The discussion at the end is just perfect... Thank you

Mr.Atkins

Best discussion they've had on this show in forever.

Eduardo

Cant believe you had the self control to wait on the basement episode

NB

Hey. I‘ve watched your reactions! First of all: thanks for all four episodes in one row! But I have again few complaints, because you are complaining. 1. You’re complaining how the Cart Titan got over the wall. But you completely ignored that the Female, Beast and Armored climbed the wall over the three season. A good example why people are actually mad at you. 2. I still want to adress the horse thing: Annie did not „teleport“. The walls have just 100 and 130km between them and Annie just took two free days off. You can see this in Annie’s OVA. You also complained (for some reasons) the horses dilemma in Season 3 Episode 13. You claimed the show does not know how „horses are working“. I don‘t get the problem. The space between Shiganshina and the FOREST(!) is maybe 1km. Mikasa even said they were looking for wood in their childhood. 3. The whole consciousness thing is bs. No question. But I am probably the only guy who things that‘s not plot armor. They never said you can kill a titan shifter by cutting off his head or something. The audience knew Titan Shifters can survive a lot. Just the explanation was silly. But they kinda „soft“-fixed it in Season 4. Hajime seems to find it stupid himself. 5. Your Erwin hate still makes not sense. Of course soldiers are dying like flies. They‘re fighting against huge humans with unknown super powers. I still can‘t getting over it. :D

Gu

,I think what are told to expect is very important in mindset for the show , its a medival Survival shonen/show, and that's what the audience is supposed to think it is initially with incredible action sequences animation battles and some very meaningful dialogue you aren't supposed to think the opposing side has any complexity (or if it has complexity it's entirely to be fantasy reason, hence not taking the morality to be too fluid o)considering the facts that we know pre basement and the premise of the show that this is just a simple human struggle versus some fantasy creatures that are very cruel ,it would take a massive scale type of twist to affect that . Hence knowing their motivations after a certain point considering all we know is humanity in the walls and once we beat these titans we will have some peace it's supposed to be one-sided perception. None of us expected anything of grand scale in the basement, however some people like to hype aot for others using the basement as the writing hype reason. Edit :Claroos I disagree with your statement of rollercoaster I think the last 6 eps have been consistently good

In episode 19, the show continues after the ending credits, hope you guys don't miss it

Bryan Cobb

With most the important stuff already being said by others, I'll just point out that this episode further confirms that Reiner is the Plot-Armored Titan.

Manny

To this day people still argue about which character they would’ve saved lol. Armin was my choice just cause he has goals outside of killing and revenge. The best way to describe AOT is that it’s a bittersweet show, and this episodes perfectly encapsulates that. Yes Armin is back but Erwin is dead.

Too late to say anything. They’ve already finished season 3 and we’re just waiting for them to hit Patreon

Yeah, I also left the same comment when ep 3x13, I hope they noticed at that time.

Cue the "what the fuck" song from tiktok. (I don't actually know who sings it)

Episode 19 has post credit scene

This was a more enjoyable discussion for sure. They finally start to get into some of the real themes and motifs of the show. It's a shame it sounds like it's all downhill from here. I think that the concerns about the validation of blood libel propaganda is a legitimate grievance. Given that the next few episodes very suddenly start to evoke real Jewish persecution imagery, it makes sense to have that concern. But I do not subscribe to the idea that this show promulgates antisemitism or is in any way pro-fascist. On the contrary, I think it's fairly explicitly, and viscerally against those things. I think there's a discussion to be had about whether Isayama's use of this imagery and allusions is irresponsible. But it's something you either move past or you don't. I'd like to see the rest of their reactions to season 4, but, considering this is probably a more serious sticking point than even horse stamina, I do have concerns. If it's just going to be them ignoring the actual story and themes, and hating the experience, I'll probably just tune out. The fact that they are already dismissing it as "cringe" does not bode well.

