I got into wildlife/nature photography to try to capture what’s left and deal with my climate anxiety. I have faith life will continue on in its infinite mysteries after the human race goes extinct….. even if we use nukes against one another. Then it may take a little while longer for things to pick back up. Another great ep.

CR

I saw something yesterday that makes sense and I feel dumb for not realizing it sooner. Democrats warn about Trump being worse on Israel, which is true. However, they also hate him so blindingly that if he did half of what Biden has done, they’d have impeached him twice by now out of spite.

CR

No one working at the NYT wants anyone to know anything factual, or they wouldn’t be working for that rag.

HarshMalarkey

I'm gonna make the leap from my phone camera to something more serious. Any recommendations?

John Waaben

Nikon d3400 and other used entry level DSLRs if you’re new to shooting. A 70mm-300mm zoom lens is good to start out at. The iPhone camera is great for practice on landscapes, bugs, plants, and things that are quite small and/or don’t move much.

etienne

Gary Bretcher said it aeons ago, when politicians start talking about road casualties, the war is going bad

Jess

Multiple people in my circle are dealing with serious/terminal diagnoses and the beginning of this episode was somehow just as depressing... But enlightening? Keep up the good work! Now to the actual wars, I'm sure they're even more of a downer...

William

Who’s that

William

How can Trump be worse on Israel than Biden already is??

etienne

some nerd online

Dark Belden

I may be wrong but Isn’t that what happened with Yemen? Trump just enthusiastically carried on with what Obama was already doing and then it became his war to Democrats and then they started to care?

bonus points for not being first

Speaking of the Times and carrying water for warmongers. What to do now about them reporting that 1) the CIA has built a dozen bases, at least, in Ukraine since Maidan, and 2) many of those bases are for the purpose of targeting offensive missiles at sites in Russia? This not only justifies Russia’s casus belli against Ukraine by proving that it is acting in self defense against an enemy working to put missiles five minutes from right up Moscow’s ass, but it is absolutely causus belli against the U.S. and NATO as well for being the ones actually controlling those missiles. The funny thing is that the whole article admits it exists to pressure Republicans to fund the war, but for the genuinely ideologically motivated ones (as opposed to those just arguing about their cut of the kickbacks), this is a smoking gun and RW anti (Ukraine) war is going batshit that they’ve given up all pretense. It seems like for a few billion dollars the CIA has decided as policy to admit that Maidan and everything since have been done exactly for the reasons Russia has been saying it did: to be able to make war and decapitate Russia whenever D.C. wants.

International law is toothless, but the fact that a reporter liked a tweet cited in the ICJ brief by South Africa does raise an eyebrow. e.g. thinking specifically of United Nations International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Article 20. "Prohibition of propaganda for war and inciting national, racial or religious hatred". I wouldn't think that liking a tweet by itself would be sufficient, but for a person to author a highly inflammatory story that has the potential to incite racial or religious hatred, you would think there would be an effort to be extremely conscientious and accurate in reporting. As bleak and sad as this massacre has been, it would be darkly hilarious if a NY Times reporter ended up facing legal sanction for engaging in inflammatory war propaganda.

Matt McCartney

Don't forget about the French Foreign Legion. They exist solely to be expended in unpopular wars without upsetting the domestic political balance in France. Glorious defeat in pointless battles is their raison d'etre.

William

That is a completely ambiguous and unprovable claim. In fact, Trump demonstrably did MORE diplomacy and did MORE to decrease tensions in the world than Biden has.

Jason Thompson

I haven’t listened to this episode yet, but I just had the worst experiences with pro Israel people on Twitter (of course all Twitter experiences are the worst) and I want to vent to the War Nerd echo chamber (?). In the last 24 hours I encountered: 1. a “British-Palestinian” “peace activist” who at first seemed just sort of both-sidesy with peace doves and “Netanyahu is the problem, not Israel” but all his tweets amount to “Hamas needs to surrender now” and finally he capped it off with a tweet mocking the death of Aaron Bushnell. I assume he’s a paid flack honestly. 2. A Black USAan with a few hundred followers who also mocked Bushnell’s death as “a white person who killed himself for other white people” and went on to talk about how Arabs were responsible for the transatlantic slave trade so Arabs are garbage. 3. A very lefty Jewish USAan who I’d thought was progressive on Palestine, she’d tweeted for a ceasefire a bunch in November-December… also with some stuff “Zionism itself is not bad”… but then I come back to her page and she’s COMPLETELY flipped, tweeting “haha look at this poll showing Americans support Israel,” “antiZionism is code for antisemitism”, and Hamas has to go, and Aaron Bushnell was part of a “death cult.” I can’t believe she went so nuts after months of apparently wringing her hands about Gazan civilian casualties, but there we are.

