FYI, that story about Hannibal at seven was in T. Livius's Ab Urbe Condita. The Carthaginian peace guy in that (I can't remember his name) is just the classic fantasy ideal partner of the imperial power, just a simp for Rome.

T

To the tune of Largo Al Factotum: “haaaaanibal Hannibal Hannibal haaaanibal Hannibal la Hannibal la Hannibal Hannibal Hannibal”

Benke

Back to the classics.

Knosnothing

Is the character John is referring to in A Scanner Darkly Jim Barris?

Jay

Really excited for salammbo!

This never really occurred to me until you guys mentioned the war/anti-war divisions in Carthage, but instead of that boat reverse-engineering narrative, it seems just as plausible that some enterprising Carthaginian noble sold the designs to them, possibly to undermine the more warlike factions. Then, if you’re the Romans, that’s the sort of thing you might want to change later when retelling the story. Reverse-engineering a boat design would also reflect how the Romans saw themselves, who at the time were becoming the engineering powerhouse of the ancient word. That’s all speculation of course, but it’s fun to speculate about.

I’m being transported back in time to my Rome Total War bullshit

Jason Thompson

Yeah, maybe the “enemies of Rome” series would be a good way to do some Roman battles (Tho I still ❤️ Alexander better)

Yes! Sorry about that. Where'd I get Philip Seymour Hoffman?

That that literally made me a War Nerd.

I remember a white supremecist unfurled a a Nazi flag and started shouting slurs at Bernie from the rafters. And the media reported it ambiguously whether or not the flag was in support of Bernie and his platform or a protest against him. Absolutely disgusting.

AJ

Great episode! I missed the antiquity stuff. Looking forward to part 2!

This episode really speaks to the tenuous nature of history, one book being the deciding factor in the narrative
