Guest: Gunnar Hrafn Jónsson, journalist

Recorded: July 8, 2021

Wide-ranging discussion with Icelandic journalist Gunnar Hrafn Jónsson, co-author of the recent bombshell story on a key FBI witness in the Julian Assange indictment admitting that he lied to the DOJ. We also discuss Gunnar's other work with WikiLeaks, another recent bombshell story exposing a coverup in the chemical weapons watchdog, the OPCW, which suppressed its own scientists' reports on the alleged WMD attack on Douma, Syria, triggering an aerial bombing campaign by the US, France and Britain.

Central banks across the globe initiated quantitative easing and direct financial stimulus to lessen the brunt of the demand shock from COVID. Hotels, airlines and restaurants got billions in payouts in the states and id imagine the same happened in NZ. NZ just ended their QE program apparently but up until now the tourist industry just learned to live with it

wavesounds

damn higgins is such a pos, nothing else to add

“We are Bellingcat, an intelligence agency for the intelligence agencies”

it’s gotta be rough for tourism dependent nations, I don’t know how they’re making it and I feel like they’re gonna have to open up eventually… but then again what do I know

Alex Muir

Ref Gary's question re tourism early on, I've read that half of Fiji's labour force was unemployed by July last year because of the collapse of tourism. But Fiji does have other industries: sugar, forestry, fishing & a gold mine (not sure if that's still operating). Plus agriculture (commercial and subsistence). There was some hope that Fiji would be able to become part of a South Pacific "bubble", along with NZ, Oz & the Cook Islands, but a Covid outbreak starting in April in Fiji is now out of control, so that won't be happening. In NZ, tourism was supposed to be our "biggest industry" (yeah, right). So predictions were that it would collapse & unemployment would reach 9-10%; but it turns out that receipts from foreigners coming to NZ were about the same as spending by NZers going overseas. Now that we can't go overseas, we're spending our foreign travel budgets at home, so tourism hasn't been hit quite as hard as expected... Ref booking a room in MIQ, yes, very difficult, but apparently the tech-savvier are using scripts to do the job of looking for rooms for them; they are findable on the net.

I just can't get over the hypocrisy of "the West" pointing the finger at countries such as China over human rights while locking up journalists and whistle blowers like Assange and conducting torture among many other violations by our own standards. Our leaders and media are masters of distraction and obfuscation. It's truly Orwellian. Xi Jinping is jealous at how well Western nations can manufacture consent.

David Andrews

Many hotels in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia will go bankrupt. No bailouts for them.

Jeffery Hepstein

Guys Assange was never ever charged in Sweden. There was a European arrest warrant issued for his questioning. That’s it.

Gengeros

Us government is pure fucking evil. Pure fucking evil.

Still listening to the episode, wanted to briefly comment on Australia and the pandemic response. There absolutely *is* a series of culture wars, between the federal government and state governments, between state governments, between what passes for red and blue voters, etc. The feds (who are hard right Christian fundamentalists) never wanted any state to go into lockdown, were always pushing economy, economy, economy. Various states have gone into multiple lockdowns regardless, the longest one being in Victoria which ran for months. The Feds were pressured into enacting support payments for workers unable to work and doubling welfare payments for the unemployed. These payments were very successful but the Feds shut them down as soon as they possibly could. There have been rhetorical wars between states, blaming each other (to varying degrees of accuracy) for allowing the virus to slip over borders. There have been protests, arrests, no deaths that I'm aware of. Boomers looting toilet paper and causing a national shortage became a thing for a while. The feds have blatantly favoured states owned by their faction, have not even bothered to hide it. They have utterly fucked the vaccine rollout, have utterly fucked the quarantine systems. They are ceding more and more power to the states by default as state premiers are becoming more popular for defying federal rhetoric. Right wing shock jocks have done their part, fringe redneck fuckwit politicians have spread multiple vaccine and covid conspiracy theories on Facebook and elsewhere. There is a sizable percentage of the population that are not going to get vaccinated, I have no idea what the figure is. We're locked into a cycle of endless lockdowns (in Victoria) to try and keep shit under wraps long enough for everyone to be vaccinated. Other states are half-assing their lockdowns (not going to pretend to be objective on this) and so outbreaks keep re-occurring. The vaccines are not coming anytime soon in enough quantities. Stories are breaking about companies having offered early supply last year and being rebuffed. It took diplomacy from a previous PM to maybe get things almost kind of back on track. We are all yelling at each other a lot and the only people having a good time are the billionaires and corporations who looted the government for welfare payments.

Chris H

Fellow Aussie here. Good analysis. I cannot understand why the feds seem so resistant to funding the construction of dedicated quarantine facilities, at least for international arrivals. It should play into their rhetoric of being the ones who will "protect our borders".

