How did Mello know the names and faces of agents? What am I missing?

In the manga Mello had a spy within the SPK, and killed that spy so Near couldn’t try and find them out afterwards. Also, Mello was a successor to L and probably has his own investigative skills so he probably could have just investigated the group and found out that way.

OK, thanks the spy would make sense, but it would be nice to get explanation from anime. The story starts to feel sloppy ngl.

Yeah, the anime kinda glosses over a lot of stuff that happens in the manga post L's death unfortunately
