Without the protection of the pledges your no better then a farm animal meaning the other Exceeds can kill you.

if the pledges don't count you, then you're no longer immune to being killed. Also the mind reading thing works because anything you bet in a pledge is magically made true. You bet your memories and lost? Then your memories are magically taken away
