The reason he had the giant bed carriage was partially because of all the wives, but more so because he inherited the weight of the elephant people and needed something capable of transporting him.

The old women were thrown out by a smaller town in that kusdek country so the village wouldn't have to feed them. Technically the civil war caused their displacement but that was due to the ripples the conflict had on that kingdom overall, so related storylines but not tied tightly together.

I'm iffy on the mercs fates. On the one hand, they were only after him because they were being paid (technically they were more assassins in this case). But that also means that without a person paying them, they have no reason to come back. On the other hand, you can't be lenient on criminals. Either way, I'm just glad he didn't invite them into his town and recognized them as a dangerous element, too many series take the "really good guy" approach that would doom a real town. Crimes need to be punished or more crimes will be committed.