Anna Kyruin

Getting ready for everyone to get upset that Nerdy and Claroose don't catch every single tiny detail in the next few episodes. It's their first time watching it blind, so please everyone just cut them a huge reel of slack. ^_^

wheatfat

It's good that you guys are giving up on the "how did X get here?" stuff since it's actually your confusion that doesn't make sense, not the story. People wearing ODM gear can get over the wall? If only they had shown that for the entire show. This titan we've never seen before and know nothing about can climb over the wall? Impossible, surely. That's my main criticism though, good conversation otherwise and have been enjoying the reactions. Definitely interested to see how you feel about the next bit.

Ferenczi Laurentiu

Arming was always jacked BTW. They all are. Growing up as child soldiers will do that to you

Minerva Ravenclaw
>>106462641

I don't understand how AOT propagandize blood libel? It's not like they're encouraging people to go with this path🤣 I mean there are thousands of movies that discuss this theme ... I just don't understand their logic 😅

Minerva Ravenclaw
>>106466635

Well to be fair it's hard to catch every detail when you're busy laughing at characters and saying this is silly and saying the horses don't make sense, every two minutes. So yea it's hard

Wangus
>>106462641

It's because, if you take the Eldians as a direct analogue for real world Jewish people, then essentially it's saying that the hatred of Jews was in some way justified because they can turn into monsters and eat people. It's particularly problematic because that is pretty close to real-world propaganda spread by Nazis to dehumanize Jews and justify their extermination. While the show clearly doesn't condone Marley's oppression of Eldians, it's still evoking a real piece of antisemitic propoganda in a way that is, at the very least, very uncomfortable. As though it is asking "What if the Nazis were right, and the Jews really were non-human monsters?" I don't think Isayama had any intention of implying anything negative about Jewish people. I don't even think Eldians are meant to represent Jewish people in the literal way that some people assume. But, even so, he's clearly using very distinct imagery to evoke that setting, and as a consequence it does make for a lack of ethical clarity on a topic where lacking ethical clarity can have some real world consequences. I don't think it makes the show bad. I don't think it invalidates the actual message and themes of the show. But it is a legitimate flaw and something that does need to be acknowledged and discussed.

ArtOfAdequacy
>>106462641

Doesn't making the Jewish analogue in this story actual monsters just prove the point more? Even if the Nazis were right and the Jewish people were literal monsters, treating people that way still doesn't solve the problem or provide justification. Blaming an entire people is shown to be just as wrong, whether they can turn into giant titans or not.

Wangus
>>106462641

The problem is less what the actual message of the show, and more that the ethics of invoking Nazi blood libel propaganda in a story where there is such an apparent Jewish analogue and having that propaganda be validated by the lore and history within the world. Even if the show condemns Eldian oppression, it's still part of the history presented that Eldians at one point did subjugate the world with their non-human abilities. Entertaining the idea of "what if the Nazis were right about Jews being monsters" is still a problem even if your conclusion is that genocide is never justified. Like I said, personally, I don't think that the Eldian and Marleyans are intended to be direct stand-ins for Jews and Nazis in the sense that I don't think Isayama is giving his take on the Holocaust specifically. The story is more of a commentary on fascism and the cycle of war, hate and oppression that continues now, and whether there is any escape from it.

ArtOfAdequacy
>>106462641

Entertaining the idea of "what if the Nazis were right about Jews being monsters" is still a problem? Contextually maybe. The question itself isn't inherently unethical. Yeah if you were going "The Nazis were bad and wrong." and someone responds with "Were they tho?", obviously you can imply what they're meaning. But asking it as a basis to point out the underlying flaw in someone's belief is more challenging to it than just keeping to your side vs theirs. If you can't invoke and interact with their side they will be content to just sit there on their side and go "well we can't be sure, look at this heavily manipulated evidence that provides me with just enough doubt to not listen to you". But if you go to their side and point out how even by their own claims, they are still wrong and idiotic then now they have to try and defend. And as it turns out, questions and doubts make for weak, inconsistent justification for genocide. Anyway, my point being; it's a valid and effective argument, one that requires the premise of "Ok, let's pretend you're right."

Manifique Tae

great discussion, now i want season 4 it just started the show just started.. best season.. IGNORE THE HATERS you're disaccusion are great

Manifique Tae

It's weird that people see the Eldians as a Jewish allegory and not an allegory for White Europeans in the first place. Is it just the star on the armbands that causes people to misunderstand it so badly so often?

