I’ve commented this before but bastards CANNOT inherit the throne. Gendry cannot inherit the throne but the bastards existence are still a threat to Joffrey and his siblings because of the whole black of hair thing. And Joffrey himself is a bastard so he can’t inherit the throne. The only one truly in line within the Baratheon family is stannis, but rob took the throne from the Targaryens so Dany is the only one left so she says she’s the rightful heir because they usurped her family

A LITTLE HISTORY AND LORE FOR Y’ALL 😆: (This isn’t in the show but only in the books, and not a spoiler either so can be shared with the whole group) Aemon Targaryen is not a member of the Nights Watch because of anything to do with being blind. He was first sent to the Citadel at age 9 by his grandfather, King Daeron II, because Daeron already had many grown sons who had sons of their own, and he believed that having so many potential heirs just hanging around was basically bad politics. So Daeron sent Aemon away to the Citadel to learn to be a Maester, because he was his father’s fourth son and not very far up the line for the crown (even still, Aemon’s father Maeker objected to his son being sent away). Years later, by the time Daeron had passed away and the crown was handed down to Aemon’s father Maeker, and then later with King Maeker’s passing, all of the other heirs had met with early deaths through battles and such, so it was determined by a Great Council that Aemon was next in line. However, Aemon was 35 by this point and had spent most of his life either studying to become or being a Maester. He had no interest in being anything else and so he renounced the throne. After that, he decided to take the black and join the Nights Watch, so that no one could ever try and use him to usurp the next king. The Great Council then offered the throne to Aemon’s little brother Aegon, who accepted it (Aegon was the grandfather of the Mad King and Daenerys’s great grandfather, just to help with the family tree lol). It’s said that Maester Aemon just lost his sight in old age and due to all the years of reading by candlelight.

I literally said the same thing Adison in yalls previous reaction that Robb’s not prideful. thats why he was smart enough to decline jamies 1 on 1 duel he knows jamie has superior combat prowess & if he wouldve essentially been like alot of other men (cause men do have a thing about their pride) & said “i aint scared lets fight” he woudlve definitely lost. It’s so interesting that they are talking about Maester Aemon giving up the throne to go to the nights watch. Jan 18th you will find out more about what happened. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is about Maester Aemons brothers. We don’t have to wait to long for season 1.

So one thing I think needs clarifying is that Stannis was Robert's older brother and Renly is Robert's younger brother (Robert was the middle son). Robert became king because of the rebellion so he literally broke the line of succession by the very act of becoming king. Now that he's gone and people are saying that Joffrey, Marsalla, and Tommen weren't his kids, Stannis is trying to claim that he's king because of line of succession. Meanwhile Renly is saying "F the line of succession. The line of succession didn't matter when Robert became king so why should it matter now? I should be king because I'd make a good one." The thing about line of succession, bastards don't qualify. They are literally considered illegitimate aka NOT LEGAL. So killing off Robert's bastards doesn't change Stannis' claim, because an older legal brother trumps illegal kids. And it doesn't matter to Renly because a younger legal brother trumps illegal kids AND he isn't even trying to become king using the line of succession, he's using popular vote. So what Joffrey did was purely about strengthening his claim and his claim only. Because while legal kid trumps illegal kid, not actually his kid vs illegal kid is a real threat.

He knew the truth and thought that made him safe, but at the end of the day power was the thing that got him killed, even having that knowledge he thought would keep him safe!!! Which honestly is real about the real world too. Not to get political but there’s so many stories especially now about knowledge of incredibly illegal activities, but are all of those things leading to their demise? No because they have power. Knowledge is great until you don’t have the power to back it up.
