No, in this case I don't think it is. Which is odd for me to say since I normally prefer a background. I hadn't really noticed or missed the lack of a background because the action poses are so good, and an all-black background makes it seem they are fighting in a darkened room. An all-white background would likely lessen the effect. As a variation, this fight works very well so far. In general, though, I still prefer a realistic background. This one is a good example however of what excellent artwork can overcome.
