One thing that I have been trying to understand is whether or not the Biden people are actually credulous enough to believe everything that the IDF tells them. My suspicion is that the answer is probably "yes", and I suspect this is one of the reasons that they are going to royally screw this whole situation up even more than it already is. My memory is also a little bit hazy, but could you ever imagine George HW Bush (Bush I) saying publicly that the U.S. was supporting Israel in some military action without any "red lines"? Did this ever happen? Just in terms of imperial management, these Biden/Clinton people absolutely suck. Of course that is a small issue compared to the human suffering. However, I don't think it is possible to separate the administration's one-sided view of the reality of the situation from the suffering. It almost seems like these people spent a couple hours watching snuff videos prepared by the IDF, without also making any attempt to actually understand the violence in the context of more recent events (e.g. the relentless and effectively legalized killing of Palestinians in the West Bank over the past year, or the kind of daily humiliations that have been part of the occupation). The whole situation is just stomach turning. There should have been highly level resignations immediately in both the U.S. and Israeli government over the failures (the U.S. response should have been conditioned on the resignation of the Netanyahu coalition). At this point, just as a matter of personal ethics, I would think more people would want to resign rather than to continue to be associated with this monstrosity.

I feel like there's a lot of similiarities between the Israeli govt and the old confederacy leadership. The same hubris, the same over the top cruelty when challenged reminded of that line from your civil war series with the south complaining that the north were dogs and how dare they lift there hands against "proper gentleman."

Then Adm Kirby under the Obama admin was the same one to defend the AQ affiliates the US was funding in Syria, up to and including when the US AQ group sawed a teenagers head off. Kirby gave one of his typical both sides of his mouth defense. The DoD stopped funding them and then quietly resumed funding them not long after.

William

That fucking crybaby loser Kirby deserves to be put on a manned mission to the center of the sun

William

The UN counts 9-10k Ukrainian civilians killed since feb 2022. Israel has almost killed as many in Gaza in, what, 3 weeks? Fuck off crybaby bitch

Mosul has to been one of the weirdest campaigns in history. US coalition Air Force and mostly Iranian trained shia militias. Idk how we think we can win a regional war when we have so many extremely vulnerable forces in the area. Its also one of the more disgusting things about this war. We're moving additional assets into the area to prevent our 3000 troops in Syria and Iraq from getting overrun in the event that Iran or hezzbollah escalates so that our wonderful ally in Israel can do a genocide. Democrats can fuck off with their fundraising emails and letters.

Amen John, declare a cease fire so RWN can catch up on their coverage.

Jon_dog

Does anyone have a link to that Times story? I've found something similar on The Guardian, but it's more about people hassling BBC reporters than staffers hating the coverage

Add the withdrawal from Afghanistan and the return of the taliban to the recent humiliations of the US Empire

Demented Avenger

A big reason for the decline of support for Israel among Democrats is the Iran nuclear deal. We had Netanyahu showing up in the US and outright opposing the initiative of a Democratic President, functioning as a representative of the Republican Party in all but name. The hyperpartisan nature of current American politics makes Israel opposition territory for Democrats, especially younger ones who hadn’t formed opinions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict before then.

I think John is mistaken about the Merkava having room for troop transport. He is thinking about the Namer which is an IFV w an unmanned canon on top, looks like a tank but the gun is something like 30 or 50mm, it’s not a 100+mm tank cannon.

Matt McCartney

Merkava can carry 6 troops in the rear compartment due to its front mounted engine.

Jaime Christley

Oh come on, guys. A FISH CALLED WANDA is pretty funny.

Blorst of times

Ukrainian deaths vs Palestinian deaths recalls Chomsky’s benign and constructive bloodbaths framework.

Jimothy Realname

Apparently the Merkava proper does have room for troop transport, but it comes with a big caveat. So basically the Merkava has a front engine unlike most tanks. This adds a little more survivability since there's more mass between the crew and the likely direction of incoming fire. It also means there can be a hatch in the back for evacuation, loading, and so-on. Troops can get in and out through it, and there is some space for troops inside, but you can only fit a significant amount by taking out the ammunition - the troops sit where there would ordinarily be ammo storage. Thus, though the Merkava does have the capability to transport 6 soldiers, it also has to be carrying much less ammunition. So it isn't so much for carrying troops into combat as for evacuating troops out of combat. This jibes with the IDF's famous casualty aversion.

Even without Hezbollah intervention, its still unclear if Israel can do the ground invasion. If Hamas spent years planning this, they surely would have spent 90% of that on defensive preparations. Seymour Hersh wrote about Israel not trusting its own infantry, but its further than that I think. I re-read Norm Finkelstein's Gaza: Inquest into its Martyrdom, which shows from sources that during Cast Lead infantry basically encountered no enemy combatants in Gaza, they just blew up anything that moved rather than risk a soldier. The whole thing was just to demonstrate their military power after the failure against Hezbollah in 2006. This is the same pattern, its a humiliated militarist state committing atrocities to re-inflate their paper tiger.

PW

Israel has painted themselves into a corner. Hamas will ensure the IDF takes heavy losses in personnel, perhaps with an assist from Hezbollah. And Hamas can take lots of losses since each loss is a martyr. But with all Bibi's chest thumping the IDF can't retreat now. Although maybe the slightly less brain washed reservists will stage a mutiny. Or like Empire's past they will lose, declare Victory! and pull out. Mission Accomplished, eh Chimpy?

Somebody send me back in time so I can see the look on Past Me's face when I tell him that opposing genocide is antisemitic

David Sorich

Bucha massacre was done by MI6/Ukrainian punative battalions, there's ample evidence for this.

a clash of purple

That's always been the Israeli line. According to them, all Arabs are evil demons who are hellbent on destroying Jews, so cleansing Israel of Arabs through any means necessary is required for the survival of the Jewish race. If you don't unconditionally support the genocide of the Palestinians, then by definition you are anti-semitic. It's the exact same logic as the Nazis and plenty of other evil racist regimes. To justify their atrocities they have to make up an imaginary context that makes them the victims who are only acting in self-defense.

Lewis Richardson

Does anyone have further info/links about the internal BBC news stuff that they mentioned?

Sam Zeng

The world has gotten much more dangerous under Biden. They have been unable resolve the Ukraine/Russian war, they have enabled Israel to take actions that will threaten Israeli security for the decades to come. They are challenging China on security fronts with out any coherent goals or objectives. Trump was a Sleaze and he did do very irresponsible things geopolitically but Biden has proven to be way more dangerous and incoherent.

a clash of purple

Trump tore up the Iran deal, murdered Suleimani, gave Jerusalem to Israel... Like, there's no person who could become POTUS who isn't going to keep making the global situation worse until nuclear apocalypse. I can only hope the rest of the world realizes that, because no one in this country understands or cares.
