Hello, Patrons! And happy Leap Yeap!

It's time for our first Chit Chat and Recommendation post of the year! A comfy space to update  each other on what we've been doing lately and all the things we’ve enjoyed during the month! My apologies for skipping January; my brain continues to function like a sieve with a shotgun blast through the net. But hey, at least that means I have more interesting recs to share this time out!

My January and February were busy as usual with real life commitments and responsibilities (RIP my burst pipe), but also a bit odd in spots! January felt a bit like being in stasis where the channel was concerned, because there was just so much fiddly stuff to do behind the scenes what with transferring everything over to a new computer and whatnot.

I also spent some time gradually upgrading my studio space, pack of acoustic foam by pack of acoustic foam. Summer is going to be interesting, considering how much insulation I'm adding in there! Will it be an oven? Or a cool oasis? We'll see, I guess!

With everything transferred to the new computer, my old laptop has also finally started its cozy retirement as my gaming machine. And to celebrate, I dipped back into the Sims for the first time in like two years. I even made a version of the channel mascot, and tried to truly capture the Vanilla Velvet experience in a Sim:

If you don't love me at my Erratic Trait, you don't deserve me at my Romantic/Goofball Trait.

Silly? Yes. Of course! When am I not?!

Anyway, here are some other things I've enjoyed since the beginning of 2024!

Articles!

The 150 Greatest Sci-Fi Movies of All Time: My journey to cinephilia started with these kinds of lists (picture a Young Velvet, age 13, feverishly writing in her diary about all the cult movies a PBS documentary mentioned that she HAD to see) so they have a soft spot in my black little heart. This is a solid one! I was pleasantly surprised to see campier favorites of mine like Barbarella, Deathrace 2000 and This Island Earth alongside more respected classics like Soylent Green and Forbidden Planet.

You know me, I love the cheese.

How the Titanic's gym forever changed fitness: How do I keep reading sports-related articles when I don't care much about sports? No idea! But this was fascinating: a look at the gym on the Titanic, a concept that was pretty new and novel in its day!

I've actually gotten super interested in exercise science recently (it's a long story, but I...kinda think maybe I want to be a personal trainer someday??) and this article merged that new super specific interest with history in a cool way that kept me occupied for quite awhile!

Podcasts!

Dear Hank and John: The Vlogbrothers--vertical video sensation/science communicator Hank Green, and YA novelist/Giant Squid of Anger John Green--being dorky nerds and giving dubious advice while I'm doing dishes and making thumbnails and such has made my life so much better. They're like a warm hug to me, and always will be. 💖

Weird Stuff and Websites!

Apple Rankings.com: A comedian and apple enthusiast ranks and reviews apples, often scathingly. That's it. I stumbled on this completely at random and spent too much time there. I love you, internet. You're so weird.

[Manga Talk]: I've been interested in vintage manga for a few years now (1950's-1980's, particularly!) and this is a great resource about shoujo! One of my favorite things about delving into pop culture is, once becoming familiar with a genre, poking through its earlier incarnations! I find tracing the origins of genre conventions so engrossing!

Games!

Yakuza/Like a Dragon/Ryū ga Gotoku 1-5: I have a confession to make: I've been slowly making my way through the Yakuza series for months. You may remember a friend gifted me a copy of one of the games back in like...2022?

Sadly, because my time for dedicated gaming has been so sporadic, it's taken foreeeever to get this far in the series. Usually when I have downtime, I don't have the mental energy to throw myself into a long narrative, so I fall back on games I can easily jump in and out of, like management sims and the like.

But I love Yakuza! The characters are wonderful and the game play is fun. It's definitely a mixed bag, far from flawless, but the stuff I adore I really, REALLY adore. Definitely check it out!

Startup Panic: One of the aforementioned games I can easily start and stop when my brain is too fried for anything more complicated or emotionally taxing, Startup Panic is a management sim in the Game Dev Tycoon mold. Start a company! Manage it! Get called out for being a workaholic by the narrative!

Fuck you, Clippy. Don't tell me how to live my life.

Aaand...that's about it for me, this month! How are you all doing? See/play/read anything good?

Obi-Wan’s Secret Account

Life was absolutely insane these last 2 months, but I finally started my dream of making a movie room! I have a huge projector now, one of those movie recliners, and I have finally gotten a LOT of physical media. The amount of dvds that I now own haunts me... but it was well worth it! Now I just need to get a popcorn maker... lol (also, first month being in the patreon, and it was hype! Super excited to be here and see all the "behind the scenes" lol)

I guess life is going good right now. Super busy but I got excepted into my PHD program so my work load is about to go up exponentially, but it’ll pay off in the end. On a little sad note, I accidentally knocked my Thank you Sugar coffee cut and broke the handle off. I’m going to try and glue it back together tomorrow and hopefully it holds. Thanks again for all the great content you give use can’t wait to see what comes next.

