FARC & Colombia

With FARC-Colombia ceasefire ending half a century of brutal war, the War Nerd walks us back through Colombia's ruling class bloodbaths in 1899-1902 and La Violence 50 years later, before the FARC appeared — and tries making sense of this little understood and remarkably successful Marxist peasant guerrilla movement, which outlasted them all in the roughest neighborhood in Latin America. . . . Plus: a brief look at the latest Syria ceasefire. . . .

What's the song title & artist at the end?

Even us Libertarians think Gary Johnson is fucking Insane. He seems to think that Libertarianism is taking the "good stuff" from both the Republicans and the Democrats, that's literally the opposite of Libertarianism. The ideological basis of being a Lib-tard is the non-aggression principle Gary don't seem to understand that at all.

I didn't even notice an audio difference — for spoken audio all you need is 32kbps as long as u have around 22.05kHz.

And... "war is too important a matter to be left to the generals" ... So here comes marketing!!! And Christmas, too!!! http://www.wired.co.uk/article/how-i-tamed-guerrillas-with-guerrilla-marketing —— of course there's a TED talk https://youtu.be/0Fi83BHQsMA —— and a This American Life http://m.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/575/poetry-of-propaganda?act=1#act-1 propaganda is an essential aspect of warfare, but it's ludicrous to act like it's the only aspect of warfare worth talking about in polite, liberal circles.

The audio is 64kbps/44.1kHz — that's far higher than what you'll get in an audiobook or on the radio. I'm a musician and I have a hi-fi, too. Anything higher than that is wasted

Damn, hearing more about Colombia makes me very glad I'm a labour organiser in safe old Canada. The worst I have to fear is losing my job, not my life!

Another great episode, but I really need Marks Ames to show me on the doll where Libertarians hurt him. He is obsessed with misconstruing our philosophy.

Matt Nichols

Oh boy, I can tell from the title that is going to be nauseating. This may be news to Mark (and others) but the Koch Brothers are not the Emperors of Libertarianism, and many of their views are completely out of line with Libertarian philosophy. They screwed over "Mr Libertarian", Murray Rothbard, famously, and you'll be hard pressed to find Cato or Reason even acknowledge his existence.

Lo

I think Mark Ames' antipathy toward libertarianism is similar to the sentiment behind this tweet from @crushingbort: "hmm well I'd say I'm fiscally conservative but socially very liberal. the problems are bad but their causes...their causes are very good"

I love how libertarians always claim that when their market solutions fail it's not real libertarianism. They sound like Trotskyites but have far too much influence in my state. Look at Wisconsin right now. Libertarianism is much like laissez-faire economics in the 19th century it's just a pithy rationalization for exploitation.

Matt Nichols

I love how people claim the free market has failed when it hasn't been tried. Some jerk in Wisconsin implements some half hearted Conservative privatization (also known as Fascism) and the Left goes "See the free market failed." Um no, it hasn't been tried. The free market looks a lot like Uber and AirBnB and less like "private" monopoly prisons.

Karl Knight

Please give me the info on that last track before the outro. It was so soothing to my ears.

Fabian Destouches

Austin Petersen is a nut too and probably would gotten no media attention at all as a LP candidate, but at least he understood the basics of what libertarianism is supposed to be about (whether you agree with it or not).

Matt Nichols

No my definitions fall in line with what Mises and Rothbard wrote on, and those two are the authoritative sources on what defines Libertarianism and the free market. Gary Johnson is a terrible model to follow in this regard. Put simply, Libertarianism is the non initiation of force and the free market is an economy with the absence of centralized planning and control.

The direct link to the download was missing in the e-mail this time :(

Meh. Libertarianism is more than the Austrian school and the NAP. I don't see why the Austrian natural-rights libertarianism of Rothbard should be seen as more authentically libertarian than say the Chicago school consequentialist libertarianism of someone like David Friedman.

This was fantastic. I knew of La Violencia but didn't really know about Gaitan or El Bogotazo--to think that much violence could spring forth that quickly from a single event is astonishing until I think back on some of the other conflicts that have been covered in this forum. Even so, Colombia has a fairly unique and ugly history of internal conflict that deserves scrutiny. The Colombia state has never been particularly strong, but its party system and actual structures are remarkably resilient in spite of the government's sporadic tendency to complete implosion--are there any specific reasons as to why that is the case?

Factory Troll

I seems your definition of free market and libertarianism differs from the Free market™ and Libertarianism™ defined by far more powerfull people than yourself, sort of like a marxist going on about how the soviet union wasn't communist and real communism has never been tried. Yeah, get it, I'm a follower of "happyism" which doctrine postulates that the world would be such a great place if everyone was happy, and when someone tell me thats not gonna work, I can say "but it has never been tried, all societies you use as examples are full of angry people". Believers in "real" libertarianism, or "real" communism for that matter, should consider the the possibility that a pure version of thier respective ideologies seemingly never existed because it was bound to instantly break down into an unpure verson, like a radioactive atom, or actually never existed because the preconditions you require at best are completly unrealistic, and at worst are contradictory in theory and impossible in practice.

I just backed this podcast but couldn't find a reward level listed for the RSS feed. Anyone know what it is?

Patrick

I've gotten so many great book recommendations (just finished The Red Web!) from you guys but have trouble remembering the titles, especially after listening to a couple episodes in a row/when the author isn't being interviewed. I thought of it because you made a point of listing a couple titles while in other podcasts they are more offhand references. Maybe you could put books you reference in the show description? O maybe include a brief reading list as part of a patron newsletter? Just a thought. Thanks for your shows.

Quite interesting episode, though, for me, it was a bit difficult to digest the "do not hate the FARC" atittude. Probably because I didn't know much about it, or because I assumed that any "not mostly bad" comunist guerilla concept (in latin america) was eliminated from the middle of the '60s by somewhat "efficient" goverments. (Which reminds me an expression my parents told couple of times "the one that is not communist till 18 has no heart, the one that is communist after 18 has no brain", although they used it for other circumstances) NB: Of course I understand the underlaying reasons for the uprising. But still cannot help it to feel somewhat visceral about them.

Paul Simon

I agree, that would be great. Sometimes I listen to the podcast while driving, which makes it hard to take notes.

Paul Simon

@Brynj bingo, very well put.