Jason Thompson

I totally agree. If Trump was in office now there’d probably be twice as many Democrats signing up for a ceasefire (so like… 10% instead of 5%, but still)

Josephus Franks

I'd been thinking the same as John at the beginning of the episode, on facing death during the ecological crisis - just not as an older person, but as a writer. In the past one could console themselves with the thought that your writing will influence future generations, but now, facing ecological catastrophe, doesn't look like there will be a lot of readers to edify in the future...

ploob

Yo where's Ilya Fishperson?

Dylan Thomas seems relevant today: “Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night. Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night. Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. And you, my father, there on the sad height, Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”

Hans Anders

One of the more cynical things to happen in this genocide is western countries bombastically dropping aid into Gaza. Gaza doesn’t need a few spectacular air droppings. It needs a lot of unspectacular trucks coming in. But the press loves it and it suggests we’re doing something while we’re actually allowing the starvation siege to continue.

John

Radio Wristslitters intro for this episode.

George P

I’m beginning to think the people behind Biden are trying to lose the election on purpose. Why else would they send the decrepit old fuck to the border to talk about how actually Republicans are the ones preventing the border from being secure, making the border an issue only helps Trump. They saw how much money the gullible MSNBC rubes donated to any and all anti Trump people during his first term and are looking to cash in on a repeat, knowing they can just blame the loss on Arabs in Michigan, leftists, and alleged Putin sympathizers.

Doug Cartel

Americans wiped out all resistance to them in the western US during the Indian wars and I don't think it was very long at all before they pivoted 160 degrees and went "Oh what a noble savage, the Indian, how I miss thee". I mean Hitler was fetishizing them in that same way in the 20s and 30s (clearly emulating us), so a lot of the guys who fought the Indian wars were probably still in their 40s or 50s. Israel is going to have the same trajectory. A decade after the dream of a palestinian state is truly dead and gone, with palestinians either scattered across the world or dead, they'll turn around and be like "ugh I feel *so bad* for them"

George P

His Hasbara tour of duty is over

William

Does the NYT retracting a story really mean anything anymore? It’s probably a big deal in the journalism world but for the mass of people, especially their readership, the damage is done and I’m not sure the embarrassment of a retraction means as much to them

Doug Cartel

NYT still hasn't answered for the million dead iraqis whose slaughter they cheerled, so at this point if they claim X country is doing a crime I by default believe they're lying. What Uighur camps? What Ukrainian genocide? What rapes? What beheaded babies? Give me literally any reason why you don't belong in prison for all the suffering you've caused with all this lying you've done for every bombing campaign you've ever endorsed.

Doug Cartel

I wouldn't say the russians were 'routed' in Kherson, I followed that fight and the ukrainians were bashing their heads against the wall for a solid month before the russians just picked up and left. The AFU complained at the time that even though they took Kherson, it was a hollow victory because the Russians had withdrawn in a swift and covert manner, so they never got to trap them and get payback for the severe losses they took just trying to get near the city. Those VDV guys are a lot more skilled than I thought, or Ukraine just sucked more than I thought, I don't know.

Mark Ames

They weren’t routed in Kherson though they were forced into a humiliating withdrawal; in fact the difficulties Ukraine had in the south in August-September 2022 were a sort of harbinger of what was to come. The Russians were routed in the Kharkov region, where they were vastly outnumbered and out-commanded.

William

So the question is, can Russia move on the Ukrainians faster than NATO countries can warm up to the idea of sending in troops. I guess it also depends on how antsy the polish get

William

Germany lost WW2 for a variety of reasons, but expending most of their best and most skilled laborers on the eastern front was when the scales started to tip in the direction of the allies. Basically Germany was Clubber Lang in rocky 3? I guess?

William

Anyways, Ukraine doesn’t have the same reliance on their domestic manufacturing base as the Nazis did, but the manpower issue remains. Also of note, the death and dearth of many necessary NCOs. Without static lines, Ukraine probably won’t be able to hold positions very well just be they can’t coordinate their troops well enough, for one

Knicks Fan 1000

Has the idea been considered that Isreal threatened the US by saying that if they withhold arms shipments they they will preemptively nuke Iran

Magic Mikey

Actually even Michael Kofman has since noted the ukaf took huge losses in their successful Kharkov push in autumn 2022. The Ruaf otoh had largely already withdrawn by the time of the offensive. Some Ruaf units were cut off and relief forces dispatched to extract them but the Ruaf largely retreated in good order. Look at the cnn reports from the period, very little evidence of Russian losses in men or machines. Alexander mercouris is a good summary source for what's actually been going on .

Damnboooi

This might be conspiratorial but with Macron I can’t help but think of the Mussolini quote “I only need a few thousand dead to sit at the peace conference as a man who has fought." Maybe they sense they know where Ukraine is headed and want to send a few thousand Europeans to die so they can save face when they eventually accept Ukraines defeat. That way they point to their dead if people try and say they did nothing.