Sweden has been an integral part of NATO all the time. Infrastructure, e.g., roads and the cutting of trees along the roads are dimensioned as to making sure they are broad enough for NATO aircraft to land. The ambassadors in different countries are hanging around with USAID. I know because I shared a cab with the Swedish ambassador and a local representative of USAID. They implemented a landwide surveillance program on all mobile and electronic traffic in&out of Sweden as well as an anti-piracy (download movies) on the direct orders from the USA. US also threatened with tradewar if they didn't. As shown by wikileaks the local boulevard press tool orders from the Clinton campaign about what to write about the campaign. Also after Olof Palme was shot, the Swedes has lost all geoeconomical integrity and signed up on Washington Consensus privatizing just about everything and not keeping any records of what public property was sold. The schools in Sweden are privatized to the point where anybody can start a school and run it for profit, with the outcome that tax payers are financing both islamic extremists that are forwarding tax money to jihadists as well and money grabbers that extravt all money and then bankrupting a chain of schools leaving 15000 pupils without a school. The Swedish police is now executing children with Down's syndrome. The police does absolutely zero to protect citizens from clan criminals until when a policeman was shot. Then all of a sudden they could easily arrest 150 of the known clan criminals. It is a neoliberal hell!

It would be neat to cross reference the QE and housing prices.

As an American, it's all music to my ears. Amazing how frontier settler colonial cultures can be so similar.

Plenty of my liberal friends love to gush about how free and humane the United States and our allies are, and how evil and repressive those awful North Koreans and Chinese are. I had someone say to me unironically that the fact that late night talk show hosts mock the government in the United States means that it's an incredibly free country... it's just astonishing.

Thomas Sankara

Housing prices up 25% year over year now. Lots of sellers only accepting cash offers and offers on average 50K above asking price. You can hate the Fed but conditions for a Maoist insurgency are only improving :) dollar demise is next

mt

Anyway I think that the liberation of Assange is really one of the most important issues right now because now with the freedom of press being flushed down the toilet by the journalist wankers that don't defend Assange against the powers. It is really embarrassing to see. Don't remember who said it but nowadays "journalists are dining with the very people they should dining on".

mt

So thanks for this episode! Also it is really amazing how many pedophiles are popping up through the US letter soup. Epstein and all his clients incl Tony Blair etc. and now this dude.

Ross Kiro-Ward

Hi guys! Love the new episode (as always) and although I don’t want to ruin anyone’s day I have a link that shows one of the soldiers describing what he saw at the AH-64 attack (he is the one who found and picked up the little girl from the van) which was discussed early in the show. It is extremely vivid and could be disturbing to a lot of people — just a heads up. Unfortunately both children did die and left this particular soldier with obvious psychological trauma. https://youtu.be/kelmEZe8whI

Henry Nichols

Really interested to know more about the Wikileaks evidence that Saudi Arabia provides 80% of Al Qaeda’s funding. Anyone have any links?

Freddy K.

Please offer the shows in the Opus format. A 64kbit opus runs circles around outdated bloated 128kbit CBR mp3. At this point, you tech is like an Armenian T-72 facing drones: not looking good. Ceterum censeo Opus esse addendum.

Should at least have a CAPTCHA (human proof) to stop bots and maybe even have a lottery. Home quarantine for returning vaccinated travellers should also be available

Peter Z

There are vulnerable populations across the pacific nations and limited health facilities. Plus limited vaccines available. Domestic travel bubbles can still be moderately profitable. Unemployment genrerally also down due to less foreign workers available.

Mark Ames

You're right, thanks for pointing that out. Will make sure to correct the record next ep.

@31:00 Mark when did Luke Harding plagiarize you? I would love to get plagiarized I haven't even gotten that far in my writing career lol

a clash of purple

I have difficulty imagining a Maoist insurgency in the United States.

online Leftist Archive Project (LARP)

ugh! The world of political and opinion writing SUCKS! I wrote this whole thing on Lab Leak that was really good, nobody wants it. Been trying to get my writing out there for years but no dice. Guess you need to either know someone or have gone to the right school.

Not to wonder since at least some of the old money billionaires like Bonniers, H&M-Persson etc have their fortunes - mainly shares - tied to a foundation and lo and behold the foundation does not pay taxes on interest, dividends or capital gains from selling shares or real estate. Nice if you can have it!

Animals in Motion

The Swedish communist party leader, CH Hermansson, in Swedish political circles at least a famous intellectual - and somewhat contested figure - coined the phrase "the fifteen families" in his excellent books about monopoly capital and finance. These fifteen families (Wallenberg, Söderberg, Wehtje, Johnson, Bonnier, Kempe, Klingspor, Jeansson, Dunker, Broström, Schwartz, Hammarskiöld, Jacobsson, Åselius and Throne-Holst) essentially still control most wealth in Sweden, although internationalization of the Swedish economy has taken its toll since the 80's (not on their wealth mind you, just their relative power).

Jim Vail

Journalism, like all institutions in class society, in the end serve the interests of one class or another, whatever claims to "independence" they make. A revolutionary press honestly says this; the media that serves the ruling class has to hide this, since they serve an exploiting minority. Journalism is too central and important an institution to be allowed to wander very far. The "exposures" serve the interests of one section of the ruling class or another. There may be a few "independent" writers out there, but they are only allowed a short leash as long as they don't influence many people. It's like democracy overall. Democracy for the ruling class (and not even for them at all points) and dictatorship over the people and any revolutionary movements anywhere.

Dorst Savijeski

Literally is probably a few 20-30 year olds following Azerbaijan Vs Armenia, then the episode before. Hmm we can use this. Fucktards team insecurity

Makes me think of Sy Hersh getting sequestered to the London Review of Books. No corporate neoliberal mouthpieces will touch him, let alone follow up on his stories.
