Yeah even supergums Kirk knew this was a dumb move. I still can’t believe.

cstenzy

The amount of blue check BREAKING slop going around on Twitter (thanks to the Boer's engagement farming ofc) is gonna have me start relying on MSM again

William

Why doesn’t Brendon ever say goodbye to me :((((((((((((

William

That clip of Trump sounds awful; how much has he aged??

William

All the radars are being taken out? THAAD doesn’t bode well for the missile defense

That Guy

Iran should name their next generation of missiles after Abrams because they have totally embodied the "They have us surrounded again, the poor bastards" quote.

Max

Dang I’ve been following this constantly and this still has so much good info. The era that started in the 70s (1973? 1979?) is ending now I think. Short of starting a nuclear wwiii over Taiwan this is the most insane thing trump could have possibly done. To quote another expert on the subject: we are in deep kimchi

Ander Pierce

Really grim and terrible stuff. I threw together $1,000 to buy a short term oil spot ETF yesterday, seeing oil close down for the day with the Strait closed and no sign of opening was too easy of a bet. Not positive on the trade yet but I'll be shocked if it doesn't work out in my favor.

Max

Man it’s even worse imo. Even Bloomberg is shockingly dogshit.

Master and Commander Biden

Netanyahu’s got all of Graham’s “ladybugs” photographed and cataloged like a pro entomo-proctologist

mike

Terrible circumstances but a really great ep guys, thank you for the info

Max

Look up MIT professor Ted Postol. I mean the economics don’t work even if it did but all this shit is basically useless with the most basic countermeasures. The most generous reason we are paying for this stuff is there’s no plan B: end of wars whereb byou can hit the other guy but he can’t hit you. The only reason it was doing anything is Iran is still using mostly old missiles.

Michael Conlin-Elsen

Man, it would be great to hear from Cyrus about the roles of Lebanon and Iraq in particular

Ander Pierce

Death penalty for posting videos in Bahrain is wild

Targnar

"There is a difference here: If Israel commits war crimes, the US press won't go near it. If the US commits a war crime, some elements of the US press might bring it up." Something about frogs and how much they like hot tubs.

Breakaway

Found the irgc numbers station

Daniel Capshaw

It is a small thing but I find it comforting to hear Mark say "the date today", there is a sing songyness to it, a rhythm. Hope everyone is managing as best they can and doing what they can to resist this cruel society. As John Prine wrote "your flag decal won't get you into heaven anymore, they're already overcrowded from your dirty little war" and this dirty war is lead by a man who has seemingly accepted his soul is hellbound.

Faisal Sultan

Good point about media not caring to report israeli war crimes. Its likely they know Mossad thugs operate in the US and will kill them.

Martin

Seems like Iranian government have been planning for this since the end of JCPOA. Maybe even earlier.

vincent paixao

First of all, great analysis. Really, super insightful stuff man. Second of all, they don’t need a bunch of “cards”. It’s an attrition game genius.

Martin

I don’t think it will be possible to get minute to minute updates that are accurate in the large scale, just small scale anecdotal stories. EI weekly livestream, Justin Podur weekly sit-reps are usually reliable, Free Palestine TV is doing on the ground reporting in Lebanon.

William

Sorry, I just wrote that to make a stupid pun

William

Who tf is he

Joshua Garcia

What if our leaders truly thought we all (as a nation) owned stocks in defense. It’s amazing how confidently people assume things. I wouldn’t put it past them.

Mungo Franczak

Iran has the capacity to continue to develop and safely store drones and missiles within its extremely mountainous terrain. Meanwhile the US Empire has to relocate all their interceptors from the far east theater to the Middle East, which is seemingly, inadvertently leading to a formal peace treaty between the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Who’s really out of cards here?

showlistener

When Trump said he had 3 guys in mind who could take over Iran but they got killed in the strike that took out Khamenei, was that A) bullshit B) not bullshit, and an accident C) not bullshit, and the Israelis intentionally took them out too because they want Iran to be a failed state Not that it really matters anyway since the US has no ability to pick and choose who runs Iran, but I'm just curious what others think.

