean kill with one shot.

Donnacha O'Brien

The carcano is fine. US users later fired an incorrect cardtidge that didn't engage the rifling. It's fine by WW2 standards.

William

Weird, video shows that he flew back and to the.. left?

William

I think I prefer the years of lead poisoning, popularized by others

CR

Dismissing the death of a villain and parasite like the CEO of the Blackstone Real Estate Investment Trust is fucking wack. I still don't understand why Mark is willing to die on the hill that it was an accident that this guy managed to kill the person most singularly responsible for Blackstone being the largest owner of single-family homes because fuck humanity.

CR

Exactly. Once we Paperclip all their Nazis into the U.S., those skills will become widely distributed. Right now, it's still a specialty to race them, let alone use them as weapons.

The Squash

Love the show. Canadian living in the states. Political violence is abhorrent. First amendment rights are important. I get this is a comedy podcast. Still very disturbed by recent events.

electradescending

I think drone assassinations are the next step also. It has been already tried with Maduro in 2018 and nobody seems to have solved that one. Dissidents claimed it was a "false flag" but a couple of shadowy twitter accounts claiming to be either expat organizations or mutinous Jr. officers claimed credit.

Garibaldi

Agree, the crazy part about this isn't the gunplay.

Hector Jaime

I agree with john. Killing Charlie Kirk is like tackling the head cheerleader at a football game.

Hector Jaime

On another note, lately I’ve been thinking of Empire Wilderness by Robert Kaplan, who’s a neoliberal shill. But, the premise is, from what I remember, if people want a glimpse at the USA’s future, don’t look north towards Canada or Europe, but south towards Latin America. I grew up on the AZ/Mexico border and remember federal police and military “razos” patrolling the streets of Nogales, Mexico, dragging kids to jail for sporting punk rock haircuts. Add political assassinations and, bingo!

Matt

Now that it's clear that it was a Fuentes Groyper that did it, it's fascinating that the political violence all comes from the right wing against the right wing.

showlistener

Extremely off topic - I've been re-listening to the 100 years war series and I was wondering if anyone had a Louis XI book recommendation?

Schaeffer Mallory

I'm extremely confused about a new ish aspect of this that I haven't seen any official explanation for: he apparently had the rifle fully assembled and shoved in his pants on his way there, but then disassembled in his backpack on the way off the roof, and then reassembled and left in the woods?

Schaeffer Mallory

Yeah him being a hunter/from a LE family makes sense. Now I'm totally fixated on the chain of events that has him limping towards campus with the assembled rifle shoved in his pants, but leaping off the building without an assembled rifle (the footage of him only shows him with a backpack), and then the assembled rifle being found in the woods

Jason Thompson

Maybe there’s been more political assassinations lately because of social media, basically. People are constantly immersed in politics, and it’s much easier to find and track politicians (and any public figure).

Ben

You guys think Oswald killed JFK?

Gergely Gáli

Word on the street is that Kirk was about to change his stance on Israel.

Ben

You mean with the mail order bolt action Carcano that would have been impossible to shoot and aim three times that quickly?

LET ME DELETE MY ACCOUNT YOU FUCKING ASSHOLES

Back and to the left. "some misidentified the weapon as a German Mauser and that information quickly went out to the news media. Later, after Dallas Police crime lab investigator Carl Day examined the weapon further he found it was an Italian weapon "

Benjamin Glover

Stay strong on the shoulder recovery, Mark. John is right - joints that are not load bearing tend to be more difficult to do physio for. It's a long and boring process and spoilers: if you don't do the exercises it won't magically stop hurting. The upside is all those exercises are to make the pain eventually recede on top of restoring strength and flexibility. I recommend slippers, food you can prepare and eat with your good arm, and not attempting to put on socks one handed.

Dan Kolbert

I think Oswald killed Kirk

Jeremy

Surely John doesn’t truly believe Oswald was JFKs killer

Annibale

I don't know any substantial biography of him written in English, except for Paul Murray Kendal "Louis XI: The Universal Spider", which was published in 1971 and is somewhat dated. Adrianna Bakos's "Images of Kingship in Early Modern France: Louis XI in Political Thought, 1560–1789" is fantastic, but it is more about Louis's image with political commentators than about Louis's life. Almost all recent French-language books on him are very good, though
