So they aren’t actually playing go. They’re playing a game called othello (or reversi) It’s a simplified version of go, instead of using the intersections to place pieces, you play on the squares themselves. Each piece has a white and a black side, and you capture simply by have your colour on either end of a line of theirs. Instead of removing opponents pieces you flip them to your colour, pieces never leave the board once played and you always have to capture at least one piece for a valid play. Scoring is the same as go and the only other difference is it’s played on a much smaller board.