Dunc

Lol

JoR

I’m leaning towards A. Only because, the idea that they’d do what they did in Venezuela, take our #1 and let a lackey take command, seems dubious. If only because of the 47 years of institutional and cultural momentum of “get the Mullahs out!” In US culture. This is including the elites, the military institutions, and even the general public (at least conservatives). I don’t think trump has a plan for Iran, but I really don’t think he just wanted to pick another “mullah” to take over. It would be kinda demoralizing

JoR

I think it’s interesting that the missile launches seem to be lessening. That could mean anything. But the card they will always have is “destroying every Saudi oil field and desalination plant”. Doesn’t matter how depleted their reserves are: this can be accomplished with any of their weapons. A last resort, but it would be potentially crippling to “our” already fragile economy and relations in the mid east

JoR

Most clear and concise RWN comment-section comment

Miko

That picture of drunk petey is giving me psychic damage every time I see it.

NYCM&AHole

Yeah man the dudes who cheered the drone hitting the radar sounded so happy. I hear Bahrain is in Saudi Arabia, another Emirati is in Egypt, and Dubai pissed off both Saudi Arabia and Egypt so they’re fucked if the people take up arms against the rulers.

William

“Awful. Simply horrific. Anyways I made a bet on oil going up, we’ll see if I profit from the downstream effects of these war crimes”

William

Why do the need to launch more missiles? They don’t need massive barrages to fuck up OR keep the world economy fucked up

John Waaben

That’s every picture of him!

Ian H

D) not bullshit, and the wily Khamenei invited all the traitors to his last supper (tongue in cheek)

Alvaro

These episodes are so necessary.

Ander Pierce

A $ made profiting off of US arrogance and presidential lies isn't any more dirty than any other $. If the capitalist class wants to sell oil cheap because they are buying Trump's BS, I have 0 moral qualms about styling on them.

Zachary Porter

In retrospect, this war being so obvious that it would end badly is exactly why Trump was inevitably going to try it. He truly believes that he can everything others can't, he believes he is unstoppable, he thinks he is him.

T

Oil price, speculation, traders, treasury intervention. It’s all meaningless. Only actual physical supply matters. Oil is the blood of the global economic body. If your body suffers blood loss your organs start shutting down. The 2008 financial collapse was a result of the tightening of oil supply in the mid 2000’s. The 2019 repo market spike was a result of the Houthi drone strike on Saudi refining capability. The only thing that saved the world from an oil shock in 2020 was covid killing oil demand. Supply. Oil supply. This is going to wreak absolute havoc on the global economy.

a clash of purple

Curious what the Lord-Admiral thinks he means by that. USrael is the aggressor here. All the Iranians have to do is not unconditionally surrender. USrael are the ones who have strategic goals they're aiming to complete. I guess those goals would be regime change (impossible) and destroying Iran's missile stockpiles (also impossible)? Like, the balance of power is quite one-sided here, but the strategic balance is a joke. We can't conquer Venezuela or Cuba, let alone Iran. Even if the population didn't actively resist at all, we don't have enough troops for an occupation and we can't mobilize a population who is profoundly apathetic and has no interest in prosecuting these wars of choice. This is really just dropping a bunch of bombs for no reason.

a clash of purple

There are no clean hands in capitalism, William. What is Radio War Nerd's Patreon if not profiting from the downstream effects of these war crimes? We're all part of the same hippopocrasy.

a clash of purple

I got it, William. 👍 But also, if your anti-missile defense system radar got blown up by a missile attack, then I would have some serious doubts about its effectiveness.

a clash of purple

Never forget Charlie's gums. Taken from us too soon.

a clash of purple

Is it? People say things like this, but the global economy keeps chugging along. If anything, it gets more and more capitalistic with every economic downturn, because capital is able to accumulate upwards and more and more people can be immiserated and then amputated from the system. There are political shockwaves, but it's always safely absorbed and redirected towards immigrants and Jews or whatever. I'll believe the global economy has suffered some serious damage when people start eating the rich and building an alternative. Otherwise, it's just crisis capitalism doing its thing.

tam

Thanks for another informative show. Am most people here probably know, you can trace a lot of the anomosity that lead to this war between US and Iran back to the 1979 Iranian Hostage Crisis. There's an essay about the ill-fated hostage rescue attempt, Operation Eagle Claw in the 2008 War-Nerd book (can't find it online) with a description that's been on my mind a lot recently, because it seems almost eerily relevant to Trump's current shit-show "With some plans, you can find the flaw and say 'Aha! There's the problem!' But this plan was so hopeless, so complicated, with so many impossible stages open to so many obvious disasters, that you can't even isolate a single flaw. It was all flaws and no logic"

Max

My bad. I’m not my usual cheerful self these days it seems.