Hi Vel and co., hope it’s been good for you! To be honest: I’m just glad we got these back after we missed the last two months. For me, the last two months have been a bit of a blur since I had so much to do (Christmas, visiting my grandparents, finishing my second college degree, etc.) . But overall, things have been fine—getting better, actually. One of the big things is that I finished up the last of Brandon Sanderson’s Secret Projects—the Sunlit Man, which is basically his take on a Western for his Cosmere setting. The story follows a man named Nomad (who, from my understanding, is a character from the Stormlight Archive) as he arrives on Canticle, a planet in the Cosmere that has a deadly magical sun which vaporizes everything that its light touches. Due to this, the people of Canticle live in massive cities that are actually a bunch of futuristic airships put together like jigsaw puzzles. However, things have gotten worse for Canticle as a mad tyrant, the Cinder King, looks to put all of the planet under his heel, and it seems Nomad is the only one who can stop even—even if he desperately wants to get away, as a dangerous and cruel force known as the “Night Brigade” is hunting him. It was a very enjoyable book, and I’m happy to see my first foray into the Science Fantasy elements of the Cosmere. And I gotta be honest—the ending was appropriately bittersweet, and one can only hope future books in the Cosmere make it more sweet. It probably wasn’t my favorite of the projects (that would still fall to Tress of the Emerald Sea), but I liked it a lot. I also was able to get a special short story, Long Chills and Case Dough, which is basically a Neo-Noir in a Sci-Fi setting. It’s about a private investigator who is hired to help clear a woman’s name, with the problem being that the woman was clearly shown killing a multitude of people. It’s a little too simple for my taste, but I enjoyed it, and I liked Sanderson’s argument for making the story being that just as we look back at knights in a romantic fashion, maybe one day future fantasy and Sci-Fi authors will look back on detectives in the same fashion. I’ve also gotten back into Coraline a bit—one of my favorite movies as a kid—and it led me to a couple of continuation fics I enjoyed. The first, Right Behind You, takes place shortly after the movie and has the Other Mother/Beldam try to kidnap Wybie in an attempt to get revenge on Coraline. Along with this, we learn more about the Beldam, the Cat, and their history together, and get some cute ship teasing between Coraline and Wybie. I will admit the ending wasn’t my favorite (nothing bad happens, but I wish it had ended a bit differently), and I think the plot had some points that dragged the story down, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. The second is a Wattpad story called Coraline 2: Button Eyes. In this one, Coraline has been in therapy for a while after the events of the first movie, but she keeps having nightmares of the Beldam coming to get her. Eventually, the people around her start to distance herself from her, and Coraline—tired and without hope—gives into the Beldam when she comes for her again. However, the latest chapter does indicate there is some hope for her to escape yet! Sadly, putting aside the story isn’t the best written, it hasn’t been updated since 2023, so I doubt we are going to see a continuation. It has led me to brainstorm my own Coraline continuation fic, though, and I hope to get to it soon! Another person I’ve started to enjoy is Lydia the Bard, though I have to catch up on her work. For those who don’t know her: Lydia is a YouTube singer from England, and one of her most popular works is the Disney Princess Villain Songs, where she takes the Disney Princesses (or in the case of Anya from Anastasia, Disney-Adjacent Princess) and has them reimagined as villains, usually because of one thing that causes them to snap and turn to villainy. I must say: I do love this concept, and while I do think some of her backstories for the songs need work, I greatly enjoy both the songs and the overall ideas of what happen—with Anya’s song not only being my favorite, but actually inspiring me to make a few fanfics based off it *and* make an original character as well! My only complaint is that I want to see how the stories go after the Princesses become villains, but I’m guessing that either Lydia hasn’t thought that far ahead (at least, not yet) or she wants people to come up with their own conclusions as to what is next. Suffice to say, though, give her a shot—I think we all would like her! In other news, I’ve actually been writing quite a bit! One of my goals this year was to try and get at least one story out each month (with this compounding if I miss a month—so, if I didn’t finish anything by the end of the year, I’d have to complete twelve stories). While I wasn’t able to finish anything in January, I was able to two stories in the last couple of weeks—which is *huge* for me since it’s been a while since I was that productive! And I’m continuing to write more! It makes me feel like I’m starting to get back into the groove of writing and soon, I can look into self-publishing original work (if only as a side job for now) pretty soon. In any case, that’s all for me now. I hope you all have a good day and I’ll talk to you all later!
