Guests: Annibale + The Fakir

Recorded: March 30, 2020

Intro: The War Nerd & Ames compare west coast vs. east coast airbnb misery in mid-pandemic...

At 12:30 - Annibale joins us from northern Italy for his 3rd installment from the deadliest pandemic zone in the world. The news is not good—deaths vastly underreported based on total mortality reports, still many unknowns, although the rate of infection is finally slowing some...

At 51:00 - We're joined by The Fakir for part 2 of the incredible story of the Maratha Empire. In Part 1 (EP #220) we learned about the early rise of the Maratha Empire up through the mid-late 17th century, and some of the amazing characters led by Shivaji. In this installment, the the Maratha nation nearly vanishes in the early-18th century, then rapidly expands and conquers nearly all of India proper, before slowly deteriorating in a series of civil wars and wars with the ascendant British Empire...

Regarding Italians following the rules, in his book Italian Ways Tim Parks recounts that he was once on a train from Milan to his home in Verona and he got into conversation with a passenger without a ticket. She told him not to worry in case of an inspection. He asked her why not worry and she replied that they (the railway authorities) were not serious about it. However, those on the bus were serious (they would stop the bus and not let anyone off until all the passengers were checked) and it was a big deal to get caught without a ticket.

Welcome to Mass, Mark. I have been a fan and reader since the Exile. Sanity and social distancing appear to be a lot better here in Boston, but it's probably a bit late for that now. Hang in there, guys.

Another excellent appearance from the Fakhir! Hope to see him back on at some point.

The economic consequences of COVID-19 are one thing, but what about the political consequences? Like the sick and morbid social experiment going on across the so-called global south, where countries which are in absolutely no shape for a lockdown are being locked down by their respective governments. After all, SE-Asia, the Indian subcontinent, Africa and Latin America combined does make up a majority of the world’s population, so it seems like a topic worth discussing.

Mark Ames

Thanks, stay safe!

There are so many countries, like Thailand, which are hard to classify in this way. Bangkok might be able to quarantine, but the rest of the country probably not. So it could be also a city/country divide.

It's really cool to do a Google Street View through the Gingee Fort - you can start here at the Crossroads and go 4 different ways. I found the Venkatramana Temple to be really interesting: https://goo.gl/maps/1HP9WRywWqEZeZTy7

Extra points if you find the old cannon

Yeah, I suppose it’s too difficult to know for sure which countries/cities/regions can be quarantined and which ones can’t. There is also the question about time; maybe you can successfully quarantine an area for 21 days, but every time you slap another couple of weeks on top of that, tension, anger and mistrust are going to increase (in the west we take it for granted that quarantines may be extended, I don’t think that is so obvious to people with limited access to accurate information). I want to make it clear that I’m not trying to downplay the tragedy of millions of people dying from COVID-19. But rather, I’m trying to point out the idiocy of starving, harassing and depriving people of their livelihood, only to have millions of people die from COVID-19 anyway. Acting like that creates a real possibility of bloodbath, civil war and various other side effects which will haunt the living for decades to come. Most importantly, I want some debate on how hopelessly and systematically underprepared all these countries are, because what I see now is WHO et al. pretending like everyone have the tools to fight this pandemic so that individual policy makers will end up with the blame for an inevitable catastrophe, while the neo-liberal world order goes free and no one learns anything, as usual.

Too bad Mark is upstate during the end of the world. He's right by Oriskany, Stanwix, the old raiding paths of Joseph Brant and Palmyra where Mormonism was founded (I went once and it was delightfully weird)!

https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/oureconomy/why-coronavirus-could-spark-capitalist-supernova/ And as expected any meaningful external aid to finance this is extremely unlikely. "On March 24, the United Nations issued an appeal for $2bn to fight the coronavirus pandemic in Africa, Asia and Latin America. This money, which the U.N. hopes to raise over the next nine months, is 1/80 of the annual budget of the U.K.’s NHS, and less than 1/2000 of the $4.5tr they plan to spend keeping their own capitalist economies alive. It is also less than 1/40 of the money which imperialist investors have taken out of ‘emerging markets’ during the first three weeks of March, “the largest capital outflow ever recorded,” according to IMF managing director Kristalina Georgieva. The maximum extent of relief for the collateral effects of the coronavirus epidemic on the peoples of poor countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America was indicated by World Bank president, David Malpass, who said after the G20 summit ended that his board is putting together a rescue package valued at “up to $160 billion” spread out over the next 15 months "

I'm a bit late to catching up on the backlog but I really think all the Annibale stuff should be public reposts every time he's on. His information is priceless.
