Caw seriously crashed out there, but truthfully they do need to give us an example of what it takes to break one of these contracts and what happens when a contract is broken. It would help hammer home the fine line her family seems to be walking

Rick and Marthe is suspiciously close to Rick and Morty. Maybe that's why you need a very high IQ to understand this show as well. /s

Breaking a magic contract ends very badly. It’s mentioned in the LNs but they gloss over it in the anime. You die a very gruesome death. The wording of the contract determines where you can push and where there’s a hard line that shouldn’t be crossed. This specific contract has kind of ( intentionally) loose wording and it allows for letters because they weren’t accounted for in it. But they are treading a very fine line. The anime doesn’t make things very clear unfortunately. And yes, Ferdinand does help Rozemyne with it from the background. And the gods, well… wait and see !

I will say that the limits of the magic contract aren't all that well defined, but I don't remember if in the light novels Myne's letter refers to Gunther as her dad. Things like that and the hugs are probably not allowed, and the consequence of breaking the contract is death. I can definitely see where you are coming from on the head pat/smoothing her hair being potentially too affectionate if a hug is also a problem. Without a clearly defined limit it feels a bit arbitrary on what is fine, and what isn't. To be fair if you know that breaking the contract will kill you and your loved ones you probably wouldn't be too keen on testing the limits. One thing I wish they had made clearer was that the orphans in Hasse were all malnourished and many had obviously been beaten by the Mayor. They kind of briefly mentioned the malnourished previously, but it would have been nice to really drive it home when Myne visits in person. Related to that, considering the their treatment, its important to understand why more of them didn't want to join the temple. In rural farming villages like Hasse when children come of age they are granted a certain amount of land. Even orphans like them have a chance to make something of their lives. Joining the temple means giving up that chance, and also means that they can no longer get married. Myne does a lot more to explain the drawbacks to the children because she doesn't want them to join the temple unaware of how it will affect their lives.

Just making sure it's not misunderstood, 14 is not of age. 15 is of age in this world. Considering that they start working at 7 it's actually quite late when you think about it. Also it's never brought up but life expectancy for commoners is likely quite low.

Death is only the ultimate punishment for breaking a contract. Slight breaching doesn’t mean automatically death like many other are writing. As they didn’t define what counts as “acting as family” they can go away with some stuff

One G. O A. T. One Dream

its " its important to understand why more of them didn't want to join the temple" which is why its surly gonna be explained in the anime soon, you taking about stuff that has not be explained yet, what you doing? But agree with the magic contract, one of the biggest flaw in the series as the author really failed to define what "treating someone as Family" means. a thing that gets even more comically with how Myne treats everyone she likes as family. So im having a head cannon that maybe the contract was never real, as Sylvester knew they just needed the scare to stay in line. or maybe there different types of magic contracts that we just dont get told about, some that only warn of the breaking but never dose anything if broken (honestly the author should have simply gone with that, as it make much more sens, imagine her family dying from a mistake, she currently the most VIP person in the place, her dying or going berserk is not options Sylvester would have any interest in, and why even have a "instant death" contract on a bunch of commoners and girl who could die from a mild breeze. like what we doing? every story has its flaws.

One G. O A. T. One Dream

We do get that but its not in this season. Its one of the biggest criticism of this story as everything else is so well put together, but the one part that pretty damn important for the core story rest on a shrug. tho I will say if the anime had explained noble culture better we also would better understand right now the difference between a hug and a stroke on the head. ( which in the books also was said to be more like "a intentionally accidental touch of the head" were the anime have her straight up just stroking her. But, then again... it really doesn't help in defining the limits and rules of this BS contract )

These are clearly vibe based contracts. I would have liked to see a deity with a button rubbing their chin as they saw myne get close to her family.

It was something that should have been brought up this episode but wasn't so it was safe to say it was skipped. Honestly its pretty minor, and the exact kind of detail that they have been skipping. I think it adds cool world building and context, but that only really matters to the audience if they also make it clear how bad the treatment of the orphans was. Sylvester and Ferdinand are both completely fine with the magic contract killing Myne and her family if they break it. While she is very valuable to them, she is also very dangerous. Her frailty should not be confused with being weak, and if she really went crazy, she could cause a lot of damage. While the exact limits of the contract aren't well defined, the reasons behind it are well explained. The nobles want to control her, and it is a perfect tool for doing that. Yes they treat her quite well on the surface, but they don't believe in leaving things to chance. If she breaks the contract that just means she couldn't be controlled and needed to be eliminated. At the end of the day, nobles don't see commoners as human. They know that they can control her behavior with that threat hanging over her head and are willing to have her resent them for it if it gets them what they want. Would their society be better off if they worked together with commoners regularly, especially ones with the devouring so they don't just die? Of course. Will they do that? Not a chance. Maintaining their power and the status quo are all they care about, even to their own detriment.

The hand pat existed in a grey area where it could be justified as a move to adjust the hair ornament. It was a minor cheat. It wasn't blatant enough to violate the contract magic, especially as it was done in the secret room only in front of people who were already fully aware of the truth.
