I don't think Ned loved Catelyn as much as Sam loves Gillie because if he did, that thing that has yet to be revealed would never have been kept a secret from her. At the end of the day Ned didn't trust her like that. Sam trusts Gillie like that.

I never thought about the point James brings up with Sam and Jon being the only ones to have genuine affection for a woman and it not be anything more to it. I agree that Sam has the most genuine affection. But i think Jaime had genuine love for Brienne. and i think the Hound had genuine love (not romantic) for Arya. And Tyrion had genuine love for Sansa. That's all i can think of for now. I wouldnt include Ned either because we never saw it. i do believe it was there but, never saw it.

IMO Jon should have renounce his status immediately after coming back for it to be considered truly without scrutiny or judgement.