Wangus
>>106462641

It's not that weird and it's not really a misunderstanding, Isayama is clearly evoking specific anti-Jewish imagery and language from the time. The star armband. The germanic names and setting. Language referring to them devils. And, again, the blood libel propaganda is all very specifically anti-Jewish. Someone even pointed out in the discord that the Nazis had something called the Madagascar plan where they intended to exile Jews to Madagascar (which is where Paradis is located in AoT). It's pretty clear that Isayama took direct inspiration from the treatment of Jews under the Third Reich. Which is why it's unfortunate, because when you evoke that imagery our immediate inclination is to assume that Eldians are, in fact, meant to be Jews. And Marley is meant to be literally Germany under Nazi rule. So we assume we have a clear good/evil line. So when the show tries to blur or question that line, it can be uncomfortable. The situation in the world of AoT is clearly a lot more complicated than that and coming up with an answer to put an end to the oppression and violence is a bit more difficult than "taking down an evil empire".

Mekar
>>106462641

Calling them devils and the blood libel stuff is literally about white people. He mixed in some of the Holocaust imagery with the armbands to make it clear what was going on pretty quick but literally everything else about the Eldians is European allegory. Unless you live in some alternate history where Jewish people were the ones who colonized the world 100 years ago, but that's not our world. It makes no sense to think of the Eldians as Jewish unless your train of thought literally goes as far as "armband=jewish" and you stop there.

ArtOfAdequacy
>>106462641

Well, it was a war that involved the whole world so it's pretty widespread. And is talked about a decent amount, so it's hard not to jump to Jews when a race of people are being persecuted. I also don't know how prevalent it is to think of all Europeans as a single race. Same goes for when slavery is used in story telling. Lots of people have been enslaved throughout history, including Jewish people, but that isn't who comes to mind first, and most likely isn't who is being talked about in those stories.

Wangus
>>106462641

Blood Libel is very specifically a piece of anti-Jewish conspiracy propaganda as is likening Jews to the devil or saying that they made a deal with the devil. It is most definitely not something applied to just general "white people" or all Europeans.

Just watched Clarus’ twitch stream on her thoughts on S3 and I just want to say that I have thoroughly enjoyed all your reactions and discussions on AOT. With all the “contentious” discussions, thoughts, and all. I think it really really sucks that people are ripping into y’all’s thoughts on the show. It would be so boring if y’all had the same cookie-cutter reaction as any other react channel. I love that you both have your own thoughts and insights on the show and go into detail on it. Like, I can clearly see that y’all enjoyed the show and aren’t hating on it for no reason. While the Jewish/WWII allegorical elements fell flat for y’all, I really do hope y’all continue the reaction for S4 and the rest of the show, there’s so much more that the show offers and isn’t trying to rely on this “crutch” of a story telling device. Personally, as someone who is a staunch social justice and history enthusiast, AOT came off as a story on anti-fascism/anti-racism to me, but I completely understand whatever take you both get from the show. I just hope y’all can tune out the hate and know that there are more people who have enjoyed you and Nerdy’s reaction to AOT 🙏

I don't know think it's a direct parallel atleast . It's applicability, I believe, while it uses WW2 imagery for some uses the show(which maybe I guess adds a sense of appeal to varying degrees for some ppl ) has its own narrative and general messages about war. That are applicable from outside a ww2 context. While it's simple to equate Jews to eldians from imagery in a superficial standpoint( which is intended at those points prob ) , the Marlins are the ones who act like Nazis in the current time, which doesn't make sense since the eldians are German inspired , it's got elements of both groups WW2 in both Marley and eldia in order to deceive short sighed thinkers that it's simply a parallel.(but the use is definitely partially there for shock) .(as alot of things in Aot are supposed to be mindfucks) ,but Aot will have more general themes shown of war that really I don't know WW2 itself being famous for such as generational hatred, in this case it's more emphasized on the racism vs just it being religious practices of actual Jews , propaganda and the complexity and fragility of society easily sucoming to war. Edit: also they haven't watched S4 so it's difficult to really speak wholly about what kind of direction and how the story handles featuring it's themes.