Hans Anders

I don’t think that the idea of “not arming Israel” has been considered in the US in the first place.

drizzly_november

Yeah, that tweet about overdoses is appalling. "Instead of trying to prevent deaths of despair, how can we instrumentalize them for NATO?"

drizzly_november

The Luttwak tweet is even funnier because the 19th century volunteer legions in Greece were a shitshow! They were totally in over their heads, hated the actual Greeks they met, and most ended up wasting away from disease. The few that survived regretted ever going and became some of the Greek cause's bitterest critics.

etienne

100 americans per day die on the road just going to work, that sucks! what if they died for their Country instead

CR

How much of Biden and the Democrats helping Israel annihilate Gaza do you think is cope because their laundromat/pet CIA project in Ukraine has been taking nonstop Ls for the last year and a half?

CR

This also describes the first wave of international volunteers back in 2022. Anyone going now is the kind of psychopath who read Soldier of Fortune in the 70s-80s and dreams of hunting men for sport.

CR

Half and half, profiteers and utopian idiots

CR

"2. A Black USAan with a few hundred followers who also mocked Bushnell’s death as “a white person who killed himself for other white people” and went on to talk about how Arabs were responsible for the transatlantic slave trade so Arabs are garbage." This sounds the most fake. Did he start all his tweets with "As a black man?" Even the Black Israelites wouldn't say that about palestinians

CR

The current upper middle class Boomer eschatology may be the first time a death cult succeeds

CR

Trump was demonstrably better on foreign policy, except for Israel. Bibi owns his ass.

CR

Oh cool. The British government released its own brag about helping Ukraine fight the orcs on Wednesday to keep the news cycle going. Then Macron talks shit. Now the Canadians and Germans are at bat telling the world they they are throwing human shields in front of Ukrainian Nazis because god forbid the losers of this war lose and have to inconvenience themselves the hegemon. I cannot see how this doesn’t end with dead NATO soldiers and then what? We’re on the brink of war with Russia because the empire is run by the most stupid people on earth.

PostmasterFenian

A rand report detailed that england, germany and france would take at least a month to assemble ONE ARMOURED BRIGADE! and that would require raiding other formations.

PW

Einstein legitimized Imaginary Science. Drove Science right off a cliff.

PW

In my experience when things happen that quickly at an old established organization to the extent that people do not stand in the way by actually doing their jobs, its because it comes straight from the top, ie Sulzberger (Chairman) and Levien (CEO). From the outside it looks like the NYT works directly for Israel.

Mark Ames

I've never heard or read Kofman say that, do you have a link?

MoldyTolge

There goes history rhyming again

MoldyTolge

Amongst their own media set it would be extremely embarrassing, while most people probably wouldn’t notice. But precious journalistic reputation means so much to NYT.

MoldyTolge

It’s a good spot to vent. In regards to number 3 I have been seen some younger American liberal Israel supporters going through auto-radicalization since the start of the new year.

MoldyTolge

Episode art feels like an unreleased Vatican Shadow EP

Jimothy Realname

A german frigate misidentified an american drone as a Houthi drone and fired two SM-2 missiles at it. The missiles failed and fell into the sea. An inquiry after the incident found that the missiles can no longer be procured as they are no longer in production. The german frigate must now withdraw from the Red Sea.

Miko

In the early days of the conflict the US media gleefully swapped coverage to Gaza as a welcome diversion from the Ukraine debacle, it's telling how bad the ethnic cleansing is that they swapped back to the very obvious loss in Ukraine as the "more positive" story to focus on for western audiences.

Jason Thompson

Do you mean towards being pro-Israel, like this idiot? (She is about 40 I think) Or pro-Palestine?

Jason Thompson

I recognize of course there is gross antisemitism burbling around the edges of Palestinian activism and decent activist should (and does) call this out. But I think if, like this person I keep referring to, you are convinced Greta Thunberg’s plush octopus is an antisemitic symbol, you basically don’t have the mental stability & resilience to be pro Palestine

Jason Thompson

Randomly: any plans to do an audiobook of Erdogan Pizza? I know it takes a lot of time. But, I’d pay $$ for it.

Jonathan Penn

With respect to Gaza, was anyone else in the War Nerd community struck by and disgusted by how the airdrop of MREs into Gaza resembled the dropping of "gifts" to contestants in the arenas depicted in the Hunger Games dystopia trilogy? On so many levels, the reality and the optics of that airdrop shocked and disgusted me and I wondered if anyone else felt similarly. Jon Penn

MoldyTolge

Yea, I do mean the idiot option. There aren’t that many liberal Zionist 20 somethings, but some have a career riding on it and they’re getting increasingly murder-minded.

CR

My first thought was “I assume IDF is using cluster bombs, or will start now, because how else could Biden made this monstrously more evil.”

Steven Thomas

"Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity. ...A shape with lion body and the head of a man, A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun, Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds." Couldn't help but think of a bit of Yeats while you guys were describing Biden's blank stare. "A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun" was just repeatedly echoing in my head.

Dorst Savijeski

Long story short beside historically rooting for democrats in the oval office, all the way from Baden Nüttenburg as a non voter. I would vote for Biden again. He had bad luck chaos starts earlier.
