Radio War Nerd covers the world of wars every week, and it's all thanks to our paying subscribers. Most of our shows are now locked for our subscribers only. As a subscriber I think this is a bad idea, and is contrary to the standard Patreon model. I'd much rather fund the war nerd to spread his message as far as it can go, rather than have it only available to those who can pay.

Any chance we get get this synced up with iTunes so that I can listen to it like my other podcasts?

I agree, but locking their podcasts got me to commit to sign up. mind you, reading war nerd articles got me to sign up to NSFW Corp and Pando, and now that he's not posting on Pando anymore I've cancelled my subscription to them. I think they'd do better having an open podcast and encouraging people to support them, then he could have a large audience and even if each average member didn't pay much the total could end up a lot. This way, it's not likely to grow very much because we won't be able to share and promote the podcast cos there's no free material. I just want to be able to listen to radio war nerd on my ipod with all my other podcasts, right now I have to download them and copy across manually, it's a pain :-(

Yeah also worth taking into account that as well as being an incredibly insightful commentator he is a person trying to pay rent. It's really important that we support this kind of journalism if we want there to be more of it.

I think a free for all show every second week was a good modell, if anything it should be more open. No need to make it any more exclusive than that, it doesnt help any cause or income. My experience with Pando is that I actually started reading more of their stuff after they paywalled it and ditched quantity for quality. Thus, I still pay Pando, for Ames' articles among other things, but this is still content accessible for nonsubscribers. Radio war nerd should also be. If I were to make any critisism of the show itself; I occasionally feel you spend too much time repeating yourselves without adding any new content or perspective. Its a fine line to tread, but for example spending 5-10 minutes of a "partons only" show just repeating points from a newsletter is a bit dull and unnecessary (the newsletters are a damn good though). Last, but not at least, I Have to say I enjoyed Ames' random Mr Smithers story from last week.

@Alex If locking down episodes were against the Patreon model, it wouldn't be possible to lock down episodes. @Brynj You say locking down episodes doesn't help income. What's that assumption based on?

Agree. I wouldn't have found the Ward Nerd but for the free articles from Exile and NSFW. You'll earn a lot more money by sharing these for free and growing your patr(e)on base.

Hello Gary Brecher / John Dolan. Locking most episodes is financially unwise because it will decrease the amount of new customers you get. Having a 50/50 split is more wise because then people can check it out and see what you are about. The 50/50 split allows people who are searching for topical new events to find you and have a listen to some but not all new things. So by locking up most episodes you are shrinking you potential growth. I recommend keeping an even 50/50 split of all episodes, or even just locking 2 episodes per month if you do more than 4. It should be an even split between episodes so every other episode is free every other is not, again if you do 5 or more per month then lock only 2. Avoid falling in the trap of only having low quality episodes for free because then new people will listen to those and think you are bad. Also you are making 4500 dollars per episode now which is 9000 a month, that must be enough to cover your expenses and even allow you to move back to New Zealand where your wife knows the system and how things work. Don't let short term greed get in the way of long term GREED! :D You will make more money by having a 2 locked episodes per month and the rest free, instead of what you are doing now with locking most episodes.
