Guest: Ahsan Butt, author & professor

The War Nerd has been wanting to talk about the Kashmir standoff for some time, and thanks to a great subscriber suggestion we found a brilliant scholar on the subject of Kashmir separatism, GMU professor Ahsan Butt, to help untangle a complex situation: local separatism, regional power struggle between India and Pakistan, the wars in Afghanistan & the Pakistan Taleban insurgencies of the past decade...At the top of the show, we discuss the Zimbabwe coup & the Saudi purge...

Ahsan Butt is the author of "Secession and Security: Explaining State Strategy against Separatists" published by Cornell University Press.

In 2024, the migration effects are a disaster but this cultural narrative is I think overemphasized compared to the disasterous economic/geopolitical consequences, at least so far. The horrific regime change / proxy wars & clandestine ops "opened new markets" in West Asia/Africa and the economic effects and political blowback from resulting migration destroyed worker solidarity & support for social democracy in Europe. A massive permanent cherry on top of a successful Gladio for the International Ruling Class, it wiped out any remaining support for the post-war economic consensus. Especially because the subverted pro-EU center-left "greens" & "social democrats" played their part and destroyed the credibility of their namesakes, supporting disasterous regime change wars/ops and letting in the migrants without protecting labor rights or preparing the police/judicial system. In terms of cultural "clash", it's impossible to separate reality from chauvinist and liberal assimilationist propaganda, both molded to serve a neoliberal ruling class, albiet in different ways. I think only a European investigating on the ground for years can answer this question.

From a materialist angle, the Kashmiri indigenous Muslim majority have consistantly been a massively exploited underclass, starting way before partition. The "ruling Hindu" government and class tension didn't come from nowhere. Also the Kashmiri reactionary islamist group support by the ISI and CIA/Mi6 support is not a contradiction. JAMU OTOH had support historically from Cuba, the PLO, etc. Professor Butt's GMU* credentials belie his theory of history *notorious in the DC area as a State Dept/Blob/CIA grooming school.

At the risk of seeming impatient, I'm asking if the RSS feed has been changed again or just not updated, yet.

This may be more of a question for Mr. Zha, but I was wondering how China factors into all of this. I've always been puzzled by the Chinese-Pakistan relationship because they've been close since the Mao era, and as ideological bedfellows Islamist nationalists and Red Guards seem pretty diametrically opposed. China controls part of Kashmir and I assume plays a role in the nuclear balance of power between India and Pakistan, but it all seems so murky.

Enemy of my enemy is my friend. Pakistan is a semi-client state of China. PRC has been happy to play realpolitik to the hilt (hence nuclear and ballistic missile proliferation etc.) whatever it can do to upend the "global order"

Regarding Zimbabwe (formerly Southern Rhodesia - Northern Rhodesia became Zambia), the white minority declared UDI in 1965. the Labour government of the UK imposed sanctions and tried to enforce them. With support from South Africa, Rhodesia tried to "bust" them. At the time, I recall, there was talk of blockading the ports of Mozambique which were being used to carry oil to Rhodesia via a railway which was briefly in the news at the time. At the time, the Portuguese were hanging on to their colonies and fighting a long, insurgency war on several fronts which only ended when the Portuguese dicatator Salazar (much beloved by Telegraph types at the time) died. I think the writing was on the wall then for Rhodesia though the British had periodic talks with them - I recall a meeting took place on a royal navy ship in the Indian Ocean. Apartheid South Africa continued support but Rhodesia finally through in the towel in the 80's. Years ago, I met a man who had, had experience of Rhodesia in the colonial times who was convinced that the Matabele would rise up and oppress all the peaceable Shona in an independent Zimbabwe. While the reverse seems to have been the actual case, the Matabele would have been seen as a threat to the Shona at the time. Finally, I recall that Mugabe was acceptable here until he began to evict white farmers. I got the impression that through their family connections (Telegraph again) in the uk, a great deal of outrage was manufactured and channelled through the UK establishment to the Government. It is still an insult here to compare your political opponents handling of finance to Zimbabwe's.

There's a book by Andrew Small called The China-Pakistan Axis: Asia's New Geopolitics. It probably has its biases and inaccuracies (don't know enough about the topic to really judge) but it's not like there are a ton of alternatives for English-language information about China-Pakistan relations.

I plan to do an episode on my CLASH! podcast on the history of Ladakh (Tibetan Buddhist part of Kashmir) and Sikh invasion of Tibet (1841-1842, concurrent with Opium War). That will explain the beginning of entanglement. Will have to touch on Gulab Singh, the founder of Dogra dynasty and first Maharaja of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, who also happen to the main culprit who betrayed the Sikh empire to the British. Anglo-Russian rivalry in the Great Game and Collapse of Qing power in Central Asia due to Muslim Revolts of 1862-1877. Down to the Reassertion of Chinese Power in the modern time.

I would really like to hear some type of analysis from you guys on the current mass immigration of Africans and Middle Easterns to Europe. What do you think will be the consequences? Do you agree with the far right that this will bring chaos to Europe and that it would become Islamic / end of western civilization in the continent? Do you agree with the left an expect this to be a huge boost to Europe and its declining birth rates, that this people will be able to happily assimilate to European culture and would actually be able to carry on with the success of the western civilization so far? Theres so much disinformation out there about this, your input would be really helpful to better understand this topic. Thanks in advance