Gu
>>106462641

I don't really know what isayama was in mindset when he chose to add that honestly ,however I don't really think there's another word other than devils that he could have used to label the eldians by the Marley's as their as a kind of denounce term to use through s4 I think that's why he added it. Not because he knew anything about blood libel. Also I believe many of the Marleans are Italian.( Tho yes they do act like Nazis ) . Having been around yt n TT aot most ppl don't know blood libel or think deeply about the imagery. Ofc it definitely did invoke some fascist daydreamers but mostly edgy superficalists, and maybe some crazy conspirators which any big community has its Fair share of.

Zyrus
>>106462641

Way too many people read way too much into everything in animes, and it's absurd and boring when you have to tread on eggshells for every little thing in discussions. This attitude right here is why I stopped trying to discuss politics with anyone.

Armani

Waw I actually enjoyed this . This is probly the first episode for the season you guys , didn’t complain about ... almost , the cart titan lcan just climb over the wall ya know 🤨. I feel Nerdy does watch this show just to look for flaws

David

Bro their latest YouTube post is hot with the comments. I wonder if they will end up posting the rest of the series even on Patreon?

Anyone know their Discord?

Regardless if they like it or not aot still a masterpiece lol

I mean, is ok to dislike the show and be super critical of it. However, their points and criticism are flawed. Their arguments are not strong enough and valid to justify their criticism. Im not saying the show is perfect but is definitely among the greatest. It feels like they never watched a mystery show before. When I watched the show for the first time I wanted to know everything as well and I knew that the show will end up answering everything and in the meantime, I simply enjoyed the moments in between like the action, hype moments, character moments. I was having fun not knowing everything and simply make predictions from the small hints or pieces of information here and there. They forgot about suspension of disbelief. Nerdy complaints on how Erwin’s plans always kill a bunch of people and yet he is unable to share what he would of have done to avoid that. Example, end of season two when Rainer and Berthold were running away with Eren and Historia Erwin circled around them bringing with him a horde of Titans which clashed with Rainer and slow him down. Yes, a bunch of people died but it worked and got Eren back, otherwise how in the world would they have saved Eren without some people dying. Remember, Eren is the last hope for humanity inside the walls, without him everyone else is fucked. He is worth the sacrifice as bad as that may sound. For Nerdy not to analyze that much and simple deems Erwin incompetent when he is fighting against an impossible enemy who know more than they do bogles my mind.

In a way it’s kinda dumb about them talking about nazi stuff in aot when they are big Star Wars fans and the empire is almost the same shit they kinda are the nazis of Star Wars

Stefan
>>106535448

Bro, they won't like season 4 either. Looking at the past three seasons it's pretty obvious they won't. Their entire shtick has been to find details to harp on as opposed to enjoying the mystery and trying to figure out what is going on. They just finished 16, 17, and 18 of season 3. Two of those episodes are STILL in the top 10 TV show episodes of all the time on IMDB. 18 being on position #3 currently. I don't watch any of their other reactions (The Expanse is dogshit imo), but I bet their criticism is much more nuanced in those reactions than for AoT, despite AoT rating MUCH higher. It's been obvious their train of thought has been "Damn we don't like this show but it generates revenue so guess we'll just continue watching it, but we don't have to like it". And when you don't like something, you're not going to find the beauty in it, only its faults. That's what's happening, and that's why the comments here are so full of hate.

Mitchell Edward Newton

You'll appreciate the legwork after you catch up. It's meant to be a straightforward seeming concept at first glance.

Skeezz
>>106453786

I mean the biggest problem is that they just start talking randomly during the dialogue in anime, and they are not catching at least 50 stuff but most like 75% of important stuff that is said, so ofc their whole perception is wrong.

Skeezz
>>106456469

I mean ofc people do argue which one should be saved when that is the theme, and yeah if we look about the goals and stuff definite choice is armin, but if you are bringing back someone just for pure cause of the war and to finish it in your favor you will bring back erwin, we all now how armin was pretty useless in upcoming seasons and the end of the show, but it is also very possible that erwin would stick with certain someone and the whole end would be probably different then how it ended in the manga.
