Zettour's plan was reckless but from his perspective he either succeeds and wins a great victory, or dies and his death will wake up high command to how desperate and bad the situation is. You have to respect his resolve. Also, I love the scene with him and Tanya back to back. It shows that of all the people in this world, she and Zettour are the most similar. They can make cold logical decisions of the optimal way to win, but also have the same madness inside them. Both are monsters.

Fallen Granny

Zettour is Aura farming like crazy this episode. Holy gigachad.

peak of peak as always tanya the evil be cooking

Yea Mary wouldn’t last a day in any other professional military. She’d be transferred, demoted, given the worst jobs, or even friendly fired or even worse, just turned into a lab rat. She’s the type of person that you do not want to be watching ur back. It might be a little ironic to say this, but the battlefield, which is already a place of insanity, has no place for the irrational mind.

Competent commies? Wait, that's illegal!

I don't think viktoria is even at the level of the mages in tanya's battalion. She has certainly improved a lot but I think the reason she is actually in the battalion is to be tanya's adjutant. Since tanya is female her adjutant has to be female.

didn't you see the movie? she was fighting that drake guy and neither were able to hurt the other. she's definitely able to keep up. mary is just too op and she doesn't have any reason to risk her life in this part so she just withdraws. oh yeah and don't forget who saved tanya from anson's grip when all weiss could do was hesitate.

Idk if it’s ironic or not, but the commies having very strong shields seems a little uncharacteristic of their real life counterpart. Specifically, their tanks and other armored vehicles aren’t exactly known to be “super armored and safe vehicles” compared to the western counterparts. For example, their early tanks were of such poor quality that the japanese were able to kill the crew inside by literally running up to the tanks on foot iirc. And even in ww1-2 all the way to modern day, their tanks don’t exactly have the reputation of being well armored and safe. It’s like they’ve invested into speed and damage - ie big cannons and mobility. On the other hand, western tanks do have the reputation of being well armored and survivable. For instance, the British challenger series of tanks are one of the most heavily armored tanks. And for ww2, German tanks were insanely well armored compared with other tanks.

Fallen Granny

Have you heard of soviet heavy tanks? Both the KVs and ISs are insanely well armored - even more than german tanks (especially cos the german heavy armor was produced in tiny quantities). But either way mages are not tanks, there is no correlation that can be drawn. It is entirely believable that these Tsarist elite units would focus on defense, if they were used as bodyguard units or point defense units. Russian Tsarist tactics focused A LOT on building fortified positions or artillery positions in middle of the battlefield Cesar style. Look into wagon forts.

General "Iron Balls" Zettour

Chuck

She went through the same training as the rest of the battalion in season 1 when Tanya was just trying to get them all to quit.

…I must now dive into irl Soviet heavy tank lore. Thank you for bringing that to my attention. Tbh most of my tank related knowledge is really just around tank destroyers, light tanks, and modern mbts. And yea, mages aren’t tanks, but it was just a for fun thought I had. I feel like it’s the closest analogue we have irl because well, planes and helicopters generally aren’t exactly built for exchanging and tanking direct fire. So tanks were the best thing I could think of regarding the defensive differences between the federation mages and empire’s

Yoruunmei

Also after reading ur point focusing on defense, I had a thought about what characteristics they focused on for their tech. Because obviously, for any system, you can’t just maximize everything right? Take a tank for example. You can’t give it a giant 150mm gun, super think armor, while also expecting it to be as quick accelerating and traversing the hull and turret. That’s just not how physics works. So obviously, given whatever universal constraints any system has, they’d have to pick and choose. So for the empire jewel tech, they have height capability and speed. Whereas for the fed, they seem to be prioritizing shielding and seems like more speed, or at least acceleration compared to the empire. Though it’s a bit difficult to hypothesize because the anime obviously doesn’t really go into the intricacies of how mechanically magic works.

Soviet TDs were also heavily armored due to armor angling like the SU-85, and the Soviets are kinda known for having the heaviest MBTs during the post WW2 and cold war era, as they were the only nation to focus on that while everyone else just maxed guns and speed. There is a ton of misinfo and propaganda regarding WW2 tanks. F.e. german tanks actually sucked ass, and the ones that were good were never mass produced. Soviet tanks have a reputation of breaking down easily but its not really the case, they are only slightly more unreliable than the US tanks. Soviet T34s and lend leased Shermans were sent out to help in the east against Japan towards the end of the war, they had to drive them partially through mountains, deserts and tundra, and they managed to do just that with the shermans and T34s breaking down at about the same rate. This reputation of unreliable tanks probably comes from the fact that they didnt really "fix" their tanks. They used them until they were inoperable and then trashed them. Because it was literally cheaper to get a brand new T34 from an already established factory line than to make the specific parts that they were missing.
