The show doesn't directly say but it is heavily implied that meimei is in love with lakan as he always played with her and how good he was with fengxian. But meimei still chose for lakan to choose his true love.

By marrying Fengxian, Lakan also helps Maomao a lot since she becomes his legitimate child, hence a member of his affluent clan.

"I feel like he deserves better" Yes he does and the shows refusal to do so is why I started disliking it. It's like Lakan was a bad guy in the web novel and the author changed it for the light novel without thinking about how it fit the other characters actions. It just doesn't fit. It makes Maomao look like a stupid little teenager that just hates her Dad for the sake of it because "I'm jelous of him" is not justification to treat him like a turd under her shoe. The only conclusion is that the author plans to make this the longest light novel in history and this is just the beginning (10 volumes in btw) so their relationship can't progress yet. A lot of things in this show make me come to that conclusion.
