Guest: Matthew Randazzo, author & political strategist

Recorded: July 10, 2020

We talk to crime author and political advisor Matthew Randazzo V about last month's near-lynching of a multiracial family in remote northwest Washington state, sparked by social media-fueled hysteria about an antifa invasion force — and all the social & political forces fueling tinderboxes like Forks, WA...

First, the Nerd and Ames discuss Belfast, Europeans' non-apologies to colonial victims, the Sivas massacre...

At 27:48: Our interview with Matthew Randazzo begins...

Relistening to this because I was recounting the story to my gf and was hazy on some details. Still an absolutely bonkers story and incredible RWN episode! Pretty timely coincidence with that "missionary girls sent to Arab nations" line and today's episode! Would love to have Matthew on again someday for some sort of followup in a fucked up world 4 years later

Happy birthday John!!

The Irish Story

There is absolutely not a difference between accents in N Ireland between Catholics and Protestants. However, there is a big difference in accents between the north and south of Ireland. But to be honest, the clued in person will very quickly suss out which 'tradition' someone in the North comes from. E.g. do they say Derry or Londonderry, 'Northern Ireland' or the 'north of Ireland', or the 6 counties and so on and so on. Do they follow Gaelic football or rugby, or if association football, do they support the Northern Ireland team or the Republic? The small clues are legion.

Ander Pierce

Incredible episode, I had never heard of Mr. Randazzo V, and he seems like a very cool and extremely interesting guy! Thanks for the interview

Steff

Another really good guest and great discussion, I will be following Mr. Randazzo's work!

Adam Karkowski

This was a timely episode. Can I suggest making this one public? It's topical and I would like to share it around.

Son of Samsung

Yeah I also want to share this. This one was really good

Ciaran O'Connor

The only way accents might clue you in to Catholic/Protestant background is if an area is particularly linked to one. As John Dorney says, there are other markers. I went to an "integrated school" (one that makes an explicit effort to be 50:50 Catholic/Protestant) in Northern Ireland - something like 7% of pupils go to these now. This confused bigots as your school uniform didn't make your sect clear - "are you a Catholic or a Protestant?" "I'm an atheist" "Yeah, but are you a Catholic or a Protestant atheist?"

Robert Rowe

Yes. This needs to be made widely available. And doing so would also probably result in more people joining in to support this channel on patreon.

Kevin Walsh

Martin Dillon wrote in The Shankill Butchers that Lenny Murphy and his crew were able to pick out their victims because of the sectarian geography of Belfast - they could tell whether someone was a Catholic or a Protestant by the side of the street they walked on.

Jeremy Brett

I'm from the Republic but met a guy when I was in uni who was doing a documentary about punishment beatings in Derry. He was told that gangs would approach potential victims in dark alleyways, pass them a piece of paper with 'H' on it and say 'What's that?' and how you pronounced it was the difference between walking home and going to the emergency ward. A Protestant would aspirate the H, but a Catholic would say 'Haitch', like southern Catholics do (like me).

The episodes are getting really big again. The file sizes are just exploding. #229 was almost 170MB. The bitrate went from 80kbit to 128kbit. @Brendon Anderegg: Please use VBR. I've taken a screenshot to illustrate the fattening of the War Nerd: https://i.imgur.com/uXRT3ty.png

MS

@Brendon Anderegg: Please provide the best possible. I don't worry about file size. :)

Freddy K.

Best? That would be scrapping mp3 for good and switching to Opus. Why not offer both? I'd love to have a choice between .mp3 and .opus

*clapping!

Matthew's descriptions of right-wing militia activity reminds me of a video game called Far Cry 5 where you play a cop who fights a little war against a church militia who've taken over a county in Montana. Also, regarding the Purge films, the later sequels explain that the mob violence is incited by Christian fascist politicians and neo-Nazis as an excuse to sell guns and exterminate poor people, and most regular people don't hurt anyone on Purge night. The movies end up endorsing militant leftist revolution against capitalism and white supremacy.

Jackson Holbert

Great episode. I grew up in Stevens County, Washington, and John's description is spot on. When I was in high school out there some guy from Steven's county tried to bomb the MLK day parade in Spokane. Would love to see this one released to the plebes/general population.

teh_drewski

Insane story, made only more insane by the Fed paramilitaries in Portland right now. The US is crazy. Great ep.

xnfec

Listening again to Matthew and his comments on truth in journalism, I was reminded of the Godfather where Michael says it was always his ambition to take the family straight but the more he got into straight business/politics the more crooked things got.

B. Carter

Incredible episode, guys. You gotta make this one public.

Summerfoolboat

I know several people in the Olympic peninsula that need to hear this, including some people connected to case. Please make this public.

Summerfoolboat

Also I believe the wp migration to the nw started in earnest in the 70's as a deliberate attempt by several national wp orgs to form an ethno state, or at least concentrate their powers. Ruby ridge came from this.

Gee Mama

"Khokhol" means "crest", like on a rooster's head, and it's a reference to the "oseledets" or "chub" hairstyle, popular among both the cossacks and the Kievan nobles, and I think even the Polish nobles in their "Sarmatian" phase. The real mystery is how, by the time of Sholokhov, even the cossacks - Don cossacks at least - had thoroughly adopted the slur as a pejorative against non-cossack Ukrainians, while still wearing the same damn hairdo.

Jimothy Realname

Yeah, in the first one the villains are basically college republican psychos. In the most recent one, to paraphrase Matt Christman, the hero is basically a maoist socialist realism figure

nick dee

I have to press a big X to doubt about the 'neo nazi' asking if randazzo is jewish.

Mark Ames

That's a great point about Shokholov-era Cossacks, made me laugh

a clash of purple

Why? It's not really that unbelievable a story. There's plenty of people who ask questions like that when they meet someone. It's only a noteworthy anecdote because of the guy's politics.

Matthew Randazzo V

Lol, it was a well known story among multiple state execs who worked w at time and I could (and likely will) have them corroborate it for fact checking.

Gerard Cronin

Brecher is the King, now and forever.

Years ago I read a autobiographical novel set in the timber industry in Oregon. I enjoyed it and even went to Coos Bay in 1974. It was a nice place. Hearing this is like finding out that the nice man you met all those years ago turned into a spree killer.

James Hardwidge

Really interesting interview. Enjoyed the marin dig, greetings from San Rafael

Theodore Maglio

matthew is my favorite-ever guest. amazing episode! his sense of humor is great, which really helps counteract the incredibly depressing material

Panik

Great episode! I Would love to hear an episode dealing with Native American politics, as suggested by Matthew towards the end of the episode. But Another great angle for a War Nerd episode would be the numerous conflicts between Native American tribes and the Canadian state, such as the Oka crisis and the Gustafsen lake standoff. The subject is both fascinating, inspiring and infuriating. It seems like something that would be right up the war nerds alley. Summary of the Gustafsen Lake stand off in 5 minutes: https://youtu.be/PynWtpqgyJ8

Peter Z

Awesome interview. The Indian Treaty stuff is great. Hope to hear more from this legend.

radiowarnerd

Yeah, we hope to get Matthew back on. He's a natural, as I've said before.

Charles

You can kind of see why they feel the world is against them. Militia men are the villains in movies, in video games, etc. The whole wider culture is aligned against them.
