Guest: Joshua CrazeRecorded: April 24, 2026

Sudan researcher/journalist Joshua Craze returns to RWN for the grim 3rd year anniversary of the war. He describes the increasingly fractal and messy nature of the war, its shifting alliances within and outside of Sudan, the genocidal massacres in El Fashir, and the dim prospects for an end to the ever-widening war.

Glossary:

-RSF (Rapid Support Forces): led by Hemedti, originally set up by ousted Sudanese leader Omar Bashir as a paramilitary/death squad in Darfur. Today backed by UAE via UAE allies in CAR (Central African Republic), Ethiopia, Chad, eastern Libya's breakaway leader Khalifa Haftar, elements of Russia's Wagner Group/Africa Corps.

-SAF (Sudan Armed Forces): state military modeled on Egyptian military, led by Gen. al-Burhan (Abdel Fattah al al-Burhan), in uneasy alliance with Islamists. SAF backed by Egypt, Iran, Saudis, Turkey, Qatar, Russia. Training in Eritrea.

I’ve listened to this twice and I still haven’t got a clue what’s going on. No shade on the guest or hosts but this shit is too complex for me to understand via podcast. All the abbreviations and place names and factions… it’s a lot.

Kinda sums up what western imperialism has done to Africa.

Same, I'm gonna try to listen to some of the previous Sudan episodes and then give this another shot

The broad strokes arent that complicated as far as civil wars go. They just didnt reiterate what was covered in the previous Sudan war episodes, so youre missing context but it's not THAT convoluted: Dictator cultivates 2 branches of the military to split their influence and have them compete with eachother for power instead of with him. He dies, authentic civilian democratic movement tries to fill the void, instead 2 militaries tear apart the country fighting over what they think of as the opportunity for their rightful inheritance. The rest is mostly the array of forces in terms of geographic & demographic factors, foreign support from competing gulf states, etc.

Quinn

Alright idk what to tell you then. Im not saying its simple but then what is the confusion around acronyms? RSF, SAF, UAE? Wasnt trying to pretend at some expertise in this was just trying to summarize assuming the confusion was getting the episode out of context

William

Fuck… goddamn. The description of the videos.
