Guests: Boris Mamëz & Rey Katula, co-hosts The Empire Never Ended

Recorded: December 17, 2021

Part 2 in our series on the Serbian Red Berets, with hosts from the podcast The Empire Never Ended. This episode, we begin with the end of the Bosnia war in 1996, when the Red Berets transform from a secretive Serbian state paramilitary/death squad into an official elite special forces branch, the Unit for Special Operations of the State Security of Serbia (JSO)...but it doesn't take long for old habits to return with a vengeance, culminating in the assassination of Serbia's prime minister, Zoran Djindjic.

More diacritics in this episode than all the rest combined

Did y'all ever do an episode on Yugoslavian partisans during WW2? From what I understand by the end they were essentially a standing army with even a small aircore of captured bf 109s and some lend lease aircraft. Also this series is awesome

Dario Senkic

They did an episode about the Yugoslav wars during the 90's, but not about the Yugoslav partisans during WW2 AFAIK. It would be really appreciated though if they did an episode or two about one of the largest guerrilla movements in history.

Loved this episode and especially the Civil War series; thank you for making it. Also I didn't recieve the newsletter responding to AmCon; any chance you could send that to me, alongside any other newsletters you've written about the Civil War and Reconstruction? I've got the bug and I can't wait until the next episode comes out.

This was unexpectedly wild and by the end you even as professional hosts couldn't help breaking down and repeating the refrain I'd been asking since the start: How the hell is this not a mobster movie? Or, more like 2 1/2 of them. Thank you to Boris and Rey!

Hi Ialo, Did you check your spam folder? The newsletters have a bad habit of ending up there. Send me your email address at radiowarnerd@gmail.com and I'll throw some old cw newsletters your way

Just checked it and yes, it was there. Thank you!

Even the assasination of Arkan could become a movie. The guy is infamous. I initially missed the sentence where you said that Arkan was assassinated and thought I had missed a part of the podcast. But it's more that so much material was in this episode, that it was only mentioned briefly. (Around 00:53:00) Great episodes on a dark era in Europe.