Max

The only reason twitter is good is that people are reporting things from the opposition. You do not get this in the MSM. At all. Example: If the FM of the country we attacked says something to the whole world, it’s not news. It’s not even presented as propaganda. It’s just not there.

Xander Udo

Thanks for the show guys. Really informative. What I still find very hard to grasp is why did the USA/Trump go ahead with this attack when just about everyone knew that this was very likely going to happen. Isn't it a huge assumption to ascribe this to hubris and delusions of a few a the top? Surely there will have many generals/admirals who would have told DJT that this is madness. Is there really nobody that T listens to?!?

Nicholas Berken

Mark's Hezbollah/mammal analogy was crazy

JoR

Not to defend trump, but how often do our leaders listen to the generals? They were almost all against Iraq II, AFAIK. Trump is definitely heightening this trope, but in recent history, American military elite are relatively cautious and benign. It’s the chicken hawk soldiers who want blood and gore lol

a clash of purple

What it boils down to, I think, is that the American ruling class (I resist the idea of blaming this on Trump; there's an overwhelming bipartisan consensus in favor of war with Iran at the heights of power) wants to do this because Israel told them to do it, and there is no meaningful political pressure to counter the Israelis. It's that simple. And who's going to make the American regime pay a meaningful price? Nobody. Not China, not Russia, not Iran, certainly not American voters. Iran can lash out at the Gulf states and Israel all they want, and it won't stop this. America can always export its suffering elsewhere. That's the privilege of being global hegemon. The Europeans and Arabs will pay dearly for this war, and no one in Washington has any reason to care. In fact they probably enjoy forcing the Europeans, especially, to eat their shit and then beg for more like the loathsome little cucks they are.

Josephus Franks

I don’t know if ETF purchases necessarily do the trick, but if everyone were buying oil futures and pushing up the price, that is probably the best we could legally do to end the war, since voting doesn’t work

etienne

one funny side effect for me is that I've been watching a lot of F1 lately and the Saudi and the Bahrain and Saudi GPs in April are as good as cancelled and the Azerbaijan GP in September, the Quatar GP in late November and the Adu Dhabi GP in December are just like ... it's tough to see those seriously go on 100 000s of people, in the Gulf states, an almost completely foreign western audience flying in ... you can't seriously be having that Trump wanted to tend an invitation to host this in the US, and it seems pretty clear that it's too late for the March ones in terms of logistics. Besides the two temporary street circuits in Miami and Vegas the only permanent track that has the facilities to host F1 is Circuit of the Americas outside Austin, and it appears to be free to replace all of those 3 latter GPs, but it seems more likely that a trio of historical tracks in Europe are going to be tapped rather than a triple header at COTA It's kind of inconsequential in the grand scheme of things but it's definitely my pet side-plot

etienne

I'm always saying this

William

I just thought it was a funny juxtaposition

etienne

cancelling 20% of the season would be great cosmic retribution for F1 being one of the earliest big players to get in bed with the Gulf states

Ander Pierce

Yeah, you're right about that, is a funny (and morbid) juxtaposition

Xander Udo

yeah I've been thinking about that too, politicians listen more to donors than to voters. What does that tell us about how democratic such a system is?!

Tyler Berglund

Great episode, really looking to hearing Cyrus again

Quinn

Not really though. The market and its financial machinizations are incredibly shortsighted and stupid ways to allocate resources, but they are not imaginary, they are the reality of production. "Actual physical supply" is obviously related to the way oil or any other raw material is extracted, extraction requires industrial facilities and logistical infrastructure, and that industrial capacity and logistical infrastructure is built, maintained, & directed through investment which in the existing global economy is dependent on market speculation. Yes it is an insane and irrational way to organize production, but that is still the reality of how things are produced and therefore the reality of "actual physical supply."

William

Didn’t think I’d ever see this neo platonist bullshit here

JoR

For what little it is worth, I apologize for what’s happening to your family and community. One of the things RWN was always on top of is the blind narratives many in the west, including well meaning people, had regarding Syria. Unfortunately everything they warned about in 2015 came to fruition when “the regime” fell. Even today, as you said, it’s just a blind spot for people. And thank you for providing insight on why the Sunnis in Syria potentially tolerate the new governments open obedience to Israel. All they have to do, like in America, is say “no, the minorities are the Zionist agents! Keep killing them”. And like the US, the “base” eats the narrative up

Benke

If Iran war would result in unification of Korea then it's all worth it
