Guest: Aamer, podcaster & writer

Recorded: February 12, 2021

Bahrain is known to USians as "the home of the US Fifth Fleet". But you may be shocked to learn that there's more to this Persian Gulf island kingdom than floating American coffins. We talk to previous RWN guest Aamer about the history of his homeland, up through Bahrain's gruesome Arab Spring clampdown in 2011.

Check out our series with Aamer on The Arab Conquests: EP #246, #249, #251, #255.

I imagine the aluminium thing is related to cheap energy - if Bahrain has access to relatively cheap energy, particularly gas, it is a strong value add to convert bauxite to aluminium. The primary economic input for aluminium is the energy it takes rather to refine it, rather than the raw ore. There have been quite a few aluminium smelters around the world built to take advantage of cheap energy, only to be economically stranded when the price of electricity rose - despite still having access to cheap bauxite.
