First off I appreciate this submission because it's such a different animation style than anything I have seen recently. With that being said I am looking forward to checking this out for the 1st time. However my cohosts may or may have not seen this one before lol they elaborate more about that in the video. Beowulf, Let's get it!

This is one of my favorite stories! I'm glad you watched the movie (even though the movie is a bit different from the original epic poem). A lot of modern fantasy actually traces their origins back to Beowulf. It's one of the oldest surviving works of English literature (written around 700-1000 AD), and no one actually knows who wrote it - people simply refer to the author as "Beowulf's poet." It had a HUGE influence on JRR Tolkien (the author of Lord of the Rings - which is my favorite author!). In the poem, Beowulf fights 3 monsters and each of them is supposed to reflect a stage of life. Grendel represents youthful strength and glory. Grendel's mother is pride and consequences (and the realization that violence creates cycles); and the dragon is supposed to represent inevitable death itself - ancient, patient, and impossible to fully escape. I think what makes the ending hit so hard is that Beowulf actually wins against the dragon... but he still dies. It's so different from a lot of modern fantasy where victory usually restores everything. In this story, even the greatest hero cannot defeat time. The best he can do it face it bravely and leave behind a legacy. It's a great story! :)
