I'm so glad you guys made this episode freely available to all; I say that as a paying subscriber. Rania Khalek's opinions have sometimes given me pause - I'm not gonna call her wrong, because I lack the knowledge and expertise to make that call - but the efforts to put her out of business are way out of line. The superbly conducted interview here - starts at 5m25s and runs until just before 1h31m, i.e., total run time just over 1h25m - is long, but it really provided an education to me on the complexity of the Syrian situation, while making very clear why Khalek stands where she does. (I think Molly Crabapple has - or at least had - a similar pro-civilian/pro-refugee stance that didn't really offer any solutions, but simply called for people to pay attention as a first step. Molly C. got the same hostility that Khalek is getting now, but at least MC can make a living from her art, an option probably unavailable to journalist Khalek (though I dunno...can you paint, Rania?). Thanks again for liberating this from behind the paywall.

ah

You guys might want to take a closer look at the Syrian Social Nationalist Party. Pretty embarrassing to hear them being defended on here.

Justin Liu

Do you want to make specific what you`re alleging.

ah

They are a hard right group with a paramilitary that supports Assad. The exact same type of groups that Dolan regularly calls Nazis in Ukraine and other parts of the world

Avery

Not quite. They're part of the March 8 Alliance in Lebanon, one of the major coalitions there, and originally allied with a democratic socialist party. They are nationalists in a vague sense but don't aim for violent seizure of Lebanon by Syrian nationals.

ah

Love to equivocate about right wing nationalism.

Gary Brecher and Mark Ames have written about their personal lives several years ago at nsfwcorp.com, exile.ru, and exiledonline.com if you want to look it up. Personally, I like how they focus on larger/historical/serious issues instead of their personal narratives. Every episode has been very insightful for me at least. However, they've also mentioned a few times how they were in alliance with the Right in their younger days. I'd enjoy an episode on how/why they switched sides as they were growing up. As far as I've gleaned from their writings/podcasts, Mark Ames became seriously disillusioned with the right during Reagan's administration and John Dolan had a thing for hippie chicks. Haha. But I doubt that's the whole story and I'd like to hear more about it.

Social Nationalist Take "Social" and "National" and have them change places, and what do you get? Also their symbol is one of those crypto almost-swastika things a lot of far right paries like to use.
