Guest: Annibale, Italian war nerd

Recorded: December 11, 2019

In this episode, the War Nerd & Ames catch up on some recent war news — funny reporting on Libya in the New York Times & the "Afghanistan Papers" in the WaPo . . .

At 48:30 we're joined by Annibale for Part 3 of our series on the Republic of Venice (here is Part 1 and Part 2). In this episode, Annibale tells us how, after suffering defeats to the Ottoman Empire, Venice managed to unite nearly all western European powers against it: the War of the League of Cambrai in the early 16th-c.

Oh, how I sympathise with Mark’s “I shouldn’t have been allowed to see that movie” episodes. For some ungodly reason, my parents allowed me to watch Alien when I was something like 5 or 6. That led to a happy couple of years of nightmares. I still can’t think of facehuggers without shuddering.

That must be a first - the guest calling time on the proceedings! I've read somewhere that there was a guy called Sforza in the post-war Italian govenrment. Was he by any chance a member of the same family? Also, regarding the Ghetto, in the Judge Dee book, Murder in Canton (the last in the series I believe) Dee is worried about controlling the newly arrived Arab population in Tang dynasty Guandong and his proposed solution is to wall them into their own district and imposing a curfew. So its not a new idea. good episode, as ever.

Ames, we have a similar situation with our infant having trouble sleeping. If you are interested, my wife has had a lot of help from this Russian "baby sleep consultant" https://www.sonvdetstve.ru/
