Guest: TheseLongWars, Karachi-based blogger

Recorded July 29, 2018

Pakistan has been at the center of a lot of wars and political intrigues over the past few decades. Last week, Pakistan held elections that resulted in a victory of a cricket star and "right-wing populist" — Imran Khan — who defeated the two main parties with backing from the real power, the Pakistan Army. But it's a lot more complicated than any of that—and lucky for The War Nerd, we have Karachi-based blogger and fellow politics nerd TheseLongWars to help guide us through the gory morass of Pakistan politics over the past few decades...

At 1:22:00 the War Nerd and Ames look at current war news—Islamic State's savage attack on Druze villagers in Sweida & Syrian "rebel" sectarianism; Syrian Kurds opening talks with Assad government, as Afrin province descends into chaos; White Helmets evacuation mystery; Islamist insurgency growing in Mozambique's oil-rich northeast... We also answer a couple of RWN subscriber comments of the grumbling sort.

Please for the love of fucking god can you have on Paul Jay from the Real News Network to talk about the possibility that Trump and Putin secretly talked about US invading Iran and Russia staying out like in Libya?

Daniel

Incidentally: according to John Gunthar Dean, then ambassador to India, Zia ul-Haq was assassinated by Israel. Dean was removed from his post and declared mentally unfit by the State Department after making that claim. He also accused Israel of a assassination attempt against himself, which we now know to be true: he was attacked by The Front For The Liberation of Lebanon From Foreigners, an Israeli proxy organization.

This was great. We need to bring TLW back onto the show at least a couple times. An analysis of the various Indo-Pakistani wars would also be interesting, though that might not be his forte.

great episode. so much to cover. also, please ignore silly audience questions. a waste of time for everyone else.

A reminder that Michael Ignatieff is Canadian, the perfect example of a liberal Canadian.

Did you see Juan Cole interviewed by Thom Hartmann a couple of days ago? I fear this war is likely starting sooner than later.

Gengeros

Yes. I expect this war to start either the end of 2018 or 2019. It will be a total fucking bloodbath.

So it makes sense what he said about the ISI guy encouraging IK and the early PTI information. But what confuses me is IK’s opposition to military operations and the wars Pakistan has been involved in. Why would the military continue to support him? Is it just rhetoric or was there internal opposition among ranking military to those operations as well?

Tariq

And Nawaz was definitely corrupt but that’s the way it seems to go in Pakistan.

Regarding the transfer of the White Helmets: The Globe and Mail ran a story about it, and praises "Canada’s woman in Istanbul" for a daring rescue of the the White Helmets. The Globe and Mail reports "Of the more than 800 people approved for rescue (and resettlement in Canada, Britain and Germany), only 422 made the journey to Israel and on to Jordan over the weekend: 98 rescue workers and their families, including one baby who was born during the dramatic flight." However, Reuters has a story which says that many White Helmets were rejected for transfer. It seems Canada or other countries decided not to relocated them even after they applied. Quoting a young member of the WH, “They told us at midnight that the names had come. We were surprised how many names had not been approved,” said Ayed. Only two of the people working at his rescue center were on the list. [. . .] other White Helmets, including Ayed, were never cleared for evacuation. “We sent these lists...and some names were refused and some names were accepted,” said Ammar al-Selmo, a White Helmet working at the group’s headquarters in Turkey." I'm curious both to see if anyone follows up with this story, and to know what the real reasons were for rejecting these people. Thanks for bringing this story to your listeners' attention! (This is my first comment here. I'm a new listener. Looking forward to more episodes and checking out the archives. All the Best,)

Great episode! I always loved Imran Khan as a cricketer when I was a kid - probably the perfect “all-rounder” - a crushing batsman and cunning bowler - and a very shrewd tactician. For me an explanation of how he went from cricketing god to manipulative populist politician was really fascinating. More from TLW please!

ahaha amazing. I remember TLW when he called in during the nsfwcorp days

The map is pro-India - Pakistani Kashmir is completely omitted. There're clear Pashtun and Muhajir stereotypes, but nobody talks about Sindhis - why? Have Muhajirs been ousted from the elite/running Karachi? Those who haven't yet, check out TLW's article on Abdul Sattar Edhi: http://theselongwars.blogspot.com/2016/07/titans-fall-rest-in-peace-abdul-sattar.html . Speaking of Aditya Velivelli, how about bringing him back to explain how India was before and during Muslim domination? The US has nothing to gain from blowing up Iran (as said, the oil flows right now) - but Israel does, which is the whole point. Turin? Hope Operation Make Annibale and Andrea Signorelli Start a Podcast is a go!
