Highly Educated Trucker

With respect to the characters not being in any danger of death/lasting injury, just look at it like an episode of Columbo. When you watch an episode of Columbo, there is 0% chance that the bad guy gets away with his/her crimes. Columbo will, 100% of the time, catch the bad guy in the end. But it's still fun to watch. Same thing here. Yes, the Straw Hats will ultimately shrug off whatever incredible amounts of damage they've taken. But it's still fun watching them fight and win. And they're not immune to losing, which helps maintain the narrative tension.
