manga comics use the drop of water next to the face in surprise to show embarrassment instead of the exclamation point of English.

old Will Eisner comics (The Spirit) used lines coming off the head like a sunburst to show embarrassment. Peanuts artist used the same thing his lines had a scrambled squiggle on top of the head to also denote the complex emotion of dissatisfaction along with embarrassment ;)
